With environmental challenges mounting, global cooperation is vital. Here are four groundbreaking projects combining Eastern and Western efforts:
Panda Guardians (China)
This Sichuan-based program not only protects giant pandas but also empowers local communities. By training over 500 farmers annually in sustainable practices like organic beekeeping and forest-friendly crop variation, it reduces habitat invasion (入侵). Since 2010, 120 km² of forests have been restored, and 20 villages transitioned to eco-tourism. Cooperating with the WWF, the project integrates traditional knowledge with modern conservation science.
Plastic-Free Oceans Association (USA & Southeast Asia)
Founded in California, this association partners with 30 coastal cities from San Francisco to Jakarta. Through beach cleanups, recycling workshops, and business partnerships (e.g., convincing Starbucks to replace plastic lids with recyclable materials), they’ve helped cities cut plastic waste by 45% in 2023.
Green School Program (UK & China)
Launched jointly by London and Shanghai educators, this initiative equips 200 schools with solar panels and AI energy monitors. Each school reduces annual carbon emissions by 15 tons (equal to planting 700 trees). Students check their school’s energy use and exchange energy-saving ideas via virtual classrooms. A 2023 survey showed participating schools reduced electricity bills by 30%, funds redirected to eco-clubs.
Desert Greening Corps (Africa-China Partnership)
In Sudan’s Sahara region, Chinese engineers and African agronomists (农学家) employ drip irrigation and drought-resistant crops to recover deserts. Since 2018, 50 km² of deserted land has become rich farmland, supporting 10,000+ families. The project trains locals in solar-powered water pumps, combining Chinese technology with African traditional farming wisdom. Annual grain output now goes beyond 12,000 tons.
21. Which program focuses on training farmers in sustainable agriculture?
A. Panda Guardians. B. Green School Program.
C. Desert Greening Corps. D. Plastic-Free Oceans Alliance.
22. If 10 schools reduce carbon emissions for 3 years, how many trees is this reduction equal to planting?
A. 14,000 B. 21,000 C. 28,000 D. 35,000
23. What do Panda Guardians and Desert Greening Corps have in common?
A. Both started after 2010. B. Both operate in China.
C. Both use advanced technology. D. Both address land conservation.

Alice, age 9:"Mom, do I have to brush my hair today?"
Me: Um, yes, it would be great if you could brush your hair every day!
In Alice's world, brushing her hair was an inconvenient nuisance(令人讨厌的事).I knew back then that this feeling would not last forever. One day I would pry (撬开) her hairbrush out of her hand and tear her away from the mirror. Five years later, my prediction has come true.
At age 14, there is no such thing for Alice as a spur-of-the-moment(一时兴起的) trip outside of the house. She is, indeed, obsessed with her physical appearance. Hair has to be brushed, makeup applied, and clothes changed many times before she can even think about leaving the house.
We have spoken at length about how looks don't matter and that being a good, kind and compassionate person in this world is way more important than any aesthetic(审美观).Each time we have this conversation, Alice reminds me that she knows technically looks aren't important. But when she looks good on the outside, she feels more confident on the inside. In turn, that makes her a kinder, more compassionate and more understanding person.
So while I will never be happy to see my daughter try on many shirts only to pick the first one she tried, or spend an hour getting ready for an event when the rest of the family were ready in 10 minutes, I know this is something she needs to do. Creating an identity for herself as an individual outside of her family unit is a natural and necessary part of the teenage process.
And just as she learned over the years that hair-brushing is probably a good idea, so will she hopefully learn that sometimes it's okay to go out in a less-than-perfect outfit or without makeup. Somewhere deep down, her freewheeling 9-year-old self still knows that.
24. What was the author's prediction about Alice?
A. She would avoid looking in the mirror.
B. She would refuse to stay at home all the time.
C. She would be very concerned about her appearance.
D. She would forget to brush her hair before going out.
25. Why does Alice spend time on her appearance?
A. To impress others. B. To make herself feel better.
C. To display her unique personality. D. To attract kind people as friends.
26. What is the author's attitude toward Alice's behavior?
A. Worried. B. Indifferent. C. Disappointed. D. Understanding.
27. What lesson does the author hope Alice will learn?
A. She cannot meet everyone's needs.
B. She should learn some makeup skills.
C. She needs to learn a lot as she grows up.
D. She doesn't always have to go out with a perfect image.
C
How’s this for a coincidence (巧合)? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.
They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man? It’s an apples and oranges--- or Superman vs. Santa---comparison. But if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor.
As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先) by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems certain to happen---not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.
Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time.
28.Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together?
A. They were born on the same day.
B. They lived in the same period of time.
C. They started revolutions changing the world.
D. They were both great men in the history.
29.What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges---- or Superman vs. Santa --comparison”?
A. It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding.
B. The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious.
C. It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa.
D. There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
30.Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________
A. narrow. B. aggressive. C. independent D. ground-breaking.
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.
B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
D. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.D
D
It’s been nearly two decades since the traditional clothing style Hanfu first started to reemerge in China. Since then it has gone from a small cultural movement celebrating an ancient fashion to a trend that is booming on social media, having been adopted by China’s Generation Z as a means of connecting with their past. Instead of following other cultures blindly, Generation Z now have different opinions about what trend is by promoting local culture while having an objective view of exotic cultural products.
The new tastes of Generation Z—young people born after 1995—are well represented on Bilibili. In the recent New Year’s Eve gala presented by Bilibili, it attracted more than 100 million views within 48 hours with a colourful set of programmes ranging from Peking Opera to classical Chinese cartoons. The same is also true of movie industry. Last year, for the first time, the top 10 most viewed films in China were all domestic films, while the ticket sales for imported films have dropped to only 16.28 percent.
”Generation Z grew up with the rapid development of China and under good economic conditions. With the development of the Chinese Internet industry, they have more access to diverse international information and culture, which bring them a much broader vision and makes them more open and confident in analyzing foreign culture. Apart from taking pride in China’s rapid development, this generation also pursues individuality and values devotion to the country,“ Professor Zhang Yiwu said.
He also noted that the popular rock and punk culture pursued by the 70s and 80s generation is more of a challenge against real life and local culture. Some people who were born in the 1970s and 1980s did not grow up in the Internet age—they experienced the transformation of China going from poor to rich first-hand. This kind of longing and admiration of the West came from a lack of confidence.
However, Generation Z now have the confidence to look at Western culture with equal status. This kind of cultural confidence will result in China being more active and creative in its development on the international stage in the future.
32. What does the underlined word“exotic” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Foreign. B. Fashionable. C. Traditional. D. Elegant.
33. Why is Bilibili mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To confirm the rise of new media.
B. To promote Chinese Internet industry.
C. To highlight the popularity of domestic art.
D. To show the popularity of New Year’s Eve gala.
34. What do we know about Generation Z from the passage?
A. They have a stronger cultural identity.
B. They are longing for cultural diversity.
C. They have made China develop rapidly.
D. They are more fond of foreign culture.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Confident China, Better Future
B. China’s Progress Results in Cultural Confidence
C. China’s New Generation Redefine Local Culture as Trendy
D. Hanfu Style, Connector of Ancient Fashion and Modern Trend

