Let’s look at two old but popular inventions we use in our daily life.
Band - Aids (创可贴)
The first Band - Aid was made by an American named Earle Dickson in 1921. The idea came to him by chance. Dickson’s wife Josephine often cut her fingers in the kitchen. At that time gauze (纱布) and adhesive tape (胶带) didn’t come together. People had to cut them to the right size. Dickson found they were always too big and soon fell off. So he put a piece of gauze on the centre of a piece of tape. This is how he made the first Band - Aid.
Later, Dickson’s new invention became very popular all around the world.
Bubble gum (泡泡糖)
Bubble gum was invented by accident. In 1928. American gum company worker Walter E. Diemer played around with new chewing gum recipes. Chewing gum had already been invented more than half a century before then. But Diemer found that the gum he made was easy to blow. He blew a bubble and then saw the possibilities. Do you think there is a ghost (鬼) in the world? More than 20 years ago, a student jumped from the top of the clock tower in the University of Birmingham. He did this only because he failed his final exam.
After his death, a superstition (迷信) began: Anyone who walks under the clock tower will have bad luck in his exam. Years later, students there still remember the story of the tower. (Although Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain, the university is green and quiet.) The grass around the tower has been worn away by the feet of students who refuse to pass underneath the tower.
The university had to pave (铺) extra paths, so students could walk to their classrooms without passing under the most terrible area. But, one day just before an important exam, a top student in the university walked under the clock tower because he was lost in thought. However, he got high marks in the exam the next day. Quickly students all knew about it. Then they realized that the most important thing is working hard.

Social customs and ways of behaving change all the time. Things that were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered to be impolite behavior for a man to smoke on the street. No man who thought of himself as being a gentleman would make_a_fool_of_himself by smoking when a lady was in the room.
Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or that doesn’t matter? What about table manners?
The Americans and British people not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England, people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seats to women, and so will most Americans. Promptness (准时) is important both in England and in America. That is, the dinner guest either arrives close to the time that has been made or calls up to explain his delay (耽误).
The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable—especially if they are your guests. There is an old story about a man who gave a very formal dinner party. When the food was served, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The other guests were amused or greatly surprised, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.
36. The underlined phrase “make a fool of himself” in the first paragraph means ______.
A. make himself strong B. make himself rich
C. make himself comfortable D. make himself look like a fool

A. the correct way to use a knife at table
B. that it is good manners not to make your guest feel foolish or uncomfortable
C. that social customs and ways of behaving change too fast
D. that different countries have different customs
40. What’s the best title of the passage?

(Although Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain, the university is green and quiet.) Social customs and ways of behaving change all the time.
37. According to the passage, the American people and the British people ______.

A. nearly or a minute or two later than B. at a quarter past
C. at half past D. much later than
39. The last example in the passage shows ______.
A. the correct way to use a knife at table
B. that it is good manners not to make your guest feel foolish or uncomfortable
C. that social customs and ways of behaving change too fast
D. that different countries have different customs
40. What’s the best title of the passage?

Dear Linda,
How are you doing? I miss you very much. I know that you will come to China for vacation. Now let me tell you some Chinese customs and table manners.
When you want to visit friends, you should call them first to make an appointment. And you must arrive on time. When meeting friends, smile and shake hands.
At dinner, don't talk loudly. Also, never point at others with chopsticks. Another thing is that we usually use chopsticks to eat. It's not polite to stick chopsticks into the rice, as it's like the way for funerals in China.
Following these customs will help you have a great time in China. I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Yours,
Li Hua
