Once he told a joke about his pet in class and we all laughed.
Tom likes swimming very much. He started swimming at the age of five.

3. Key and challenging points
Organize ideas about a best friend using a mind map (name, things done together, personality, hobby).
Use simple present tense and simple past tense correctly to describe different aspects of a best friend.
Write a coherent passage with clear structure (beginning, body, ending) and correct punctuation.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Study a model (Step 1)
Read the model passage
T: Jack is introducing his best friend, Tom. Read the introduction and complete the mind map below.
Ask Ss to read the model passage, identify the information about Tom (name, things done together, personality, hobby), and fill in the mind map. Then check together.
Step 2 Brainstorm (Step 2)
Think and draw a mind map
T: Think about your best friend and draw a mind map. Include name, things you do together, personality, and hobby.
Ask Ss to draw their own mind maps about their best friends. Invite some Ss to share their mind maps.
Step 3 Write (Step 3)
Write the passage
T: Use the information from your mind map to write about your best friend. Follow the structure: beginning (introduce your best friend), body (write about things done together, personality, hobby), ending (express feelings).
Guide Ss to write their passages, paying attention to tense usage (simple present for general facts, simple past for past events) and punctuation.
Step 4 Check (Step 4)
Self - check
T: Read your own writing and answer the questions:
Did you tell your readers about your friend’s personality, hobby, and things you do together?
Did you use the simple present tense and the simple past tense correctly?
Did you use end marks correctly?
Ask Ss to check their own writing based on these questions.
Step 5 Peer review (Step 5)
Exchange and review
T: Exchange your writing with another student. Answer the questions:
What does the writer tell you in his or her writing?
Does the writer use the simple present tense and the simple past tense correctly?
Does the writer use end marks correctly?
Ask Ss to review their partner's writing and give feedback.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' ability to organize ideas using a mind map by checking their completed mind maps in Step 1 and Step 2.
Observe whether Ss can write a coherent passage with correct tense usage and punctuation in Step 3.
Evaluate Ss' self - checking and peer review abilities by observing their answers to the check questions.
This lesson helps Ss learn to write about their best friends, improving writing organization, tense accuracy, and punctuation use.
V. Design Purpose
Studying the model helps Ss understand the structure and language of writing about a best friend. Completing the mind map trains them to organize ideas systematically.
Brainstorming encourages Ss to think about their own best friends and prepare content for writing.
Writing, self - checking, and peer review provide a complete writing process, helping Ss improve writing skills through practice and feedback.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit E Writing “My best friend”

VIII. Teaching Reflection
The step - by - step writing process effectively helped Ss organize their ideas and write about their best friends. Ss showed good understanding of using a mind map. However, some Ss might need more practice in using simple present and past tenses correctly and developing detailed descriptions. In future lessons, more targeted practice on these aspects can be provided.
