A Every summer, the Serengeti plains (平原) of Africa are worth visiting.Millions of wild animals begin their 1,800mile journey northwards on their annual migratory (迁移的) route. In the month of November, polar bears in their thousands cross the Canadian Arctic,as they head towards the ice sheets of Hudson Bay.The sea ice that forms every winter is the key to the bear's managing to exist, for here they hunt for seals (海豹). The Great Bustard, one of the heaviest flying birds, migrates each year across Europe and Asia to its wintering grounds.Unluckily, these and other migratory animals are in danger from human activity. Since 1979,ice sheets in the Arctic have gone down by 30 percent. What does this mean for polar bears? They are forced to stay on land for longer periods of time, which delays their search for food.As a result, bears today are 60 pounds lighter than what they were.Besides, smaller bears also produce weaker babies, and their chances of survival are at risk.In the plains of Africa, migratory animals like gazelles are traveling long distances for food, just to avoid falling prey (牺牲品) to humans who hunt them. In an unusual step, experts from 120 countries have agreed to protect 31 migratory mammals, fish and birds. The United Nation's 11th annual Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) was held in Quito,Ecuador. For the first time,900 experts attended the conference, and the enthusiastic support shows the world is united in conservation (保护) efforts. What does getting on a protected list mean?Countries that have signed the agreement will be required to pass laws locally and work with other countries that fall within the animal's migratory path.Only one animal did not make the list. The African lion was rejected (拒绝) for lack of information of the countries where it lives. 1.What can we learn from the passage? A.The Great Bustard is one of the largest flying birds. B.The weight of polar bears today is lighter than what it was. C.In the 1970s,ice sheets went down by 30 percent. D.120 experts have agreed to protect 21 migratory animals. 根据第四段中的“As a result, bears today are 60 pounds lighter than what they were.” 2.Why was the African lion not included on the list from the passage? A.We don't know which countries it lives in. B.It isn't a migratory animal. C.Experts were not interested in this animal. D.It was not travelling long distances for food. 根据最后一段中的“Only one animal did not make the list. The African lion was rejected (拒绝) for lack of information of the countries where it lives.” 3.The writer writes this passage aiming to . A.let us know about the animals B.prevent the rare animals from dying out C.inform us of the effects of climate change D.draw our attention to helping the migratory animals D B In one of the world's most forbidding environments, polar bears spend their summers roaming (漫步) the Arctic on large pieces of floating ice. They drift (漂移) for hundreds of miles, finding mates, hunting for seals, and fatting themselves up for the winter.Without the floating ice,the world's largest bears could not survive.Yet at this moment, the polar bears' Arctic habitat (栖息地) is melting away under it because of global warming. Over the past three decades, more than a million square miles of floating ice has disappeared.Scientists predict that,if the current rate of global warming continues, most,if not all,of the bears' floating ice will be gone by 2100.As a result, the world's polar bears could face global dying out by the end of this century. Already, the ice on the southern edge of the polar bears' habitat is melting about three weeks earlier than in the past. The loss of those key weeks leaves the bears less time to hunt, eat and store up fat.Once the ice melts, the bears must fast for up to eight months on land until the floating ice returns. As a result of early melting, there has been a 14 percent decline in the Hudson Bay polar bear population over the past ten years-a fall clearly caused by global warming. Besides,a growing number of polar bears may be drowning (溺水) as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, looking for ice sheets(冰原).According to a report by the US Minerals Management Service, researchers observed four dead polar bears floating 60 miles off Alaska in September of 2006 and said it was likely that many other bears swimming far off shore also drowned.Scientists have concluded that the worldwide population of about 20,000 polar bears is likely to become smaller by more than 30 percent in the next 35 to 50 years alone. 4.What do polar bears usually do in summer? A.Look for relatives. B.Hunt for food. C.Store crops up. D.Make friends with seals. 根据第一段中的“They drift(漂移) for hundreds of miles...up for the winter.” B。 5.What disaster will happen to polar bears by the end of this century according to the text? A.Global drowning. B.Global dying out. C.Global hunger. D.Global roaming. 根据第二段最后一句“As a result, the world's polar bears...by the end of this century.” B。 6.What can be inferred from the underlined part in Paragraph 3? A.The bears will have to stay hungry longer. B.The bears will have to roam faster. C.The bears will have to stay quieter on land. D.The bears will have to face a faster fall of its population. 根据第三段中的“Already, the ice on the southern edge of...to hunt, eat and store up fat.” A。 7.Why do polar bears have to swim more often and farther? A.To search for food. B.To build up bodies to survive. C.To find places to land on. D.To escape being hunted. 根据最后一段第一句“Besides,a growing number of...and for longer distances, looking for ice sheets(冰原).” Ⅱ. Keeping curious kids from disrupting wildlife Interacting with the wild, naturally curious kids tend to collect seashells at the beach or keep small wildlife as pets. 1 So how to help kids protect the wild while enjoying spending time outsides? Here are alternatives for some of the most common outdoor behavior nonos. Take an interest, not things. Kids show interest in picking flowers, rocks, or shells outdoors. They're part of wildlife's habitat and play an important role. 2 Let kids explore with a magnifying glass (放大镜)instead of their curious fingers. Let whatever they find outside stay outside. 3 It seems a fun idea to throw pieces of bread to ducks. Animals have unique dietary needs that are different from humans. Eating human food can make them sick or become dependent on human food. Bears are an example of animals that often have to be killed after developing a taste for human food. Admire animal afar, not disrupt nearby. The urge to take a photo with a squirrel, bird, or slowmoving turtle can be strong for kids. 4 Instead, remind kids to stay away and show them how to use a camera's zoom button, or just admire with their eyes. Take wellworn paths, not offroad romps (嬉戏). Kicking piles of leaves, stepping on bushes, and walking through forested areas can unintentionally scare wildlife. If surprised animals defend their homes, everyone could get hurt. Nobody likes having a guest come in and destroy their home and act rudely. 5 A.Keep snacks away from animals. B.Share food if animals are hungry. C.Exposure to them develops kids' love and curiosity. D.The same rule applies to visiting wildlife in their homes. E.Animals rely on plants for hiding; rocks and shells, for homes. F.Approaching animals disrupts what they do for survival, such as eating. G.Despite innocent purposes, kids' curiosity accidentally damages the wild. 1.G 上文“Interacting with the wild, naturally curious kids tend to collect seashells at the beach or keep small wildlife as pets.(与野生动物互动,生性好奇的孩子倾向于在海滩收集贝壳或养小型野生动物作为宠物。)” 2.E 上文“Kids show interest in picking flowers, rocks, or shells outdoors. They're part of wildlife's habitat and play an important role.(孩子们对在户外采摘花朵、岩石或贝壳表现出兴趣。 选项中plants以及rocks and shells和上文中flowers, rocks, or shells语义相关,文意通顺,逻辑合理。故选E项。 3.A 下文“Animals have unique dietary needs that are different from humans. Eating human food can make them sick or become dependent on human food.(动物有着与人类不同的独特的饮食需求。 故选A项。 5.D 上文“Nobody likes having a guest come in and destroy their home and act rudely.(没有人喜欢有客人闯进来,破坏他们的房子,行为粗鲁。)” The Chinese government recently finalized a plan to set up a Giant Panda National Park (GPNP). 1.
