Lastly, I’m going to keep on writing stories because I want to become a writer in the future. I think a great writer should be good at writing stories.

Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don’t have enough time to relax or to stay with their family.
Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1, 646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2, 159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works much longer a year than a French worker.
Why do people work so many hours? Some people work overtime. It means they work for more than 8 hours every day. That’s because they want to make more money. However, many companies (公司) don’t pay overtime. Their workers don’t get more pay for more work. Some people think it’s their duty to work more hours. Some people are afraid of losing their jobs if they don’t work more hours.
Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the U.S., two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of the workers used up all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy.” If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.
1.Why do many people say that they don’t have enough time to relax?
2.How many hours does a Japanese worker work more than a French worker in a year?
3.Why do people work so many hours? (答出二点即可)
4.Which country has the least time of paid vacation according to the last paragraph?
5.Do your parents always work overtime? What do you want to say to them?
There are many different kinds of jobs around the world. Many of the students have different ideas about their dream jobs in the future.
My name is Yu Sheng. I’m a reporter from the magazine—People’s Life in Town. Last Monday afternoon, I did a survey of the students in Grade 9 in Beijing Junior High School. There were 50 students in the class. And I found some popular jobs that they like. Here is the result.
The engineer is the most popular job. 20% of them want to work as engineers in the future. Nine students would like to be doctors because they want to help people be healthy. Eight of them want to be teachers when they grow up. Five of them are over 180 cm, so they want to be basketball players. Three of them want to be singers and actors. Four of them think they like to be computer programmers and three of them like to be cooks. The others don’t mind what to be.
No matter (无论) what you want to be in the future, study hard from now on.

3.How many students were there in the class?

Last year wasn’t the best year for Leo. His birthday was on 1st January. His parents prepared a big party for him on New Year’s Eve. He enjoyed delicious food and shared interesting things happily with his family and friends. The party left Leo many good memories except (除了) that he had made many resolutions to improve himself, but he didn’t keep them!
He told himself that he would try his best to study at school and get good grades, but he never studied for an exam because he thought he knew everything. However, his grades were so low that he had to repeat all his subjects in the end. Another resolution was to walk his dog every day after school, but he didn’t do it! He usually asked his sister to take the dog for a walk in the park.
Luckily, Leo decided to change this year, and he is really taking action. Now he’s 15 and he knows he needs to be more mature (成熟的). Firstly, he’s going to do his homework and review (复习) on time. He also wants to be a better football player. He plans to save some money to buy a pair of new football shoes and practise football in his free time. He has already saved some of his pocket money, and he has promised himself that he’ll save $200 this year. He’s sure that his parents will be really proud of him if he is successful in sticking to (坚持) his resolutions.
1.When is Leo’s birthday?
2.What did Leo do at his birthday party?
3.Who helped Leo to take the dog for a walk?
4.How is Leo going to improve his study this year?
5.Do you think Leo will stick to his resolutions this year? Why or why not?
A resolution is a strong decision to do something. Many people make resolutions at the beginning of the New Year. A middle school in Taiyuan surveyed (调查) 100 students about their New Year’s resolutions. Getting better grades, exercising more often, eating more healthily and reading more books are the top four.
The survey also shows that though students make resolutions every year, only less than 8% of them actually succeed. Here are several ways to make it easier for you to keep your resolution.
Set your resolution small.
Setting small goals is much better than trying to make big ones. 35% of New Year’s resolutions fail because they make big goals. For example, if you want to get healthier, it will be easier to start with a bit of daily exercise.
__▲__
A plan can make it easier for you to make your resolution come true. For example, if you want to take up a sport as a hobby, first decide which sport and how often you’ll play. Then, make a detailed plan and stick to it.
Track (跟踪) your progress.
Some people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions because they don’t track their progress. Write your resolution in a notebook. If your plan is to read, note down how many pages you plan to read weekly and mark the page numbers. This way, you can track your progress closely. This will help you to keep trying hard. Besides, this can make you more confident (自信的). Every time you achieve something, you will probably get a feeling of achievement and that will encourage you to move on.
1.How many students make resolutions about exercising?
2.Why cannot 35% of New Year’s resolutions come true?
3.What can be put in __▲__?
4.What are the benefits (好处) of tracking your progress according to the passage?
5.What’s your New Year’s resolution? How are you going to keep it?

【答案】1.20./Twenty. 2.Because they make big goals. 3.Make a plan. 4.It can make you more confident. 5.My New Year’s resolution is to improve my English. I will keep it by listening English songs and reading English books every day.
