Step 1 Warming up
1. Free talk.
Show the class a picture of doctors doing operations.
Say: What makes a good doctor? Why do some doctors go to work in poor areas?
2. Homework check.
Show the mind map to the class and get the students to retell the passage in Lesson 10.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Teach the new words graduate, remain, resistance, aggression, decision, aid, worst, condition, operate, government, and medical.
2. Then get some of the students to read the words in front of the class.
3. Use some words to show some information about Norman Bethune.
1. Norman Bethune graduated from the University of Toronto.
2. He invented tools that remain in use today.
3. He did his best to help the Chinese people in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression .
4. In 1938, he made a decision to go to northern China.
5. He showed people how to give first aid.
6. He worked hard in the worst possible conditions to help others.
7. He operated for long hours.
8. The government set up Bethune Medical School.
4. Let the students work in groups and find out the meaning of the sentences.

Step 8 Digging in
T: Did you know that Bethune was not only an excellent doctor, but also an inventor and a political activist? He invented medical instruments and proposed reforms of medical care and health services in Canada. Now, try to find more facts about great people.
Step 9 Pair work
1. Ask the students to work in pairs and discuss: Who do you think is rich-in-soul? Talk about him/her with your partner.
2. Give them a sample:

A: Why do you think so?
B: Oh, he/she is awesome! Because he/she…
Step 10 Writing
1. Let them write an article about great people. The title is “I want to be just like him/her ”.
2. Give them some tips:
1. Choose one person that is rich-in-soul.
2. Tell us what you can learn from him/her.
3. Tell us the reason why you want to be like him/her.
Step 11 Language points
1. In 1916, Norman Bethune graduated from the University of Toronto. 1916年,诺尔曼·白求恩从多伦多大学毕业。

remain是连系动词,后接形容词、名词或介词短语等作表语。remain通常不用于进行时。remain in use意为“仍在使用”。

4. People remember how hard he worked day after day in the worst possible conditions to help others. 人们记得他日复一日地在最糟糕的条件下努力工作来帮助他人。
(1) day after day 日复一日 强调动作的重复性
day by day 一天一天地 强调动作的逐渐性
The nurse looked after the patient day after day.

(2) worst 最坏的;最糟的 此处为形容词bad的最高级。
It’s the worst restaurant that I’ve been to. 这是我去过的最糟糕的餐馆。
【拓展】 worst 还可作副词badly的最高级,意为“最坏地;最糟地”,作状语。

5. To remember him, the government set up Bethune Medical School and Bethune International Peace Hospital in Shijiazhuang. 为了纪念他,政府在石家庄成立了白求恩医学院和白求恩国际和平医院。
(1) to remember him 为了纪念他 此处to remember him是动词不定式短语作目的状语。
