I. Teaching Objectives
Master the usage of “when” and “because” clauses to talk about time and reasons respectively.
Be able to form complex sentences by joining two sentences with “when” or “because”.
Improve the ability to use “when” and “because” clauses in speaking and writing, enhancing grammatical accuracy and communicative competence.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key structures
“because” clause: Used to talk about reasons.
“when” clause: Used to talk about time.
Complex sentences: Made by joining a main clause and a dependent clause with “because” or “when”.
2. Key sentences
I feel free like a bird when I’m cycling.
She tries to get eight hours of sleep every night because she believes getting enough sleep keeps her active during the day.
We should drink enough water because water is important to our health.
When I’m tired, I sometimes drink a little coffee.
Walking is good exercise because I want to walk to school.
Susan likes listening to music when she is sad.
3. Key and challenging points
Understand the functions of “when” (time) and “because” (reason) clauses.
Correctly form complex sentences using “when” or “because” to join two sentences.
Use “when” and “because” clauses accurately in different contexts.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Lead - in
Show sentences from the article “Wendy’s healthy life” with “when” and “because” (e.g., “I feel free like a bird when I’m cycling.” “She tries to get eight hours of sleep every night because she believes getting enough sleep keeps her active during the day.”).
T: What do the words “when” and “because” mean in these sentences? Invite Ss to answer. Then say: Today, we will learn about “when” and “because” clauses.
Step 2 Study “when” and “because” clauses (Activity C1)
Analyze sentences
T: Study the blue parts and answer the questions: What do the blue words mean? What are the parts before and after the blue words?
Explain the grammar highlights: Use “because” for reasons, “when” for time; complex sentences have a main clause and a dependent clause.
Identify clauses
Ask Ss to identify the main clause and dependent clause in the example sentences.
Step 3 Join sentences (Activity C2)
Practice with “because” and “when”
T: Join the two sentences with the words in brackets (“because” or “when”).
Ask Ss to join the sentences, forming complex sentences. Then check the answers.
Step 4 Match habits and reasons (Activity C3)
Connect habits and reasons
T: Match the habits with the reasons using “because” clauses.
Ask Ss to match the habits (e.g., “I don’t eat much sweet food”) with the correct reasons (e.g., “because it is bad for my teeth”). Then check the answers.
Step 5 Speaking practice (Activity C4)
Oral practice
T: Work in pairs. Ask and answer questions about different feelings. Use the words in the box to help you.
Divide Ss into pairs and ask them to practice conversations using “when” clauses to talk about feelings. Then invite some pairs to share their dialogues.
Step 6 Complete the passage (Activity C5)
Writing practice
T: Complete the passage with “when” or “because”.
Ask Ss to fill in the blanks with “when” or “because” to complete the passage about ways to feel better. Then check the answers.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' understanding of “when” and “because” clauses by observing their answers in Activities C1 and C2.
Observe whether Ss can match habits and reasons correctly in Activity C3.
Evaluate Ss' oral communication skills by observing their conversations in Activity C4, checking the use of “when” clauses.
Assess Ss' writing skills by observing their completion of the passage in Activity C5, checking the use of “when” and “because” clauses.
This lesson helps Ss master “when” and “because” clauses, improving grammatical accuracy and ability to talk about time and reasons.
V. Design Purpose
The lead - in connects to the previous reading article, activating Ss' prior knowledge and introducing the lesson topic.
Studying sentences and grammar highlights explains the rules of “when” and “because” clauses. Joining sentences and matching habits/reasons provide written practice.
Speaking and writing activities offer practice in applying “when” and “because” clauses in real - life contexts, enhancing communicative competence.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit C Grammar “when and because clauses”
“because” clause: talks about reasons
“when” clause: talks about time
Complex sentence structure: main clause + when/because + dependent clause
Example sentences:
We should drink enough water because water is important to our health.
When I’m tired, I sometimes drink a little coffee.
VII. Homework
Review the rules of “when” and “because” clauses.
Write five sentences using “when” clauses and five sentences using “because” clauses to describe your daily life or feelings.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
The activities effectively helped Ss learn “when” and “because” clauses. Ss showed good understanding in written tasks. However, some Ss might still confuse the usage of “when” (time) and “because” (reason) in certain contexts. In future lessons, more targeted practice on distinguishing their usage can be provided.
