With the rapid development, the city of Chongqing is becoming more and more attractive to outsiders,
including foreigners. For 26-year-old Moldovan Gabriela Cojocaru, who has the Chinese nickname Li
Xiaoxiao, Chongqing is the beginning of a dream.
In September 2014, Xiaoxiao, who has studied ethnic dance and ballet since childhood, graduated
from the Moldovan National Dance Academy, and several classmates joined her on a trip to China.
However, she did not know any Chinese or even English. She made many friends from China, which
gradually solved her obstacles in language communication and made herself better adapted to life in
China.
“I think as a foreigner, first you have to learn Chinese,” she said. “Then you can go to better
understand the culture and the Chinese people.” But after learning what she thought was Chinese, she
discovered that the language she had spent two years learning is actually the Chongqing dialect. Such is
her delivery that even a Chongqing local would be hard to tell that she is a foreigner by just hearing her
voice. As Xiaoxiao thought Chongqing dialect was standard Chinese, she took considerable efforts to be
good at it. This “mistake” has turned out to be a lucky strike.
But she is more interested in doing something that helps the two countries understand each other. As

such, she introduced Chinese food or Chongqing food, and stories about China to her friends in Moldova.
She plans to introduce the history and specialties of Moldova, such as Moldo van wine, to the Chinese.
She hopes to let more people know that this country actually has a rich history of more than 5,000 years of
wine-making.
“I’d love to do it,” she said. “I will continue to strengthen the culture of the two countries and hope
that the two countries will become better and better.”
24. Why does Xiaoxiao make Chinese friends?
A. To study more about ethnic dance.
B. To appreciate more about new cultures.
C. To learn more local dialects.
D. To communicate with others more easily.
25. What does the underlined word “delivery” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Dialect. B. Ballet. C. Dream. D. Mistake.
26. Which of the following best describes Xiaoxiao according to the text?
A. Cautious and smart. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Friendly and optimistic. D. Hardworking and responsible.
27. Where can the text be found?
A. In a biography. B. In a history book.
C. In a culture magazine. D. In a novel.

Fog, often a symbol of confusion, uncertainty and danger, holds unique appeal for Laura Pashby. In
her book Chasing Fog, Pashby travels across British and Venice to explore the properties and
characteristics of fog as well as its related legends.
Fog is a type of weather condition that doesn’t last long. Pashby notes it makes the familiar world
seem odd and unsettling, which explains why numerous tales of magic are associated with fog. Each
chapter of the book describes her fog-hunting trip, as well as discussions of local history, geography, art,
literature and sense of place with her black-and-white photos.
Pashby’s personal stories run through the book, from her childhood memories of playing in
Dartmoor’s sudden fog to current life in fog-prone (容易起雾的) Cotswolds. On her journeys, she also
explores her “fog self”, a concept described by poet Alice Oswald, reflecting her absorption in fog. Fog
enables Pashby to see things differently and welcome the unknown. She sees it as a “visual representation
of dreams”. The book combines science with engaging contents on history, nature and personal
experiences. We learn new names of fog and much about the relationship between fog and art. Pashby
discusses how fog influenced the Impressionists like Monet, and how writers from Dickens to Wilde used
fog as characters. She believes creative thoughts are brought about by fog’s transformative power.
I wish for more about fog in urban settings. Edinburgh and London were overshadowed by the
northeast coast’s sea fog and Thames’ mists. Pashby describes the London smog in 1952, but doesn’t
mention the influences on human bodies of 21st-century air pollution worsened by cold winter fog, which,
besides affecting visibility, is linked to an increase in some diseases, especially among those with
underlying conditions.
In the final chapter, Pashby and her father visit Venice for its special fog, which feels out of place.
This journey could suit a second book on sea fogs in places like San Francisco and Namibia’s coast or the
great urban smog of India. Based on the completion of Chasing Fog, what an adventure such a book would
be!
28. What is the main theme of Chasing Fog?
A. Pashby’s deep fondness for fog. B. Pashby’s journey and search for fog.
C. Fog’s role in tales and legends. D. Fog’s features in various settings.
29. Why does fog appeal to Pashby?
A. It reveals local history and inspires art. B. It reminds her of childhood adventures.
C. It fuels creativity and offers new views. D. It provides inviting contents for writing.
30. What does the author hope to see in the book?
A. Impacts of winter fog on health. B. Details of fog in rural areas.
C. Associations between fog and air quality. D. Causes of the London smog.
31. What does the author think of the final chapter?
A. It is too hard to comprehend. B. It matches the theme badly.
C. It is nothing but an adventure story. D. It reflects reality of the cities.
D
It is a common view that “Necessity is the mother of invention”. That is, inventions supposedly arise
when a society has an unfulfilled need. Quite a few inventions do fit in this category. For example, in 1794
Eli Whitney invented cotton gins (轧棉机) to replace laborious hand cleaning of cotton grown in the U. S.
South.
Such familiar examples fool us into assuming that other major inventions were also responses to
perceived needs. In fact, most inventions were developed by people driven by curiosity or by a love of
tinkering (捣鼓). Once a device had been invented, the inventor then had to find an application for it. Only