Jane, a high school senior in Willowbrook, was always alone at her home because her parents were often occupied with their work, even in the evening and she had to take on the household chores, including taking care of their garden. Nevertheless, though she dutifully tended to the garden, it never appeared attractive due to her poor knowledge of gardening.
One evening, Jane was left alone at home again. She sat by the window, doing her homework. When she looked outside, through the rain-spattered window, she noticed a figure lingering under the streetlamp across the street. The man, wearing a long black coat, seemed to be looking directly at her house. Jane’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes briefly met.
Actually this wasn’t the first time that Jane had seen the man in the neighborhood. He never spoke to anyone, and he always seemed to be alone. Jane had mentioned him to her parents, who said he was new to this town and was a gardener. However, Jane couldn’t shake the feeling of fear.
That evening, as the man lingered across the street, Jane dialed Mrs. Baker’s number with trembling fingers. Mrs. Baker, who lived just a few houses away, was a kind elderly woman who had always been like a grandmother to Jane. “Mrs. Baker, there’s a man outside, and he’s been standing there for a while. I’m scared,” Jane whispered into the phone. “I’ll be right over, dear,” Mrs. Baker tried to calm Jane down.
Moments later, Mrs. Baker arrived at. Together, they went to the window and peered (仔细看) out. The man was still there, but he was holding something in his hands. Jane’s fear grew. “What if he’s dangerous?” Jane murmured. Mrs. Baker patted Jane’s shoulder and said, “Let’s not jump to a conclusion so quickly.” Just then, the man began walking toward Jane’s house. Jane’s heart pounded as he approached the front door. But instead of knocking, he bent down and placed something on the porch (门廊). Then, he turned around and walked away.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m Li Hua, a Chinese exchange student in your school. I’m writing to suggest including the language of Chinese into our current curriculum as an optional course, given that many students here show ongoing strong interest in it.
Known as one of the most spoken languages in the world and with its growing popularity worldwide, Chinese has entered numerous classrooms in foreign countries. Besides, due to the rise of China’s international influence, speaking Chinese fluently has become a highly valued professional skill. Furthermore, learning Chinese helps open a unique window into one of the world’s richest and most ancient civilizations, which, meanwhile, will undoubtedly contribute to bridging the cultural gap between China and New Zealand.
I hope you can take my suggestion into serious consideration. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: Seeing the man melting into the darkness, Jane went to open the door and found a package with a note. Her hands were still shaking as she carefully unwrapped the package. There were colorful packets of vegetable seeds and a neatly - written note. “Dear Jane, I’m Mr. Carter. I moved here recently. I saw you working hard in the garden, and I thought these seeds could make it more lively. Gardening is my passion, and I hope it can bring you joy too.” Jane read the note over and over again, her eyes filled with tears. Mrs. Baker hugged her, “This is such a sweet surprise.”
Paragraph 2: The next day, Jane determined to find the man and thank him for his seeds. She carried the note with her and started asking neighbors about Mr. Carter. Finally, she found his small cottage on the edge of the neighborhood. When she knocked, Mr. Carter opened the door with a friendly look. “Your gift means a lot to me,” Jane said, her voice full of gratitude. Mr. Carter invited her in and showed her his own beautiful garden. From then on, Jane often visited him, learning about plants and sharing stories. Their friendship grew as lush as the plants in her garden.

Paragraph 1: Seeing the man melting into the darkness, Jane went to open the door and found a package with a note. With a deep breath, she opened the package to find a set of gardening tools and a card. “Hello, Jane. I’ve watched you trying your best with the garden. These tools might help. I’m Mr. Carter, and I’d be happy to offer some advice if you need. Gardening can be a great comfort.” Jane felt a warm current flowing through her heart. Mrs. Baker said, “You see, kindness is everywhere.”
Paragraph 2: The next day, Jane determined to find the man and thank him for his seeds. She walked through the neighborhood until she found Mr. Carter working in another garden. “Mr. Carter, thank you!” she exclaimed. He turned around and smiled, “I’m glad you like them. Would you like to learn some basic gardening skills?” Jane nodded eagerly. In the following days, they worked side by side. As the garden transformed, Jane also found a new sense of belonging and a dear friend in Mr. Carter.
