Recently, a video on Bilibili got really popular. It’s from a blogger named “Not Kosander”. In the video, he talked about how he made the first English song about Unit 731—he wanted more people to know this dark history.
What is Unit 731? During World War II, it was a secret group of the Japanese army. They did very bad things to innocent people. But sadly, many foreigners don’t know much about it. Not Kosander wanted to change this. So he decided to find a musician to write a song about Unit 731.
He chose a musician from the UK. First, he told the musician some basic things about Unit 731 and asked him to learn more by himself. The musician asked for $800 (about 5,700 yuan). After one week, the song was ready.
When Not Kosander first listened to the song, he got goosebumps (you feel this when you’re very moved). The lyrics were deep, like “There’s nothing in the eyes during torture” and “They hurt me with needles, and my blood is on their hands”. These words made people feel the pain of the victims (people who got hurt). Later, the UK musician also said in the video that writing about Unit 731 was really hard. When he learned about it, he was shocked. He hoped the song could make more people remember history and stop such sad things from happening again.
This video is now popular on Bilibili. It helps more people, especially teenagers, learn about Unit 731 and why we should never forget history.

Why Top Students Don’t Have “Internet Addiction”?
In a quiet community, there lived a boy named Xiao Yu. He was a top student in his class, but what surprised everyone was — he loved playing games too!
Xiao Yu’s parents had a special way of dealing with his gaming. Every day after finishing homework, his mom would say, “You’ve worked hard! Let’s play your favorite game for 40 minutes. But remember, we need to stop on time.” His dad always kept his promise: when the time was up, he’d gently remind Xiao Yu with a smile, “Buddy, time’s over. Let’s read a book or play basketball now.”
Across the street there was another boy named Hao Hao. His parents were different. “Stop playing games! You’re just wasting time! Go study!” his mom would shout. If Hao Hao tried to argue, his dad would add, “We work hard to raise you. You must study all the time, or you’ll end up like us — no future!” So Hao Hao often hid in his room, playing games secretly. He felt guilty but couldn’t stop, because games were the only fun in his stressful life.
Amei, a community volunteer, noticed these two families. One day, she talked to Xiao Yu’s parents. “Your way is amazing! You set rules but also respect his hobbies. Kids need balance between study and fun,” she said. Then she visited Hao Hao’s home. “Forcing him to study non–stop will make him hate learning. Why not try to talk about his feelings and set a small game time? Like Xiao Yu’s family does,” Amei suggested.
Months later, Hao Hao’s parents started to change. They began to say, “Finish your homework first. Then you can play games for 30 minutes. Let’s play badminton together after that!” Hao Hao was shocked at first, but soon he felt happier. He even started to finish homework faster to earn game time, and his grades improved too!
Amei smiled when she saw the change. She knew: good parents don’t stop kids from having fun — they teach kids how to balance fun and responsibility.
9. How did Xiao Yu’s parents let him play games?
A. They let him play games all day.
B. They set a time limit and kept their promise.
C. They never let him play games.
D. They played games with him every day.
10. Why did Hao Hao play games secretly?
A. He loved games more than studying.
B. His parents didn’t let him play games at all.
C. He wanted to show he was brave.
D. Games were the only way to make friends.
11. What did Amei do after noticing the two families?
A. She asked Hao Hao to move to Xiao Yu’s home.

C. She gave advice to both families.

12. What’s the main idea of the passage?

Frutiger Aero: Colors of the Millennium
Do you remember the cool computer wallpapers with blue skies, green hills, and shiny bubbles? Or the fun icons on old phones that looked just like real objects? These all come from a super popular style called Frutiger Aero—it’s like a time-travel ticket back to the 2000s!
What’s Frutiger Aero?
Frutiger Aero has two “secrets” in its name. “Frutiger” is from a famous font made by a Swiss designer named Adrian Frutiger. “Aero” comes from Windows Aero—those sleek, glass-like computer designs. This style loves soft curves, bright colors, and making digital stuff look like real things (called skeuomorphic design). Think of app icons that look like actual buttons—so cute!
The Y2K Vibe
Before 2000, people worried about the “Y2K bug”. Computers might mix up the year 2000 with 1900 and break! This scary-yet-exciting feeling about tech led to Y2K aesthetics (1995-2004). Y2K used shiny metals and futuristic shapes. Then came Frutiger Aero—it mixed tech with nature, like putting skyscrapers next to flower fields.
Why We Love It (Even Now!)
For kids who grew up in the 2000s, Frutiger Aero is full of memories. It reminds us of computer class (hello, Windows XP’s blue sky!), old TV ads, and our first time using the internet. Back then, we thought tech would give us a perfect future—green, clean, and happy.
Later, flat design (simple 2D looks) took over with new systems like Windows 8. But we still miss Frutiger Aero—it’s like a hug from our childhood dreams!
13. Frutiger Aero gets its name from ______.
A. a computer game B. a font and a UI theme
C. a Swiss city D. a 2000s pop star
14. What does “skeuomorphic design” mean?

C. Drawing soft curves. D. Creating futuristic cities.
15. Why did Y2K aesthetics become popular?

B. Windows XP was very famous.
C. People felt scared but excited about tech.
D. Frutiger Aero was too old.
16. We miss Frutiger Aero because ______.
A. it has the best flat design B. it brings back 2000s memories
C. it solved the Y2K bug D. it only uses bright colors

Should we use AI in English Class?
Last week, we discussed if we should use AI in our English class. Different students have different opinions.
Some students support using AI. They think AI can make learning more interesting, like through interactive English-language games. It can also improve learning efficiency. For example, AI can quickly provide personalized exercise plans and instant feedback. Moreover, AI can offer diverse English learning resources, such as English-language stories and songs from all over the world.
However, others are against it. They believe AI will reduce face-to-face communication in English class. Students may also become overly dependent on AI, weakening their own thinking abilities.
In my view, AI is a useful tool. We can use it properly in English class. Let AI assist us, but not replace our own efforts and interactions.

Across the street, there was another boy named Hao Hao.
B His parents didn’t let him play games at all.
C. He wanted to show he was brave.
D. Games were the only way to make friends.
11. What did Amei do after noticing the two families?
A. She asked Hao Hao to move to Xiao Yu’s home.
B. She told Xiao Yu’s parents to stop him from gaming.
C. She gave advice to both families.
D. She reported Hao Hao’s parents to the police.

Later flat design (simple 2D looks) took over with new systems like Windows 8.
A. Making digital things look real. B. Using only bright colors.
C. Drawing soft curves. D. Creating futuristic cities.
15. Why did Y2K aesthetics become popular?
A. People loved simple 2D designs.
