Teaching Procedures (45 minutes) Step 1 Fact - Place Matching (10 minutes) (1a) Task: Students match the facts they know with the places (Qomolangma, the Sahara, the Caspian Sea, the Nile): Qomolangma — 8,848.6 meters high The Sahara — about 9,000,000 square kilometers in size The Caspian Sea — 1,025 meters deep The Nile — 6,671 kilometers long Discuss as a class, checking answers and introducing each place briefly. Step 2 Listening Comprehension (10 minutes) (1b) Task: Play the 1b audio. Students complete the sentences: Qomolangma is higher than any other mountain in the world. The Sahara is the largest desert in the world. The Caspian Sea is the deepest of all the salt lakes. The Nile is the longest river in the world. (2a) Task: Play the 2a audio. Students number the facts [1 - 3] in the order they hear them. (2b) Task: Play audio again. Students fill in the blanks in 2a with the numbers in the box: The Yangtze River is about 6,300 kilometers long and the Yellow River is 5,464 kilometers long. China is over 5,000 years old. It has a much longer history than the US. The US is not even 300 years old. China is bigger than the US, and it is the biggest country in Asia. Play audio again for confirmation. Step 3 Making Conversations (10 minutes) (1c) Task: Students use the information in 1b to make conversations. Example: A: What is the highest mountain in the world? B: Qomolangma. A: What is the largest desert in the world? B: The Sahara. (2c) Task: Students make conversations using the information in 2a. Example: A: Did you know that China is one of the oldest countries in the world? B: Yes, I did. It's much older than my country. A: And China is also bigger than the US. B: Yes, and the Yangtze River is very long. Students practice in pairs. Step 4 Role - playing Tour Guide Conversation (10 minutes) (2d) Task: Students role - play the conversation between a guide and tourists about the Great Wall: Guide: Feel free to ask me anything on today's Great Wall tour. Tourist 1: How long is the wall? Guide: Ah, the most popular question! If we're only talking about the parts from the Ming Dynasty, it's about 8,850 kilometers long. This makes it the longest wall in the world. Tourist 2: Wow, that's amazing! Why did the ancient emperors build the wall? Guide: The main reason was to protect their part of the country. As you can see, it's quite tall and wide. As far as I know, there are no other man - made objects as big as this. Tourist 3: Is Badaling part of the Ming Great Wall? Guide: Yes, it's the most famous part. Students practice in groups, then perform in front of the class. Step 5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary: Recap fact - place matching, comparative/superlative usage, and conversations about geography. Homework: Write five sentences about different geographical features using comparative and superlative forms. Find more information about a geographical place you're interested in and share it with the class next time. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
