The Magic Paintbrush
Once upon a time, there lived a man called Ma Liang. Ma Liang was poor, but he was kind. He liked drawing very much, so he drew pictures all the time.
One day, Ma Liang had a dream. In his dream,
an old man gave him a present. “What is this?”asked Ma Liang. “It’s a magic paintbrush. Draw pictures with this to help other people,” the old man said. When he woke up, he found the magic paintbrush next to his bed. From that day on, Ma Liang helped everybody he saw. He went to his village. There was not enough water. He drew a river, and it became real. The people now had water. He went to the next village. The people there didn’t have enough food. “There is nothing to eat. What can we do?” the people said. “I will draw a field so that everyone will have food,” said Ma Liang. He drew a big field, and it became real. The people now had food. Everybody loved Ma Liang. He was a good man.
But in the village, there was a rich man who was very greedy. He wanted the brush so he could make more money. The rich man went to Ma Liang’s house. “Give me the brush!” he said. Then he took Ma Liang’s brush. The rich man tried to draw a pot of gold, but nothing happened. “It doesn’t work!” he shouted.
Ma Liang was scared, but he had an idea. “Let me try,” he said. “What do you want?” “I want a mountain of gold,”said the rich man. Ma Liang took the brush and drew a big sea. “ I SAID I WANT A MOUNTAIN OF GOLD!” shouted the man. Ma Liang drew a mountain of gold very far away in the sea. “I need a boat to get there!” shouted the man. So Ma Liang drew a little boat. The rich man jumped into the boat to get to the mountain. When he was halfway there, Ma Liang drew a big shark. The big shark jumped out of the water and ate the boat. The rich man was never seen again.

The Grasshopper and the Ant
Once upon a time, the grasshopper and the ant lived in a forest. The grasshopper was lazy and the ant was hard-working. All summer, the grasshopper sat in the sun and sang happily all the time. The ant made a house under the ground.
Autumn came and the ant worked harder. He collected food and took it into his house. “Why do you work so hard?” asked the grasshopper. “Winter is coming soon. It’ll be very cold and it’ll snow, too. It’ll be difficult to find any food,” said the ant. “Don’t be silly, my friend,” laughed the grasshopper. “There will be plenty of food in the forest in winter. Let’s sing and play.”
At last, winter came. The ant stayed in his warm house. He had a lot of food. The grasshopper was outside in the snow. He looked for food everywhere, but he found nothing. He felt cold, hungry and disappointed.
The ant heard the grasshopper and came out of his house. “What’s the matter, my friend?” asked the ant. “I’m cold and hungry,” answered the grasshopper sadly. “Come into my house,” said the ant. “It’s warm inside and I’ve got enough food for both of us.” The grasshopper thanked the ant and promised, “When spring comes, I’ll work hard like you.”

Passage 4
The Bear and the Travelers
One day, two men were traveling together. They suddenly came across a bear. One of the men climbed quickly into a tree, and tried to hide himself among its branches. The other man fell down and lay on the ground.
When the bear came up, and smelled him all over, the man held his breath, and pretended to be dead. The bear soon left him, because as many people say, a bear will not touch a dead body.
When the bear had gone, the traveler in the tree came down to join his friend. As a little joke, he asked, “What did the bear whisper in your ear?” His friend answered very seriously, “He told me,‘Never travel with a friend who runs away when danger comes'.”

The Oak and the Reed
On the side of a river grew a tall oak tree. It stood with its roots firmly in the ground, and its head high in the air, and said to itself, “How strong I am! Nothing can make me bow. I am taller and stronger than all the other trees.”
But one day there was a storm. The strong wind came and stuck the proud oak. The tree fell into the river. As the water carried it away, it passed by a thin reed that grew on the riverside. The little reed stood up tall, and looked at the poor broken tree.
“Hello, reed.” said the tree,“Why didn't you break when the wind came? You are so little and weak.”
“Oh, poor tree, ” said the reed, “I bent and moved until the wind had passed. It must go where it is sent, but it will not hurt those who are modest.”
