Imagine the feeling of swinging at a baseball going 100 miles per hour—without leaving your living room, or being in race car as it roars down the track, while you are sitting on the couch.
These are just some of the ways that sports business leaders say virtual reality (VR) will revolutionize how people train for and experience sports. Virtual and augmented(增强的)realities are together known as mixed reality (MR). “American footballers are already using VR to better train their minds and__read__the__field,” Ludden said. “This can allow players to perfect their skills without risking injury.”
Canadian company DBOX Technologies designs and produces moving seats found in cinema and theme parks. It is now moving into sports, and shows its Formula One (F1) racing simulator (模拟器). The seats stimulate the force of gravity, speed and every shaking as Fl champion Lewis Hamilton zips around city streets.
A simulation seat uses preprogramed data now. Someday, though, it could use realtime information sent by the car. “They could broadcast live content through a network in popup theaters around the world,” Ludden said. Say you want to experience the true stress of a batter being up against majorleague baseball pitcher. “You can have a heartbeat added to the sensation on the seat and then you can feel it, boom, boom,” Maheu explained. “When he swings and hits the ball, you can have an impact.”
One day, fans around the world could physically experience every game from their favorite player in real time. Ludden said that current and nearfuture technology could create “augmented stadiums” for live audiences. Panasonic launched its “Smart Venue” plans which included the overlaying of graphics, advertisements, player statistics and replays on the field of play at a pro football game. “If you are seated in the cheap seats, you can see this really useful.” “Fans may someday join in stadium wide games, using the field as a virtual gaming platform,” Ludden added.

Debra Avery has been a horse lover since she was a little girl in San Diego. Her family couldn't afford a horse of its own,so Debra borrowed rides at the local horseriding center, gaining the confidence only found atop a horse. Years later,Debra remembered those early days, and the lessons she learned with the horses at the riding center, and wanted to help other young women get the benefits of connecting with horses. “I always wanted to run a horse program for girls like me”says Debra. “I wanted to help them gain the courage to be around a horse and to care for a horse.”
One day at the Los Angeles Horseriding Center,as Debra rode beside fellow rider Judith Hopkins, she mentioned an inheritance (遗产) from her fatherinlaw and her desire to use it to serve disadvantaged girls. Judith had the same dream—and a name for the organization.
They founded Taking the Reins(TTR)in 1998. The organization serves more than 400 young women per year in afterschool, weekend, and summer programs that feature horse riding and care, gardening and even competitive horse showing. Most participants live below the poverty line and often have not had reliable housing for more than six months at a time. Few have previous horse experience.
TTR uses farm and ranch experiences to teach responsibility, leadership, teamwork, and selfconfidence.Director Dr. Jane Haven says,“A large number of our girls are somewhat autistic(孤独症的). I can't count how many of them have found their first social friends thanks to sharing this hobby and activity. Horses bring them out in such a wonderful way.”
Jane also sees members of TTR program excel in school—100 percent of young women involved for four years or more have graduated from high school. Ninetynine percent of those participants have gone on to attend fouryear colleges.
Debra sees a more obvious impact—after a few weeks in the TTR program, the young women sit a little higher in their saddles (马鞍). “There's just something about sitting up on the back of a horse that gives them a boost of confidence.”
