I love fixing things, and I want to be a scientist when I grow up.
Last week, the shiny red reflector fell off my friend Jake’s bicycle. He wanted to take it to the bike shop.
“I can fix it for you!” I said.
He didn’t believe me. “Well, it had better work!”
I tied the reflector back on with a string. It dangled (晃动) a bit, but I thought it worked just fine.
Later, our teacher, Mr Wilson, saw my work.
“Is this the best solution (解决方案)?” he asked.
“Maybe not, but it is working!” I said.
“I have a lesson for you,” he added. “Let’s test your idea to see if it works.”
I got excited to test it. I made a table with two sections: GOOD and BAD. When school ended, Jake and I went outside. First, he rode down the sidewalk; the reflector stayed on, so I ticked the GOOD. Next, he went over a bump (小坡), and it still held. Another tick! Then, he rode under a tree and the branches (树枝) hit the reflector and it fell off.
Jake cried out, “My reflector!” I marked it in the BAD.
The next day Mr Wilson read my notes.
“When did the reflector stay on?” he asked.
“It stayed on during usual riding but fell off under the tree,” I replied.
“Great!” Mr Wilson said. “What have you found?”
“I don’t think the string worked well,” I said.
“I agree, but you did have to test it first to be sure. Then, what might work better?”
“Let’s try glue (胶水)!” I said.
Then, I glued the reflector back. The next day, I tested it again. Jake rode on the sidewalk, over the bump, and under the tree—this time, the reflector stayed on!
“Yay! It worked!” Jake shouted. I ticked the GOOD.
Mr Wilson smiled, “Great job, little scientist,” he said. “You tested your idea and found a better solution.”

Have you ever grown a plant like tomatoes and beans that you can eat at home? It is called homegrown produce, because you can grow it at your home.
You don’t need lots of space to grow produce. You can grow it in a pot or in a window box. It’s just as good and just as fresh (新鲜的).
You don’t have to wait for it to come on a boat or a plane for a long time. It means that you should not disregard homegrown produce at your home. You can just go to your gardens and pick a lot of fresh peppers or tomatoes anytime.
Think about what you can do with your homegrown produce. You can roast it or toast it. You can bake it or put it in a pie. Anyway, you can cook it in any way you like.
Homegrown produce is fresh! Eating fresh produce is very important. You and your family can eat the green produce that you grow in the garden. That is good for your health.
But how do people have more fresh produce to eat? Some people like a program (项目) called Plant a Row (行,排). Here is how this program works.
People in this program usually plant two or more rows of plants. They plant one row of beans for their family and they plant the other row to give to a food bank (食物赈济处). If people don’t have enough food to eat, they can go to the food bank and get some food from others for free. Nowadays, some schools join the program. Students can grow their own produce at school. They will eat the fresh food at school, take some home and give some food to the food bank.
If your class plants a garden, you will need some useful tools (工具). And your teacher may need to help you with the work. Take care of your garden and wait for the produce to grow. You will get more than you think.
Growing fresh produce is a big job. You must wait for it to grow. But don’t give up! People will thank you for helping them eat healthily.

A few years ago, research by the National Alliance for Youth Sports in the USA found that most young people (around 70%) gave up playing all organised (有组织的) sport by the age of thirteen. This is really surprising because everyone knows that sports are good for our body and mind.
According to the research, the main reason that teenagers no longer wanted to take part in any organised sport was that “it’s just not fun any more”. When I was a child, playing sports was all about having a good time with my friends. It didn’t matter if you were not the fastest and most skillful, you still joined in. It was about playing together, learning to win and lose, laughing and crying, but above all enjoying the moment. But now that we are older, sports teachers and coaches only seem to be interested in the few kids who want to take it seriously. The rest of us, who just want to play for fun, get forgotten.
As I see it, it isn’t just sport that is the problem; it’s the whole culture of success that we live in. Every day we are told to “be the best”, “give 110%” and “never give up”. But what if you just want to do something you aren’t very good at because it’s fun?
People also need to remember that life for a teenager is pretty busy. You don’t want to miss out on spending time with friends and developing other interests just because you have to go to sports training five times a week. And let’s not forget school. As we get older, we spend more and more time studying, both at home and at school.
What really matters is that sport is so important. Besides the physical advantages, lots of research shows sport can help young people deal with stress (压力). When around 30% of teenagers are experiencing stress, we need to do everything possible to get them to take up a sport.
What can we do to make such a big change happen? In my opinion, we need schools, sports organisations and governments to understand that, above all else, sport isn’t about being the best, training hard, and winning—it’s about having fun, making friends, and taking part.
31. The writer mentions his own experience of playing sports as a child to _________.
A. show his excellence in sports
B. share his love of playing sports
C. describe the true meaning of sport for children
D. tell the importance of sport for children’s development
32. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Teenagers should take better care of their minds and bodies.
B. Sports training time should not take up students’ study time.
C. The culture of success stops teenagers playing organised sport.
D. Teenagers need suggestions in managing sports and other things.
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To warn schools of the risk of trying to win in sports.
B. To ask for more chances to enjoy playing sports.
C. To advise teenagers to take sports seriously.
D. To discuss the advantages of playing sports.

细节理解题。根据“it isn’t just sport that is the problem; it’s the whole culture of success that we live in”可知,是成功文化阻碍了青少年参与有组织的体育运动。故选C。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。结合全文以及“we need schools, sports organisations and governments to understand… it’s about having fun, making friends, and taking part”可知,作者期望更多机会享受运动的乐趣,而不是仅限于竞争和培训目的,强调运动的乐趣和参与。故选B。

【答案】例文
The Secrets of Happiness
Happiness comes from small moments of beauty. Many things make me happy. For example, having dinner with my family makes me feel warm. Reading an interesting book or listening to my favorite songs also makes me feel good.
I think the key to a happy life is to start with a thankful heart. Every day, I try to notice the small things, like a sunny day or a friend’s smile. Helping others is another way to feel happy. When I help my classmates with their homework, I feel useful and happy.
My advice is simple: don’t forget to enjoy the little things in life. It’s important to spend time with people you love and do things you enjoy. Also, always be kind—kindness makes you and others feel good.
Remember, happiness is often hidden in everyday moments. Let’s enjoy them!

I love fixing things, and I want to be a scientist when I grow up.
Last week, the shiny red reflector fell off my friend Jake’s bicycle. He wanted to take it to the bike shop.
“I can fix it for you!” I said
He didn’t believe me.
The next day, Mr Wilson read my notes.
“When did the reflector stay on?” he asked.
“It stayed on during usual riding but fell off under the tree” I replied.
“Great!” Mr Wilson said. “What have you found?”
“I don’t think the string worked well,” I said.
“I agree, but you did have to test it first to be sure. Then, what might work better?”
“Let’s try glue (胶水)!” I said.
Then I glued the reflector back.

27. The word disregard in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. have interest in B. take care of C. pay no attention to D. look forward to
28. If we grow produce at home, ________.
A. we need to have a large farm B. we can get it in our garden anytime
C. we will spend more time in cooking it D. we should take part in a special program
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Growing fresh produce is easy and fun. B. People can buy homegrown produce from banks.
C. Homegrown produce makes people eat more food. D. Students can grow and eat fresh produce at school.
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To tell people to eat healthily. B. To introduce a way of helping people.
C. To show the benefits of homegrown produce. D. To ask more people to grow homegrown produce.
D
