As usual, Amber was hurrying to catch the yellow school bus. Luckily the traffic lights turned green as she was to cross the road, so she made it. When the bus passed a golden arch (拱形门), it reminded her of a hamburger. She hadn’t had breakfast that morning because the fruit salad on the blue dish didn’t look delicious at all. However, Amber remembered that she was still on a diet. So now she was really in a black mood.
You may have noticed that several colours were used in the above story so as to help describe Amber’s morning. In fact, colours influence your life more than you can ever imagine. Take language for example: You may describe a sick person as being “a bit green”. To describe a depressed (沮丧的) person, you say that the person is “feeling blue”. In short, colours do add interest to daily conversations.
Besides, colours can be used in many parts of your daily life. Have you ever thought about why many school buses and taxis are painted yellow, and stop signs red? Since yellow is the most eye-catching colour, it can catch people’s attention, especially in heavy traffic. As for red, it is the colour which usually shows warning. As a result, some traffic signs use this colour. For the same reason, hot- water taps are usually marked red.
The colours of a dining environment possibly decide how much you eat. Most fast-food restaurants are often decorated in bright colours such as red, yellow, orange, and white for the purpose of increasing people’s appetites (胃口). This is because bright colours are natural colours found in many foods, and, therefore, able to raise people’s spirits. Blue, in comparison (对比) with bright colours, is said to lower people’s appetites because few foods are blue in nature. For those who are on a diet, blue dishes and bowls might help!
“Morning, Amber! What happened? You look a bit green,” said Violet, Amber’s best friend.
“Nothing…just feeling…blue,” said Amber.
“Hey! Come to my place tonight. Do you know what I just bought? A phone! It’s red-hot.”
Amber was tickled pink to have the chance to play with the phone and said, “Sounds great!”
29.According to the passage, if you are on a diet, ________ might help.
A.putting your food in a blue dish or bowl B.turning on a yellow light during the meal
C.painting the walls of the dining room white D.covering the dining table with an orange cloth
30.Most school buses are painted yellow because ________.
A.it tells other drivers to prepare to stop B.it helps bus drivers stay in a good mood
C.it can easily catch other people’s attention D.it is the colour that most school children like
31.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Colours influence people’s daily lives.
B.Most fast-food restaurants are painted grey.
C.Different colours are used for different purposes.
D.Colours make daily conversations more interesting.

What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a very common problem among young teenagers: Most of them have little idea about their career plans as there is too little help from school or family.
The students from a Tianjin middle school started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi (点职成诗)” to offer teenagers helpful advice on career.
According to students’ needs, the team interviewed 32 excellent workers with different jobs and put their interviews on the Internet. These workers shared true stories behind each job. They also invited the workers to give speeches in school. In this way, students could have a chance to talk to them face to face.
Team member Lu Jinyan said his most impressive interview was with a photographer (摄影师). “I thought being a photographer was cool in the past. But now I realize that they need to deal with lots of problems, like a sudden change of weather. They also need to communicate with different people. This is not easy.”
But the project doesn’t mean to let students down by telling them the truth. “We want to show the workers’ love and spirit of never giving up,” said a group member. “The project's name means to turn a career into a poem. Have you ever paid attention to your school guards? Would you say “Good morning” to the cleaners? For Ding Jiacheng, it’s a problem that many students take no notice of the importance of jobs done by the non-teaching staff. ?
The boy from Hangzhou, together with several other students, started the project “The Invisible (隐形的) Are Significant”. They hoped more students would respect the “invisible” staff in the school. The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition held by Harvard and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to study social matters.
Ding and his team members sent questionnaires to 158 students. In one question, 56% of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers and only 17% strongly believed that every student should do so.
The team also did research on the interaction (互动) between students and workers. While most students followed the rules of their teachers, one third of the students went against the rules of the dormitory attendants (宿管).“It shows that students treat non-teaching staff differently from teaching staff,” The main reason, according to Ding, is that students know little about the work done by non-teaching staff and have few chances to communicate with them. So Ding’s team shot videos to show the staff working in the school. They also held a basketball match between students and non-teaching staff to increase their connection.
“Explore and understand society in practice, and influence the people around us. That’s where the meaning of the project lies.” Ding said.

What color is a tennis ball? Ask your classmates, and they might give you some 46 answers.
An American magazine, The Atlantic, asked 30, 000 people this question. 52% of the people said tennis balls are green, 42% said yellow, and 6% said 47 else. According to the International Tennis Federation, tennis balls 48 yellow. So, why do most people say that they’re green?
When we see an object in natural light for the 49 time, our brains remember its true color. Even if the object is 50 in different kinds of light later, our brains can still tell its true color. 51 call this color constancy (恒常性). For example, we know that China’s flag is red. When we see it during sunset or under purple light, we still know that it is red, even if it looks like a different color.
However, the color of a tennis ball is not as pure (纯的) as the flag. It appears to be a mixture of yellow, a “warm” color, and green, a “cool” color.
The magazine says that when 52 brains try to work out what color the ball is, some people ignore (忽略) cool colors like green, blue and purple. So they see the ball as yellow. 53 ignore warm colors, such as red, yellow and orange. They see the ball as green.
It is not just tennis balls that make such confusion. In 2018, a girl 54 a picture of a dress online. Some people said the dress was black and blue 55 other people said it was gold and white. They had different opinions based on whether they ignored cool or warm colors.

Most teens need more than 9 hours of sleep each night. But about 1 in 4 teens has trouble in sleeping. Lack of sleep can affect everything from our feelings to how well we focus on tasks like studying. It can also influence sports performance, increase our chances of getting sick, and may be related to weight gain in some people. How can we get the sleep we need? Here are some ideas.
Be active in the day. Get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day. Physical activity can reduce stress and help people feel more relaxed. Just don’t work too close to bedtime because exercise can wake you up.
Say goodnight to electronics. Experts suggest using the bedroom for sleep only. At least shut everything down an hour or more before lights out.
Keep a good sleeping habit. Going to bed at the same time every night helps the body expect sleep. Creating a set of bedtime routine can improve this relaxation effect. Spending time with a pet, writing a diary or doing anything else can relax you.
Expect a good night’s sleep. Instead of worrying that you won’t sleep, remind yourself that you can. Say “Tonight, I will sleep well” several times in the day. It can also help to practice breathing exercises or gentle exercises before bed.
Everyone has a sleepless night once in a while. But if you regularly have trouble in sleeping and you think it’s affecting your mood or performance, talk to your doctor.