after it had been in use for a considerable time did consumers come to feel that they “needed” it. Thus,
invention is often the mother of necessity, rather than vice versa.
A good example is the history of the motor vehicle which was not invented in response to any
demand. When Nikolaus Otto built his first gas engine in 1866, it was weak, heavy, and seven feet tall.
Thirty years later, he built the first truck. But it was a time when horse wagons and steam-powered
railroads dominated transportation. Public contentment with these two means remained high until World
War I when the armies concluded that they really did need trucks, which eventually made those vehicles a
substitute for horse-drawn wagons in industrialized countries.
Inventors often have to insist on their tinkering for a long time in the absence of public demand,
because early models perform too poorly to be useful. For instance, the first cameras, typewriters, and
television sets were as awful as Otto’s seven-foot-tall gas engine. That makes it difficult for an inventor to
foresee whether his or her awful prototype might eventually find a use and thus invest more time and
expense to develop it. Even inventions that meet the need for which they were initially designed may later
prove more valuable at meeting unforeseen needs. While James Watt designed his steam engine to pump
water from mines, it soon was supplying power to cotton mills, then (with much greater profit) driving
trains and boats.
32. Why is Eli Whitney mentioned by the writer in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To deny a statement.
C. To clarify a doubt. D. To illustrate a view.
33. What led to the wide use of motor vehicles according to the text?
A. The improvement of engine performance.
B. The end of World War I.
C. The need of the military during war time.
D. The decline of horse-drawn wagons.
34. What makes an inventor uncertain about the future of his invention?
A. Absence of public demand. B. Bad performance of early models.
C. A lack of time and expense. D. Awful looks of previous inventions.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Social Need: the Inner Drive for Invention
B. Great Invention: the Force of Society’s Progress
C. Beyond Necessity: the Curious Pursuit of Invention
D. General Application: the Final Purpose of Invention

It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make
decisions about where to attend college. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision.
36
When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching
excellence is not counted in rankings. 37
Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on
teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. 38 The absence of teaching excellence from
the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality
teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes.
Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education.
Administrators often do not view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrollment (注册) or funding.
39 Research shows that the more time instructors spend on teaching, the lower their salary. What
is the result? Many instructors continue to teach using traditional lectures, which lead to lower success
rates.
40 Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded
with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrollments. In the long term, universities,
organisations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the
mission.
What should students and their families do? They should give strong consideration to universities
where high-quality teaching is valued, even though the schools may be ranked lower.
A. Higher education has achieved its true potential.
B. Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion.
C. Quality teaching has been an important reputation-building factor.
D. However, the rankings ignore a critical factor: the quality of teaching.
E. Efforts to improve teaching at the university level have recently emerged.
F. They’re even more surprised at how teaching is undervalued by universities.
G. In fact, universities often shift emphasis from teaching to other ranking factors.

