Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even more difficult. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything. Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice of anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it will say “expressing ideas and feelings or giving people information: a letter or a message”.
To keep a good relationship with your parents, you must keep communication strong. Let them know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends.
She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways.
Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.
31. What can we learn from the passage? ________
A. Writing a letter is the first step of communication.
B. Keeping silent is a good way for you to solve problems.
C. Asking your parents for help is the best way to communicate.
D. Communication helps us build a good relationship with our parents.
32. The underlined words “drift apart” in Paragraph 1 mean ________.
A. are different from others B. get close to each other
C. keep away from others D. become interested in new ideas
33. The writer uses Sophie’s example to show that ________.
A. playing outside late is dangerous
B. communication is the key to problem-solving
C. Sophie should be polite to her parents
D. Sophie’s parents should listen to her explanation

Making friends at school can be a little difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! There are some suggestions on helping you talk to people in your class and hang out with them outside of school. Before you know it, you’ll have a group of friends to have fun with every day!
Be friendly
Using proper body language will help. Stand up straight, make eye contact with people and smile! Try to avoid crossing your arms over your chest and looking closed off. The more open and friendly you look, the more people will want to get to know you.
Sit at a new table during lunch
Look for tables with an open seat. If you’re feeling a little nervous, pick a table that only has one or two people sitting down. Head over and ask if you can sit there then join in the conversation. Using proper body language will help. If you like the people you sit with, ask if you can join them again the next day.
Try out for a sports team
Pick a sport that you like (it could be soccer, basketball, softball, baseball, or anything in between), and try out for the team. Over time, you could become good friends with some of the other people on your team! If your school doesn’t have sports team, try looking for one at your local community center.
Join an after-school club
Meet friends who have the same hobby as you. Ask a teacher or your parents for a list of after-school activities and pick one or two of them that you’re the most excited about. Introduce yourself to everyone when you attend your first club meeting to meet new people and start a fun conversation.

New Year’s Eve is a time for people to buy presents for friends or relatives. It marks the start of the new year and it is the busiest season for the shops and stores. Stores crowd with holiday gift buyers. But some people celebrate the New Year in other ways. For example, they volunteer to serve meals for the homeless or visit old people in nursing homes. To them, this is the right time to help others.
As New Year is coming, students at Jefferson Middle School are busy wrapping(包裹)gifts.
“I have a new order,” a student calls out to her classmates from the front door. Other students jump into action.
“The Wrapping Service is part of the school’s RISE program. Students in the program learn life skills and vocational(职业的)skills,” their teacher Jenny told the local newspaper reporter.
Before New Year’s Eve, the students at Jefferson Middle School had a class meeting. Howard talked with the students about how they could give back to the community. At last, they decided to do a real fundraiser(筹款活动). They could do some work and raise money for Love Coffee because some disabled(残疾的)people are working in this coffee shop. Students could wrap gifts, handle orders at the front desk, answer phones and do all kinds of work there.
Nathan carefully cut the paper with scissors(剪刀). He is good at wrapping gifts. “I like to be organized at home,” Nathan said. “I wrapped presents a lot.”
Olive Werth, l2, said she liked working with people at the front desk. “I check people in,” Olive said. “I give them gift tags. Sometimes I send emails for pickup.”
“The students have been busy,” Howard said. “In the last two days, we’ve wrapped over 70 gifts and raised over 100 for Love Coffee.” The students do the project during the school day to learn what a job is like.
“There’s nothing better than learning to run a business, and I really like this project,” said Nathan.

B communication is the key to problem-solving
C. Sophie should be polite to her parents
D. Sophie’s parents should listen to her explanation

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Making friends at school can be a little difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! There are some suggestions on helping you talk to people in your class and hang out with them outside of school. Before you know it, you’ll have a group of friends to have fun with every day!
Be friendly
Using proper body language will help. Stand up straight, make eye contact with people and smile! Try to avoid crossing your arms over your chest and looking closed off. The more open and friendly you look, the more people will want to get to know you.
Sit at a new table during lunch
Look for tables with an open seat. If you’re feeling a little nervous pick a table that only has one or two people sitting down.
