On April 24th, 2025, when China celebrated the 10th China Space Day, the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft (航天器) flew into space. Have you ever wondered how interesting life is for astronauts up there?
Astronauts live very differently in space. Because there is little gravity (重力), they cannot cook food like we do on Earth. They eat special food that is made before they go into space. There are no real beds in space, so astronauts sleep in sleeping bags that are fixed to the wall. There is no “up” or “down” in space, so they can sleep in any position (位置). To stay healthy, they use special bikes to exercise every day.
Spacewalks are also an important part of an astronaut’s job. When they go outside the space station, they wear space suits with about seven layers. These layers help protect them from very hot and very cold temperatures and from other dangers in space. During spacewalks, astronauts can fix broken parts and take care of the space station.
The Shenzhou-20 team will stay in space for about six months. One of their jobs is to study zebrafish (斑马鱼). These small fish are like humans in some ways, so they help scientists learn how low gravity changes living things. Astronauts also study microbes (微生物). These studies may help us make better medicine. All of these help China get ready to send people to the Moon before 2030.
These interesting jobs show how hard Chinese astronauts work. Their job is not easy, but it is very important. They also make young people like us want to dream big. Maybe one day, you could be an astronaut, flying in space and helping write the next part of human space history.

In February 1950, Hua Luogeng, a famous Chinese mathematician, wrote an open letter to all Chinese students studying in the US while he was returning to China. The letter moved many people and showed the strong patriotism (爱国精神) of many overseas Chinese scientists who were eager to return to their homeland.
The documentary (纪录片) Return tells the story of many scientists who decided to go back to China in the 1950s. “It not only focuses on their historical backgrounds but also shows their emotions and a deep sense of patriotism,” said Li Zheng, the documentary’s director.
Return shares many little-known stories of these scientists. In Hua’s case, many people don’t know how important his work was in the early development of computer science in China. In March 1950, Hua left his job at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and returned to China. The next year, he became the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and set up China’s first computer research team. Have you heard the saying “If you fall off the horse, get back on.”? It means that things may get difficult, and you may make many mistakes. But you should have the passion (激情) and energy to keep going. This is called perseverance (毅力). It can help you get a lot of things.
Perseverance means keeping doing something for a long time. It doesn’t matter if it is easy or difficult. For example, you practise a trick on your bike again and again. Or you finish a picture without giving up and start over. These show perseverance. Florence, a 13-year-old girl, says, “It means never giving up and trying hard to push yourself. I go running with my mum. Sometimes I feel good and sometimes I don’t. But I still do it because I want to be the fastest in my class. Whether in good situations or bad ones, we need perseverance.”
Studies show that when you get something you worked hard for and face difficulties on the way, perseverance can develop your confidence and make you feel braver to try new things. Angela Duckworth is an expert about people’s thoughts and feelings. She studies perseverance and she thinks that having perseverance is really important for us to succeed. She says, “No matter how talented you are at something or how well you do in school, you must have perseverance. When things are hard, perseverance is even more important. It can help you surmount the hard times and reach your goals.”
Duckworth believes perseverance is something anyone can learn. The best way to learn it is to have a growth mind. This means believing that your brain can grow. You can get anything if you put your mind to it. So don’t think, “I can’t do this”, try thinking, “I can’t do this... yet”. As the book The Big Life Journal says, “People with a growth idea know they can get better by working hard. They keep trying even when things are difficult.”