My father was the kind of person who could never pass by someone who needed help. He was a firm
believer in the mantra (箴言): What goes around comes around. He believed that someday he might need
help, and someone would return the favor. But I didn’t quite buy it.
One weekend, my father and I took a trip to Flaming Gorge Reservoir (水库). We loved to fish at
Flaming Gorge. We owned a cabin boat that was about fifteen feet in length. We put our boat in at Sheep
Creek Marina (游艇停泊港). Our goal was to go as far north as possible, spend the weekend in our boat,
and fish until we had our limit.
Heading toward the Wyoming side of the reservoir, we traveled some distance before we began to
fish. Frankly, the fishing wasn’t very good, but we loved being out on the boat together in such a beautiful
place.
Suddenly, we saw a man on the far shore waving at us. Immediately, my father fired up the motor and
went toward the other side of the reservoir, where the man was still waving at us. When we arrived, I was
amazed to see a beautiful big yacht (游艇) pulled onto the shore.
The man introduced himself as Mat and then thanked us warmly for coming to his assistance. His
battery was dead, and he wondered if we could help him. We did, and soon his big motor roared back to
life. Mat and his family were very grateful. We lost an hour of fishing. Being an impatient teenager, I was
a bit annoyed at the one-hour loss, but we were soon back out on the reservoir.
The next day the fishing didn’t improve. As a matter of fact, it was terrible, so we decided to call it
quits and go back to the marina. We were about two miles from the marina when we found ourselves
fighting a strong headwind that slowed our progress. The waves were kicking up, and suddenly our engine
decided to quit.

With the rapid development, the city of Chongqing is becoming more and more attractive to outsiders, including foreigners. For 26-year-old Moldovan Gabriela Cojocaru, who has the Chinese nickname Li Xiaoxiao, Chongqing is the beginning of a dream.
In September 2014, Xiaoxiao, who has studied ethnic dance and ballet since childhood, graduated from the Moldovan National Dance Academy, and several classmates joined her on a trip to China. However, she did not know any Chinese or even English. She made many friends from China, which gradually solved her obstacles in language communication and made herself better adapted to life in China.
“I think as a foreigner, first you have to learn Chinese,” she said. “Then you can go to better understand the culture and the Chinese people.” But after learning what she thought was Chinese, she discovered that the language she had spent two years learning is actually the Chongqing dialect. Such is her delivery that even a Chongqing local would be hard to tell that she is a foreigner by just hearing her voice. As Xiaoxiao thought Chongqing dialect was standard Chinese, she took considerable efforts to be good at it. This “mistake” has turned out to be a lucky strike.
But she is more interested in doing something that helps the two countries understand each other. As such, she introduced Chinese food or Chongqing food, and stories about China to her friends in Moldova. She plans to introduce the history and specialties of Moldova, such as Moldo van wine, to the Chinese. She hopes to let more people know that this country actually has a rich history of more than 5,000 years of wine-making.
“I’d love to do it,” she said. “I will continue to strengthen the culture of the two countries and hope that the two countries will become better and better.”
24. Why does Xiaoxiao make Chinese friends?
A. To study more about ethnic dance.
B. To appreciate more about new cultures.
C. To learn more local dialects.
D. To communicate with others more easily.
25. What does the underlined word “delivery” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Dialect. B. Ballet. C. Dream. D. Mistake.
26. Which of the following best describes Xiaoxiao according to the text?
A. Cautious and smart. B. Humorous and creative.
C. Friendly and optimistic. D. Hardworking and responsible.
27. Where can the text be found?
A. In a biography. B. In a history book.
C. In a culture magazine. D. In a novel.

