The Mexican axolotl has a strange 1 . It has a long body, short legs and a long tail. It can regrow almost any lost body part. Some scientists think the information could provide a (n) 2 to some medical (医学的) problems. The 3 news is that the number of axolotls is dropping greatly these years. In 1998, there were about 6,000 axolotls per square kilometre in Lake Xochimilco. “We know the 10 of doing that. And we know what to do and where to do it,” Zambrano said. “But if people don’t care much, it doesn’t matter what we know.”

Humans, don’t come too close!
When we see babies or pets, we can’t help touching them to show our love. And they give us 1 back. But recently (最近), a study shows that it’s different for plants.
The study in the newspaper China Daily shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because that changes their genes (基因) and even worse, can slow their 2 .
Professor Jim Whelan from a university in Australia gave an explanation (解释). “The lightest touch from a human, an animal, an insect, or even plants touching each other in the wind, 3 a huge gene change in the plant,” Science Daily reported.
Scientists did an experiments (实验) on plants, 4 to test this idea. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a paintbrush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period.
They found that after being touched, the mitochondria (线粒体) in the plants were 5 . The mitochondria are the “power house of the cell (细胞) ”. It’s one of 6 parts of the plants. If this power house is not strong enough, the plants will lose a large amount of 7 that should help them grow.
Whelan 8 explained, “If we touch the plants once, it will not be that bad. But after doing that again and again, plant growth will go down by up to 30 percent.” So stop doing that many times.
Although the touching makes a difference to plants, usually the plants can continue (继续) to live. Touching changes the plants, but it’s not always a bad change. The researchers believe this change, in some way, could be 9 . It may help plants fight dangers to their health such as insects and bad weather as long as we don’t touch them repeatedly (重复地).
So in order 10 plants, we shouldn’t touch them too often. Let’s help plants have a good change.
