Unit 1 Grammar 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Master the forms and uses of cardinal numbers (to talk about distance, house numbers, areas, years, number of people, etc.) and ordinal numbers (to talk about order of things and events, like grades, dates, positions).
Improve the ability to read and use both cardinal and ordinal numbers correctly in sentences about home, family, and daily life.
Be able to talk about home and family with a partner, using cardinal and ordinal numbers accurately.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key structures
Cardinal numbers:
Forms: 0 (zero), 1 (one), 2 (two),..., 10 (ten), 11 (eleven), 12 (twelve),..., 19 (nineteen), 20 (twenty), 30 (thirty),..., 100 (one hundred), 1,000 (one thousand), 1,000,000 (one million), etc.
Uses: talk about distance (15 miles), house numbers (28 Rose Street), areas (160 square metres), phone numbers (0207 000 1111), years, number of people, things, etc.
Reading big numbers: 4,056 (four thousand and fifty - six), 23,813 (twenty - three thousand eight hundred and thirteen), 567,110 (five hundred and sixty - seven thousand one hundred and ten), 6,425,000 (six million four hundred and twenty - five thousand).
Ordinal numbers:
Formation: most formed by adding - th to cardinal numbers (e.g., 6th = sixth, 7th = seventh); cardinal numbers ending in - y first change - y to - ie then add - th (e.g., 20th = twentieth); special forms: 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 21st (twenty - first), 22nd (twenty - second), 30th (thirtieth), 40th (fortieth), 90th (ninetieth), 100th (one hundredth).
Uses: talk about order of things and events (grades, dates, positions, etc.).
2. Key sentences
Cardinal numbers:
Neil's home is about 15 miles from London. It is on 28 Rose Street. It has an area of 160 square metres. His phone number is 0207 000 1111.
Neil loves taking pictures. He has about 2,000 pictures on his phone.
We live in Room 806, Building 15, City Garden.
Our flat is 98 square metres in area.
Our phone number is 010 - 1212 1212.
My sister Annie is nine years old, and she is in Grade 4.
Mum usually gets up at 6:45 in the morning.
My computer costs 4,550 yuan.
Ordinal numbers:
Li Mengtian lives on the twenty - second floor.
Her birthday is on the twentieth of February.
She is in the seventh grade.
She is always the first in her class to get to school.
Li Mengtian lives in a building with 22 floors. Her home is on the top floor, the twenty - second floor. Her family always eat yuanxiao on the Lantern Festival—the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar.
Neil is a Grade 7 student. He is in the seventh grade. He is usually the first to get up in his family because he likes jogging in the morning. His mum is the second one, right after Neil.
Femi's birthday is in March, the third month of the year. Today is his thirteenth birthday. He is 13 years old now.
3. Key and challenging points
Recognize, read, and use cardinal numbers correctly in various contexts (distance, house numbers, areas, phone numbers, etc.).
Form and use ordinal numbers correctly to indicate order (grades, dates, positions, etc.).
Use both cardinal and ordinal numbers accurately when talking about home, family, and daily life.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Cardinal numbers (A)
Introduce cardinal numbers
T: We use cardinal numbers almost every day. Look at the numbers below (show the cardinal numbers chart 0 - 19). Read them together.
Then show big numbers (4,056; 23,813; 567,110; 6,425,000) and explain how to read them (using “thousand”, “million”, “and” correctly).
Study the text about Neil's home
T: Read the text below about Neil's home and pay attention to the use of cardinal numbers.
Ask Ss to read the text, identify where cardinal numbers are used (distance: 15 miles; house number: 28 Rose Street; area: 160 square metres; phone number: 0207 000 1111; number of pictures: 2,000).
Work on Activity A1
T: Simon is writing about his home and family. Read the sentences below and pay attention to the numbers in his writing.
Ask Ss to read the sentences, focusing on the use of cardinal numbers (room number, building number, area, phone number, age, grade, time, price).
Activity A2: Talk about home and family
T: Talk with your partner about your home and family, using cardinal numbers.
Divide Ss into pairs. Ask them to take turns talking about their home (e.g., “I live in Room..., Building..., My flat is... square metres. My phone number is..., My sister is... years old, in Grade...”, etc.). Walk around to help with number usage.
Step 2 Ordinal numbers (B)
Introduce ordinal numbers
T: Now let's learn about ordinal numbers. We use them to talk about the order of things and events. Look at the sentences about Li Mengtian.
Read the sentences: “Li Mengtian lives on the twenty - second floor. Her birthday is on the twentieth of February. She is in the seventh grade. She is always the first in her class to get to school.” Explain the formation and use of ordinal numbers ( - th, special forms like first, second, third; use for floors, dates, grades, positions).
Work on Activity B1
T: Simon is doing a test on ordinal numbers. Look at the numbers below and write the numbers out in words.
Ask Ss to write ordinal numbers in words (6th = sixth, 7th = seventh, 8th = eighth, 9th = ninth, 10th = tenth, 12th = twelfth, 14th = fourteenth, 19th = nineteenth, 20th = twentieth, 21st = twenty - first, 22nd = twenty - second, 30th = thirtieth, 40th = fortieth, 90th = ninetieth, 100th = one hundredth). Then check answers.
Work on Activity B2
T: Simon wants to tell his friends about the three bloggers. Complete his sentences with the correct ordinal numbers.
Ask Ss to fill in the blanks with correct ordinal numbers (twenty - second, fifteenth; seventh, first; third, thirteenth). Then check answers and explain.
Activity B3: Write about family life
T: Write a short text about your family life, using both cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers.
Ask Ss to write a short text (e.g., “I live on the... floor. There are... people in my family. My birthday is on the... of.... My sister is in Grade..., she is... years old.”). Then invite some Ss to share their texts.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' ability to read and use cardinal numbers via Activity A1 and A2.
Evaluate Ss' ability to form and use ordinal numbers via Activity B1 and B2.
Assess Ss' writing and expression skills via Activity B3, checking use of both number types.
This lesson helps Ss master cardinal and ordinal numbers, improving accuracy in describing home and family.
V. Design Purpose
Introduction and text study help Ss understand cardinal number uses. Pair talk practices communication.
Sentence examples and activity practice help Ss master ordinal number formation and use. Writing integrates both number types.
VI. Blackboard Design
Grammar “Cardinal and Ordinal numbers”
Cardinal numbers:
Uses: distance, house numbers, areas, phone numbers, age, grade, time, price.
Reading big numbers: 4,056 = four thousand and fifty - six.
Ordinal numbers:
Formation: - th (6th = sixth), - y→ - ie + - th (20th = twentieth), special (1st = first, 2nd = second, 3rd = third).
Uses: order (floors, dates, grades, positions).
VII. Homework
Review cardinal and ordinal numbers.
Write down 5 sentences about your school using both cardinal and ordinal numbers.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
Ss understood cardinal numbers well. Ordinal number formation (especially for numbers like 21st, 22nd) needed more practice. In future, more drills on ordinal number formation will be added.
