Step 1 Lead-in
1. Ask students some questions about Helen Keller.
Do you know her?
What do you know about her?
2. Talk about Helen Keller with students.
Step 2 Presentation
Teach the new words damage, wheelchair, telephone, hers, unable, control, cheer, focus, kick with the help of pictures.
damage v. 损害;损坏
Step 3 Talking
Ask students to read the comic of the lesson and then discuss the questions:
1. When you have a problem, what do you do first?
2. Can disabled people live a happy life? Why or why not?
Step 4 Listening
Ask students to listen to the recording of the passage and read after it for twice .
Pay attention to the pronunciation of the new words.
Step 5 Reading
1. Ask students to read the first paragraph and answer the following questions:
(1) What happened to Jane when she was ten years old?
(2) Could Jane move her arms or legs after that?
Answers:
(1) She became ill with a terrible disease, and the disease damaged her body.
(2) No, she couldn’t.
2. Ask students to read the second paragraph and answer the following questions:
(1) How old is Jane now?
(2) What are some things that Jane is unable to do?
Answers: (1) She is forty years old now.
(2) Brushing her teeth; putting on her shoes; running or jumping; making breakfast.
3. Ask students to read the third paragraph and answer the following questions:
(1) How does Jane move her wheelchair?
(2) How does Jane write letters?
(3) What is special about Jane’s telephone?
Answers: (1) She controls her wheelchair with her mouth.
(2) She talks to a special computer.
(3) She can answer it just by saying “hello”.
4. Ask students to read the fourth paragraph and answer the following questions:
(1) What does Jane do when her son runs and kicks the ball?
(2) Can Jane play the piano?
(3) Does Jane know about music?
Answers: (1) She cheers.
(2) No, she can’t.
(3) Yes, she knows a lot about music.
5. Ask students to read the last three paragraphs and answer the following questions:
(1) What does Jane think of her life?
(2) Who does Jane think is really disabled?
Answers: (1) She thinks she has a life full of good things.
(2) People who don’t know how lucky they are.
6. Conclusion: Ask students what they can learn from the passage.
Possible answer: If you focus on your problems in your life, you’ll have a life full of them. If you focus on the good things in your life, you’ll have a life full of them. So we should always think about all the good things in our lives.

1. She is unable to do many things. 很多事情她都不能做。
unable adj. 不能的,不会的 【反】able adj. 能的,会的
be unable to do sth. 不能做某事(=be not able to do sth.)
Daming hurt his leg, so he is unable to walk.
大明伤着了腿,因此不能走路了。
2. But she dares to try many things. 但是她敢于尝试很多事情。
dare v.敢,敢于 dare to do sth. 敢于做某事
Lucy is shy. She doesn’t dare to speak in front of the class.
露西很害羞,她不敢在同学们面前讲话。
Tom is brave. He dares to walk in the dark.
汤姆很勇敢,他敢在黑暗中走路。
【拓展】dare还可用作情态动词,后跟动词原形,通常用于否定句和疑问句中。
Dare you climb the ladder? 你敢爬梯子吗?
3. She controls her wheelchair with her mouth. 她用嘴控制轮椅。
control v.管理,控制,支配
He was unable to control the machine. 他不能控制这台机器。
【拓展】control还可用作名词,常构成以下短语:

4. From her wheelchair, Jane cheers as her son runs and kicks the ball.
当她的儿子跑着踢球时,简在轮椅上欢呼。
cheer v. 喝彩,加油,欢呼
cheer up 使……高兴起来 cheer on(在比赛中)为……加油
Don’t be sad. Here’s good news to cheer you up.

5. If you only focus on your problems, you’ll have a life full of them.
如果你只关注你的问题,那么你的生活也将充满问题。
(1)focus on集中于,致力于。on后跟名词、代词或动名词。

(2)(be)full of充满……(= be filled with)
