Unit 6 E Writing教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Learn to write about the invention of paper, understanding the use of time order words to describe the process and explaining why paper is important.
Master the use of time order words (e.g., to start with, next, then, at last, soon) to organize the writing about the papermaking process.
Improve writing skills by following the steps of studying a model, ordering sentences, writing, checking, and peer review.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key words & phrases
invention, paper, papermaking process, time order words, soak, boil, spread, dry, thin sheet, important invention
2. Key sentences
To start with, he bent a piece of wire to match the shape of his head.
Next, he made two ear - shaped circles out of the wire.
Then, he asked his grandmother to add fur to each circle.
At last, his invention was born.
Soon, everyone in town was wearing earmuffs.
People wrote on silk, wood, bamboo, and leather until paper was invented in China.
In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Cai Lun tried to improve the papermaking process.
He made the paper from some tree bark, rags, and fishing nets.
First, he mixed the fibres together and soaked them.
Next, he boiled the mixture in water.
Then, he spread the softened mixture on a flat piece of cloth.
After that, the mixture formed into a thin sheet.
Finally, he let them dry in the sun.
Cai Lun made something amazing—paper.
Paper is one of the most important inventions in history because...
What/How...! (e.g., What an important invention paper is! How amazing the papermaking process is!)
3. Key and challenging points
Understand and use time order words correctly to describe the sequence of the papermaking process.
Include the importance of paper and use “What/How...!” sentences to express feelings about the invention.
Check and review the writing for correct time order, content about paper's importance, and proper use of exclamatory sentences.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Study a model (Step 1)
Analyze the model sentences
T: Study a model. Circle the time order words in the sentences. Look at the sentences about the earmuffs invention: “To start with... Next... Then... At last... Soon...”.
Ask Ss to identify and circle time order words, then review the list of time order words (before, first, next, last, etc.). Discuss how these words organize the sequence of events.
Step 2 Order sentences and use time order words (Step 2)
Order the papermaking steps
T: Rita learned the papermaking process. Study her notes and put the sentences about the process in the correct order. Then fill in the blanks with proper time order words.
The steps: mix fibres and soak → boil mixture → spread softened mixture → mixture forms thin sheet → let dry in sun. Ask Ss to order the sentences and choose time order words (First, Next, Then, After that, Finally). Then check as a class.
Step 3 Write about the invention of paper (Step 3)
Complete the passage
T: Write. Complete the passage about “The invention of paper” with the ordered information and time order words. Include the importance of paper and a “What/How...!” sentence.
Guide Ss to write the passage: start with paper's invention context, describe Cai Lun's papermaking steps using time order words, explain paper's importance, and add an exclamatory sentence. Walk around to provide help.
Step 4 Self - check (Step 4)
Check the writing
T: Read your own writing and answer the questions: Did you use proper time order words? Write about paper's importance? Use “What/How...!” sentences properly?
Ask Ss to check their writing against the questions, correcting any mistakes.
Step 5 Peer review (Step 5)
Exchange and review
T: Exchange your writing with another student. Answer the questions: Does the writer use proper time order words? Mention paper's importance? Use “What/How...!” sentences properly?
Ask Ss to review their partner's writing and give feedback, helping each other improve.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' ability to analyze the model and identify time order words by checking their answers in Step 1.
Observe whether Ss can order papermaking steps and use time order words correctly in Step 2.
Evaluate Ss' writing skills by observing their passage in Step 3, checking time order, content about paper's importance, and exclamatory sentences.
Assess Ss' self - checking and peer review abilities by observing their answers to the check questions.
This lesson helps Ss learn to write about the invention of paper, improving writing organization, content detail, and accuracy.
V. Design Purpose
Studying the model helps Ss understand the use of time order words to organize writing about a process.
Ordering papermaking steps and using time order words trains Ss to sequence events and apply organizational vocabulary.
Writing, self - checking, and peer review provide a complete writing process, helping Ss improve through practice and feedback.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit E Writing “The invention of paper”
Time order words: to start with, next, then, at last, soon, first, after that, finally
Papermaking process steps:
Mix fibres and soak.
Boil the mixture.
Spread softened mixture.
Mixture forms thin sheet.
Let dry in sun.
Key sentences:
Paper is one of the most important inventions in history because...
What an important invention paper is! / How amazing the papermaking process is!
VII. Homework
Polish the paper invention passage written in class based on self - check and peer review.
Research another important invention and write a short paragraph about its invention process, using time order words.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
The step - by - step writing process effectively helped Ss organize their ideas and write about the invention of paper. Ss showed good understanding of time order words and including paper's importance. However, some Ss struggled with using “What/How...!” sentences naturally and choosing varied time order words. In future lessons, more targeted practice on exclamatory sentences and time order word variety can be provided.
