2.statue [ˈstætʃuː] n. 雕像

语境用法:“while serving on a UN peacekeeping mission” 表 “在执行联合国维和任务期间”,此处 “while” 后省略主语和 be 动词(完整为 “while she was serving”),是八年级需掌握的省略结构。
5.join [dʒɔɪn] v.

9.feather [ˈfeðə(r)] n.
10.peace [piːs] n.
语境用法:“the wish for peace” 即 “和平的心愿”,是何志红及中国维和人员的核心使命,常见搭配 “world peace”(世界和平)、“make peace”(讲和)。

1. Zheng’s mother He Zhihong lost her life at the age of 35 when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, while serving on a UN peacekeeping mission.
主句:“Zheng’s mother He Zhihong lost her life at the age of 35”(核心句意:何志红 35 岁时牺牲),“He Zhihong” 是 “mother” 的同位语,补充母亲的名字,八年级需理解 “同位语表补充说明” 的用法;
“when” 引导时间状语从句:“when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti...”(当地震发生时),说明 “牺牲” 的时间背景;
“while serving...”
2.Before she set off, she wrote a letter to her son, “We are about to leave. What I care most about is you, my dear son. Keep in mind that your mother is a UN peacekeeping officer...”
“Before she set off” 是时间状语从句:“before” 表 “在…… 之前”,引导 “动身” 与 “写信” 的时间先后关系,八年级需掌握 “before/after” 引导的时间逻辑;
“What I care most about is you” 是主语从句(“what” 引导,表 “…… 的事物”),八年级需理解 “疑问词引导主语从句时语序为陈述语序”;
“Keep in mind that...” 是宾语从句(“that” 引导 “keep in mind” 的内容),“that” 此处可省略,帮助学生掌握 “动词 + that 从句” 的结构。
3. But as I heard her story from people around me, and looked through her photos over and over again, the blank space got filled up, clear and vivid.
“as I heard...and looked through...” 是时间状语从句:“as” 表 “随着”,连接 “听故事” 和 “看照片” 两个并列动作(“heard” 和 “looked through” 是并列谓语),体现郑晓云 “记忆被唤醒” 的过程;
“the blank space got filled up” 是被动语态:“got + 过去分词” 表被动(相当于 “was filled up”),八年级需掌握 “被动语态表‘某物被……’” 的用法;

A recent (近期) report tells us that many Chinese students are making a different choice after finishing college. Instead of working in big cities, they prefer to go to small towns or counties (县). This is quite a big change for them.
In the past, like in 2018, only 20% of new graduates chose to work in smaller places. But by 2024, this number went up to 35%. Why did they make this change? The report gives us some reasons.
Some graduates wanted to be closer to their families. They believed that people in small towns and counties were friendlier and always ready to help each other. Others had a dream to improve their hometown and make it a better place to live. What’s more, the government also encouraged (鼓励) graduates to work in these places by offering more job chances.
Usually, most graduates in China want to work in big cities. But after a few months, some of them start to feel the pressure (压力) from high competition for jobs or high living costs. These problems make them worried, and they start thinking about going back home.
The report also says that graduates feel happier and more relaxed after leaving big cities. In fact, nearly 60% of them stayed in their hometowns for at least five years. And their salaries (工资) also increased (1). In 2018, their average salary was 4,640 yuan, but by 2024, it went up to 5,877 yuan.
Zhang Yi was a 27-year-old young man who chose to go back home. After graduating from the UK in 2023, he got a good job offer in a hospital in Shanghai, but he decided to stay in his hometown instead. He said, “I think my hometown needs me more, and I want to help people in my hometown to live a better life.”
A change of 1._________ for graduates: big to small
The facts
*Mary students choose to work in small towns and counties after finishing college.
*The number fresh graduates working in small places went up by about 2._________ in six years.
The reasons
*Closer distance (距离).
*3._________ among (之间) people in small towns and counties.

*Higher pressure from big cities.
*Higher salaries year by year.
The 4._________

4.while [waɪl] conj. 时
语境用法:“while serving on a UN peacekeeping mission” 表 “在执行联合国维和任务期间”,此处 “while” 后省略主语和 be 动词(完整为 “while she was serving”),是八年级需掌握的省略结构。

1. Zheng’s mother He Zhihong lost her life at the age of 35 when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, while serving on a UN peacekeeping mission.
主句:“Zheng’s mother He Zhihong lost her life at the age of 35”(核心句意:何志红 35 岁时牺牲),“He Zhihong” 是 “mother” 的同位语,补充母亲的名字,八年级需理解 “同位语表补充说明” 的用法;
“when” 引导时间状语从句:“when a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti...”(当地震发生时),说明 “牺牲” 的时间背景;
“while serving...”
2.Before she set off, she wrote a letter to her son, “We are about to leave. What I care most about is you, my dear son. Keep in mind that your mother is a UN peacekeeping officer...”
“Before she set off” 是时间状语从句:“before” 表 “在…… 之前”,引导 “动身” 与 “写信” 的时间先后关系,八年级需掌握 “before/after” 引导的时间逻辑;
“What I care most about is you” 是主语从句(“what” 引导,表 “…… 的事物”),八年级需理解 “疑问词引导主语从句时语序为陈述语序”;
“as I heard...and looked through...” 是时间状语从句:“as” 表 “随着”,连接 “听故事” 和 “看照片” 两个并列动作(“heard” 和 “looked through” 是并列谓语),体现郑晓云 “记忆被唤醒” 的过程;
“the blank space got filled up” 是被动语态:“got + 过去分词” 表被动(相当于 “was filled up”),八年级需掌握 “被动语态表‘某物被……’” 的用法;

1.根据“Instead of working in big cities, they prefer to go to small towns or counties (县). This is quite a big change for them.”
2.根据“In the past, like in 2018, only 20% of new graduates chose to work in smaller places. But by 2024, this number went up to 35%.”
3.根据“ They believed that people in small towns and counties were friendlier and always ready to help each other.”
4.根据“Zhang Yi was a 27-year-old young man who chose to go back home.”