Fog, often a symbol of confusion, uncertainty and danger, holds unique appeal for Laura Pashby. In her book Chasing Fog, Pashby travels across British and Venice to explore the properties and characteristics of fog as well as its related legends.
Fog is a type of weather condition that doesn’t last long. Pashby notes it makes the familiar world seem odd and unsettling, which explains why numerous tales of magic are associated with fog. Each chapter of the book describes her fog-hunting trip, as well as discussions of local history, geography, art, literature and sense of place with her black-and-white photos.
Pashby’s personal stories run through the book, from her childhood memories of playing in Dartmoor’s sudden fog to current life in fog-prone (容易起雾的) Cotswolds. On her journeys, she also explores her “fog self”, a concept described by poet Alice Oswald, reflecting her absorption in fog. Fog enables Pashby to see things differently and welcome the unknown. She sees it as a “visual representation of dreams”. The book combines science with engaging contents on history, nature and personal experiences. We learn new names of fog and much about the relationship between fog and art. Pashby discusses how fog influenced the Impressionists like Monet, and how writers from Dickens to Wilde used fog as characters. She believes creative thoughts are brought about by fog’s transformative power.
I wish for more about fog in urban settings. Edinburgh and London were overshadowed by the northeast coast’s sea fog and Thames’ mists. Pashby describes the London smog in 1952, but doesn’t mention the influences on human bodies of 21st-century air pollution worsened by cold winter fog, which, besides affecting visibility, is linked to an increase in some diseases, especially among those with underlying conditions.
In the final chapter, Pashby and her father visit Venice for its special fog, which feels out of place. This journey could suit a second book on sea fogs in places like San Francisco and Namibia’s coast or the great urban smog of India. Based on the completion of Chasing Fog, what an adventure such a book would be!
That is, inventions supposedly arise when a society has an unfulfilled need. Quite a few inventions do fit in this category. For example, in 1794 Eli Whitney invented cotton gins (轧棉机) to replace laborious hand cleaning of cotton grown in the U. S. South.
Such familiar examples fool us into assuming that other major inventions were also responses to perceived needs. In fact, most inventions were developed by people driven by curiosity or by a love of tinkering (捣鼓). Once a device had been invented, the inventor then had to find an application for it. Only after it had been in use for a considerable time did consumers come to feel that they “needed” it. Thus, invention is often the mother of necessity, rather than vice versa.
A good example is the history of the motor vehicle which was not invented in response to any demand. When Nikolaus Otto built his first gas engine in 1866, it was weak, heavy, and seven feet tall. Thirty years later, he built the first truck. But it was a time when horse wagons and steam-powered railroads dominated transportation. Public contentment with these two means remained high until World War I when the armies concluded that they really did need trucks, which eventually made those vehicles a substitute for horse-drawn wagons in industrialized countries.
Inventors often have to insist on their tinkering for a long time in the absence of public demand, because early models perform too poorly to be useful. For instance, the first cameras, typewriters, and television sets were as awful as Otto’s seven-foot-tall gas engine. That makes it difficult for an inventor to foresee whether his or her awful prototype might eventually find a use and thus invest more time and expense to develop it. Even inventions that meet the need for which they were initially designed may later prove more valuable at meeting unforeseen needs. While James Watt designed his steam engine to pump water from mines, it soon was supplying power to cotton mills, then (with much greater profit) driving trains and boats.
32. Why is Eli Whitney mentioned by the writer in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To deny a statement.
C. To clarify a doubt. D. To illustrate a view.
33. What led to the wide use of motor vehicles according to the text?
A. The improvement of engine performance.
B. The end of World War I.
C. The need of the military during war time.
D. The decline of horse-drawn wagons.
34. What makes an inventor uncertain about the future of his invention?
A. Absence of public demand. B. Bad performance of early models.
C. A lack of time and expense. D. Awful looks of previous inventions.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Social Need: the Inner Drive for Invention
B. Great Invention: the Force of Society’s Progress
C. Beyond Necessity: the Curious Pursuit of Invention
D. General Application: the Final Purpose of Invention

It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make decisions about where to attend college. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision.
36
When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings. 37
Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. 38 The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes.
Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education. Administrators often do not view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrollment (注册) or funding.
39 Research shows that the more time instructors spend on teaching, the lower their salary. What is the result? Many instructors continue to teach using traditional lectures, which lead to lower success rates.
40 Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrollments. In the long term, universities, organisations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the mission.
What should students and their families do? They should give strong consideration to universities where high-quality teaching is valued, even though the schools may be ranked lower.

