She is one of the world’s most decorated swimmers. Jessica was the youngest athlete to win a Paralympics (残奥会) medal. But her path to becoming a champion has been anything but easy. Jessica was born in Irkutsk, Russia with a severe and rare disease — fibular hemimelia (腓侧半肢畸形). This means that part of her leg bones was missing or abnormal. Because of that, her young mother placed her in a Russian orphanage (孤儿院), fearing she could not care for Jessica. Fortunately, she was adopted by an American family when she was 13 months old. She required 25 different surgeries to help her leg condition. But unfortunately, both of her legs had to be removed when she was just 18 months old. Jessica learned to walk with artificial legs. As a child, she took to sports including gymnastics, cheer-leading, ice skating, biking and rock climbing. She began swimming at her grandparents’ house when she was 6. She started competitive swimming about 4 years later. She did really well in swimming. Shortly after she started competing, Jessica was selected as Maryland’s Female Swimmer of the Year with a Disability. Even though Jessica was annoyed with her physical limitations, she was encouraged to enter her first Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. She won three gold medals in swimming at 12! But she did not rest on her success. Jessica has gone on to win 23 medals for Team USA at the Paralympics! While she began her career out of anger and annoyance, she now has a positive force on a mission(任务)to inspire the next generation of Paralympians! Her attitude and growth have been keys to her success. Jessica always believed she could do anything. As she says, “The only disability in life is a negative attitude.” 24. What happened to Jessica when she was a baby? A. She was abandoned in the wild. B. She had her legs cut because of a disease. C. She had 25 operations on her leg. D. She was adopted by a Russian family. 25. When did Jessica begin to receive professional swimming training? A. At the age of 4. B. At the age of 6. C. At the age of 10. D. At the age of 12. 26. What can we infer about Jessica from the text? A. She was the youngest athlete in US history. B.She took part in several sports in Paralympics. C. She has won 23 gold medals in Paralympics. D.She has set a good example to Paralympians. 27. What does the author want to tell us? A. Difficult the first time, easy the second. B. Never hit a man when he is down. C.Nothing is impossible to a determined heart. D. A common danger causes common action. C These days, being a teenager isn’t easy. Teens’ schedules often include doing after-school activities, sports practice, and homework, combined with working part-time for extra spending money or to contribute to household expenses, leaving many teens feeling overworked and stressed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, close to a quarter of all U.S. high school students participate in the workforce(劳动力). Most states place limits on the amount of hours teens can work, with 20 hours a week the standard limit. Research has shown that working over the standard limit negatively (负面地) affects teens in a variety of ways. Researchers published a recent report finding that working more than 20 hours a week during the school year leads to academic problems. The more hours a student works, the more likely their grades are to be lower. A study published in the Sociology of Education suggests that working more than 20 hours each week leads to higher dropout rates (辍学率). Another study in the American Educational Research Journal reports that students who work between 1 and 15 hours per week are more likely to complete high school; however, students who work more than 15 hours each week are more likely to drop out. Working over the standard limit also causes sleepiness, which can be instrumental in the cause of injuries and deaths related to inattention while driving. It has been considered as a major cause in at least 100,000 police-reported traffic crashes each year, killing more than 1,500 Americans and injuring another 71,000, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Young drivers aged 25 or under are involved in more than one-half of fall-asleep crashes. Work helps teens gain valuable experience, teaches them much needed skills, and provides necessary spending money—but basic rules should be followed. The student workweek should be limited to 20 hours or less and should not go past 10 p.m. on a school night. Safe and healthy youth work experiences don’t just happen—teens, parents, and employers must work together to make them happen. 28. What percent of U.S. high school students work part-time according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics? A. About 15%. B. About 25%. C. About 35%. D. About 50%. 29. What is a possible result for a high student working two hours every day? A.Finishing high school. B. Becoming a dropout. C.Getting lower grades. D. Having sleep problems. 30.What does the underlined part “be instrumental in” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Result from. B. Refer to. C. Contribute to. D. Give away. 31. What is the author’s attitude to the standard 20-hour-a-week limit? A. Unfavorable. B. Worried. C.Uncaring. D. Supportive. D Jules Verne was born on 8 February 1828 in the French city of Nantes. From an early age, he had a fascination with exploration and discovery. When he was six, his teacher, Madame Sambin, told him stories about her husband, who disappeared while travelling the world on a ship 30 years before. She told her class that he was like Robinson Crusoe, a fictional (虚构的) castaway who lived on a desert island. Verne would later write stories about similar characters. In 1847, Verne was sent by his family to study law at a university in Paris, but he preferred to write novels, poems and plays. After graduating, he realized he wanted to write science adventure stories. This had never been done before, but Verne was sure that it would be a success. His first story, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published in September 1862. His career lasted for more than 40 years, during which time he wrote more than 60 gripping (扣人心弦) stories. To begin with, Verne wrote positive and optimistic books. Many of these were to be his most popular creations. Although some included fantastical elements, they were usually based on scientific facts, making them believable. These happy stories weren’t to last. As he got older, Verne became less confident in the idea that science and technology were always good for the planet. His books started to include more scientists who used technology for their own—sometimes evil—purposes. Verne died on 24 March 1905, but new books continued to be published until 1919. These stories were based on ideas Verne had written about while he was still alive, but featured new characters and plots created by his son, Michel. In the 20th century, his books were translated into more than 140 languages and several successful film versions came out. His creations have been recognized as an inspiration for many scientists and inventors. Many of the futuristic ideas from his most popular books have since come true. 32. What is the function of paragraph 1? A. To introduce the characters of his stories. B. To present the adventure of Sambin’s husband. C. To show the teacher’s impact on Verne’s writing. D. To describe Verne’s discovery. 33. What does the underlined word “This” refer to in paragraph 2? A. Studying law. B. Graduating from university. C. Writing science adventure stories. D. Writing novels, poems and plays. 34. What can be learned about Verne’s later works? A. They covered happy elements. B. They were unbelievable stories. C. They were partly written by Verne’s son. D. They revealed Verne’s doubt on science. 35. Which of the following words can best describe Verne? A. Popular and caring. B. Talented and productive. C. Optimistic and generous. D. One afternoon she saw her neighbor’s son, Martin. He sat alone on a park bench (长椅). Concerned, Doris approached him and asked where his mother Lucy was. “She’s still at work,” Martin answered. “She left you here so she could work? Have you been here the entire day?” Doris asked. Martin nodded, explaining his mom had just got a new job that required her to be out from 9 am. to 5 pm.. Doris checked her watch, seeing it was 2:30 pm. “Have you had lunch?” she asked. Martin replied he had eaten some bread. Doris felt bad for the poor boy. Not wanting to leave him alone, she sat with him and waited for Lucy to pick him up. Later Martin felt his feet were so cold. Doris found his socks were thin and worn out(破旧的). She took out a shawl (披肩) from her bag and put it around Martin’s legs. Finally, Lucy appeared. “Lucy, it’s dangerous for Martin to be out here alone the entire day, Doris said.
