Kaleb Chitaphong, who spent numerous nights there as an undergraduate, bought the place. Chitaphong didn't intend to own a bar after graduation, instead hoping to follow his Political Science education through to a Ph.D., and probably find a career in academia. But when his frequented place was facing closure last year during the height of the COVID19 pandemic (疫情), Chitaphong decided he couldn't let that happen. “I grew up in this area, so when finding out the business was closing, I contacted the owner. Initially, I had no plans to buy it. But when we got talking more, things worked out and I was able to gain ownership,” he said. Chitaphong has experience in the restaurant industry from his family. But even with background knowledge, he still had a crash course in owning a bar the hard way——learning the laws, earning his alcohol license, understanding requirements——all during the pandemic. Chitaphong reopened the restaurant this past February, starting small. Although loved by students, Chitaphong's hope for Tin Roof is to attract local residents as well. “It's important for me to have a place where everybody can come and have a good time,” he said. While Chitaphong wants to have a bar that isn't exclusive to just UR students, he also wants to remain close to campus life. “I want it to be a UR bar, in whatever way that means,” he expressed. “I've talked to sports teams of UR to get some jerseys (球衣) hung up.” As COVID19 limitation continues to ease up, Chitaphong has plans to host more events. In addition to Disco Tuesdays, he recently added Karaoke Fridays. He's also planning cooperation with UR's Standup Comedy to try out StandUp Wednesdays. Despite his big plans, Tin Roof isn't Chitaphong's end game. He may open up another business. But right now he's focusing on this space to make it the best time for as many people as possible. 1.What was the root cause of Chitaphong taking over the bar? A.His intention of running a business. B.His emotional attachment to the bar. C.His positive attitude to the pandemic. D.His friendship with the boss of the bar. 根据第二段中“But when his frequented place was facing closure last year during the height of the COVID19 pandemic (疫情), Chitaphong decided he couldn't let that happen. 以及他所说“I grew up in this area, so when finding out the business was closing, I contacted the owner. 2.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Chitaphong? A.His family background. B.His academic performance. C.The characteristics of his restaurant. D.Hard preparations of starting his bar. 根据第三段中“But even with background knowledge, he still had a crash course in owning a bar the hard way—learning the laws, earning his alcohol license, understanding requirements—all during the pandemic. 3.What does the underlined word “exclusive” mean in paragraph 4? A.Familiar. B.Near. C.Specific. D.Harmful. 第4段中划线词句前文“Although loved by students, Chitaphong's hope for Tin Roof is to attract local residents as well. 说明Chitaphong希望他的酒吧能吸引更多的人,而不是专门面对学生的,从而推知划线词句“While Chitaphong wants to have a bar that isn't exclusive to just UR students, he also wants to remain close to campus life. 4.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Tin Roof: The Home of UR Students. B.Chitaphong: A Businessminded Graduate. C.UR Graduate Brings New Life to Tin Roof. D.How Does a Bar Regain Its Appeal to the Public? 通读全文,根据第二段中“But when his frequented place was facing closure last year during the height of the COVID19 pandemic (疫情), Chitaphong decided he couldn't let that happen. 以及最后一段中“Despite his big plans, Tin Roof isn't Chitaphong's end game. B Rehan Staton recently found out he was accepted to Harvard Law School. For him, the sky's the limit, but it wasn't always that way. The 24yearold college student was raised by a single father who worked three different jobs, breaking his back. But, despite his father's best efforts, financial burdens steadily mounted. Staton's study had suffered but he kept pushing himself forward. He said growing up was tough and he used to struggle in school. One teacher even suggested he switch to a special education class. But with help from a free tutor, Staton's grades improved. He continued to improve academically while training to be a professional boxer in high school. However, his choices for college dwindled after suffering an injury, which ruined the chances of him turning professional in sports. He was rejected from every school he applied to. So to help support his family, Staton took a job collecting trash at a local sanitation company, which he said changed his life in ways he never imagined. “Most of my coworkers were formerly imprisoned. So, it caught me by surprise how much the people on the bottom of the society uplifted me and really wanted me to make something of myself,” he told the reporter. “They encouraged me to reapply to college. They had nothing but uplifting words for me and my future.” Through persistence, he took the LSAT and applied to nine schools—getting accepted to five. Ultimately, he decided to commit to Harvard Law School—and he'll never forget all the people who helped him get there. “Throughout this time, people ask me, ‘How did you do it'? It's more so how could I not do it when everyone is breaking their backs for me, and pushing me to win.” Staton said. “When you have a support system, you want to give them your best shot. Because as much as you're investing into yourself, you have others investing into you too.” 5.What can we know about Staton from paragraph 2? A.He received special care from his teacher. B.He used to have poor academic performance. C.He worked three jobs to help support his family. D.He lost sight of his goal due to family difficulties. 根据第二段中“He said growing up was tough and he used to struggle in school. One teacher even suggested he switch to a special education class.(他说他成长的过程很艰难,在学校里也很挣扎。 B。 6.What does the underlined word “dwindled” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Decreased. B.Change. C.Appeared. D.Continued. 根据画线词后文“after suffering an injury, which ruined the chances of him turning professional in sports”可以推知,在一次受伤后,Staton的大学选择减少了,这毁了他成为职业运动员的机会。 A.Decreased.减少;B.Change.改变;C.Appeared.出现;D.Continued.继续。故选A。 7.What made Staton surprised while working as a trash collector? A.The mixed backgrounds of his coworkers. B.The misunderstanding about garbage men. C.The strong encouragement from his coworkers. D.The misfortune of people at the bottom of society. 根据第四段中““Most of my coworkers were formerly imprisoned. So, it caught me by surprise how much the people on the bottom of the society uplifted me and really wanted me to make something of myself,” he told the reporter.(“我的大多数同事以前都曾入狱。 C。 8.What can we infer from the text? A.Courage is resistance to fear and pain. B.Success comes from sweat and support. C.Achievements are going from failure to failure. D.Progress takes place outside the comfort zone. 根据最后一段“Through persistence, he took the LSAT and applied to nine schools—getting accepted to five. Ultimately, he decided to commit to Harvard Law School—and he'll never forget all the people who helped him get there. “Throughout this time, people ask me, ‘How did you do it' it's more so how could I not do it when everyone is breaking their backs for me, and pushing me to win.” Staton said. “When you have a support system, you want to give them your best shot. Because as much as you're investing into yourself, you have others investing into you too.”(通过坚持,他参加了法学院入学考试,申请了九所学校——被五所学校录取。