He was a firm believer in the mantra (箴言): What goes around comes around. He believed that someday he might need help, and someone would return the favor. But I didn’t quite buy it.
One weekend, my father and I took a trip to Flaming Gorge Reservoir (水库). We loved to fish at Flaming Gorge. We owned a cabin boat that was about fifteen feet in length. We put our boat in at Sheep Creek Marina (游艇停泊港). Our goal was to go as far north as possible, spend the weekend in our boat, and fish until we had our limit.
Heading toward the Wyoming side of the reservoir, we traveled some distance before we began to fish. Frankly, the fishing wasn’t very good, but we loved being out on the boat together in such a beautiful place.
Suddenly, we saw a man on the far shore waving at us. Immediately, my father fired up the motor and went toward the other side of the reservoir, where the man was still waving at us. When we arrived, I was amazed to see a beautiful big yacht (游艇) pulled onto the shore.
The man introduced himself as Mat and then thanked us warmly for coming to his assistance. His battery was dead, and he wondered if we could help him. We did, and soon his big motor roared back to life. Mat and his family were very grateful. We lost an hour of fishing. Being an impatient teenager, I was a bit annoyed at the one-hour loss, but we were soon back out on the reservoir.
The next day the fishing didn’t improve. As a matter of fact, it was terrible, so we decided to call it quits and go back to the marina. We were about two miles from the marina when we found ourselves fighting a strong headwind that slowed our progress. The waves were kicking up, and suddenly our engine decided to quit.

I’m Li Hua, and my passion for painting began in childhood. At six, I was fascinated by vibrant colors and
shapes in picture books, inspiring me to pick up a brush. My parents enrolled me in art classes, where I explored
techniques and found joy in creating. Over time, painting became my way to express emotions and ideas.
Painting positively impacts my studies and life. It sharpens my focus, helping me tackle academic challenges

We tried to get it running, but it simply wouldn’t start. With each unsuccessful attempt, our frustration mounted.
The once-reliable engine now lay silent, leaving us adrift helplessly on the vast reservoir. Suddenly, out of nowhere,
Mat pulled up alongside us and asked if he could be of assistance. His friendly smile reassured us almost
immediately, easing our worry. I was amazed that of all the people on the reservoir, Mat would be the person to
show up to give us aid. Gratefully accepting his kind offer, we secured our boat to his. Chatting and laughing all the
way, we returned to the marina safe and sound and were ready for home.
On our way home, I saw an old lady waving at our car by the roadside. Obviously, she was in need of help.
Without thinking twice, I asked my father to pull over beside her, which my father did immediately. As we
approached the lady, her face lit up with a glimmer of hope. She explained that her car had broken down, leaving
her trapped on the way. We assured her that we would help. As the engine roared back to life, the old lady’s
gratitude overflowed. As we waved the grateful lady goodbye, my heart swelled with a newfound understanding of
my father’s mantra. What goes around really comes around. I finally had a chance to witness my father’s mantra in
action and follow in his footsteps.

We tried to get it running, but it simply wouldn’t start. With each unsuccessful attempt, our frustration mounted. The once-reliable engine now lay silent, leaving us adrift helplessly on the vast reservoir. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Mat pulled up alongside us and asked if he could be of assistance. His friendly smile reassured us almost immediately, easing our worry. I was amazed that of all the people on the reservoir, Mat would be the person to show up to give us aid. Gratefully accepting his kind offer, we secured our boat to his. Chatting and laughing all the way, we returned to the marina safe and sound and were ready for home.
On our way home, I saw an old lady waving at our car by the roadside. Obviously, she was in need of help. Without thinking twice, I asked my father to pull over beside her, which my father did immediately. As we approached the lady, her face lit up with a glimmer of hope. She explained that her car had broken down, leaving her trapped on the way. We assured her that we would help. As the engine roared back to life, the old lady’s gratitude overflowed. As we waved the grateful lady goodbye, my heart swelled with a newfound understanding of my father’s mantra. What goes around really comes around. I finally had a chance to witness my father’s mantra in action and follow in his footsteps.
