Step 1 Lead-in
1. Ask the following questions.
How do you get to school?
Are you always careful when you ride your bicycle? Why or why not?
2. Discussion.
T: Cycling is fun. What should you do to keep safe when you ride your bicycle?
Ask them to work in groups and share their opinions.
Possible answers:
Ride on the right side.
Ride on the bike lane.
Follow the traffic signs.
Wear a helmet.
Make sure the brakes work well.
Make sure the light is still working.
Make sure the tyres are neither too full nor too flat.
Step 2 Presentation
Teach the new words and phrases helmet, sudden, blood, knee, bleed, sharp, rock, stick, scary, goodness, stranger, careless, all of a sudden, go down, so…that…, lie down, take off, stick out of, and Thank goodness!

T: Jackie likes cycling very much. One day, an accident happened and her helmet saved her life. How could it happen? Let’s read the passage and finish the following tasks.

2. Ask them to work out the answers in groups.
3. Elicit answers by asking individual students to read the sentences out.

Step 6 Discussion
1. Let the students work in groups. They can choose one topic and discuss what they should do if they are in danger.

2. Go around the class and give hints by asking questions, etc.
3. Let several groups share their opinions.
4. Possible answers:
If you are robbed: (1) Keep clam. (2) If you cannot cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. (3) Try and remember what the robber looks like and tell the police.
If you are in a traffic accident: (1) If you are hurt by a car, take down the registration number. (2) If it is a bicycle, try to contact your parents before you let the rider go. This is in case you don't realize how seriously you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning: Don't stay in high places and keep away from trees.
When there is a fire: (1) Get away as fast as you can. (2) Put wet material on your body and try to find an exit. (3) Do not take the elevator!
If someone is drowning: (1) If you can’t swim, don't get into the water.
(2) Cry out for help.
Step 7 Writing
1. Let them work in groups. Discuss what they should do to keep safe when they ride a bicycle. Then write a short passage and present it to the class.
2. Get some groups to read their writings in front of the class.
3. One possible version:
Rules of Cycling Safety
It’s important for you to keep safe when you ride your bicycle.
Before you ride it, you should put on your helmet. It can protect your head.
Then check the brakes. No brakes, no cycling.
The third is to check the tyres. Make sure that they are neither too full nor too flat.
Step 8 Language points
1. All of a sudden, WHAM! 突然,嘭!
all of a sudden突然
相当于suddenly, 在句中作状语,常放在句首,说明某一动作发生时的情况。
All of a sudden she didn't look sleepy any more.
突然她看上去不再困倦了。
2. I went down hard on my right side. 我从右边重重地摔下去了。
go down摔下去,掉下去
The car stopped and Lucy went down hard. 车停下来,露西重重地摔下去了。
【拓展】 go down还可表示“(风、浪)平息下来;(洪水)下落;(价格)下跌”。
3. I felt so terrible that I lay down again. 我感觉如此糟糕以至于又躺下了。
so…that…如此……以至于…… that引导结果状语从句。so为副词,后面接形容词或副词。
This story is so interesting that I want to read it again.
这个故事如此有趣以至我想再读一次。
【拓展】 so…that…可与“too+形容词/副词+to do sth.”“形容词/副词+enough+to do sth.”进行同义转换。
The boy is so young that he can’t go to school.
= The boy is too young to go to school.
= The boy is not old enough to go to school. 这个男孩太小了,不能去上学。
4. Then I saw blood on my shoe. 然后我看见鞋上有血。
blood名词,意为“血”。其动词形式为bleed,意为“流血,失血”。
There was blood on his face. 他脸上有血。
Your nose is bleeding. 你的鼻子流血了。
5. As I lay there, I took off my helmet.躺在那里时,我摘下了头盔。
take off摘下;起飞
put on穿上,戴上
Now we can take off the caps. 现在我们可以摘掉帽子了。
The plan takes off at 4 o’clock. You do have some time.
飞机四点起飞。你还有些时间。
【注意】take off是“动词+副词”型短语,人称代词作宾语时,应放在take和off中间。
The coat is dirty. Take it off and I will wash it for you.
这件外套脏了。把它脱下来,我来给你洗。
6. There was a sharp rock sticking out of it. 一块锋利的石头从我的头盔穿出来。
stick动词,意为“插入;穿入”。其过去式为stuck,过去分词为stuck。
常用短语有stick out of“从……伸出来”,stick…into…“将……刺入”。
Don’t stick your fingers into the cage. 不要把指头伸进笼子里。
【拓展】stick还可表示“粘贴”。
He stuck a stamp on the envelope. 他把一张邮票贴到信封上。
7. She knew I was careless and did not always wear my helmet. 她知道我粗心,并不总是戴头盔。
careless形容词,意为“粗心的”。反义词为careful。
You made so many mistakes. You are too careless.
你犯了那么多错误。你太粗心了。
8. The tyres are neither too full nor too flat. 轮胎既不太鼓也不太扁。
neither…nor…既不……也不……
连接两个并列成分。连接两个主语时,谓语动词遵循“就近原则”,即与nor后的主语在人称和数上保持一致。
She seemed neither surprised nor worried. 她似乎既不惊讶也不担心。
Neither my grandparents nor mum is at home today.
今天我爷爷、奶奶、妈妈都不在家。
