1906年,意大利政府委派蒙台梭利博士担任罗马桑罗伦多区的一所公立学校校长。学校儿童的年龄在3岁到6岁之间,学生虽都来自贫困家庭,但都是正常儿童。儿童部分年龄段都集中在同一间教室,就像在家的感觉。于1907年1月6号,第一所儿童之家创办起来了。这间儿童之家也就是蒙台梭利教育中的儿童之家。他把之前针对智障儿童教育中所设计制作的教具、玩具都放在儿童之家里,再把自己教育低智能儿童的方法经适当修改后,也对这群正常儿童进行同样方式教育。蒙台梭利博士利用儿童之家建立了明确而完整的蒙台梭利教育体系和方法,简称为蒙台梭利方法。蒙台梭利方法是适合于世界儿童的崭新、完整而科学的儿童教育方法。蒙台思维方法有三大部分,日常生活教育、感官教育以及辅助智力发展教育。日常生活教育的有行走平衡,要学会最基本的生活本领的感官教育,有发展和训练儿童的感官能力。在辅助智力发展教育里,则有语言、数学、科学、文化教育,从而让儿童多元化,全面根据自己的节奏和兴趣去发展和成长。
