V. Teaching Procedures (45 minutes)
Step 1 Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show pictures of people climbing mountains in different weather. Ask: "How do we feel about the weather when climbing a mountain? Let's see Helen and Peter's experiences." Have students discuss in pairs about what they think they can see, hear, or feel when climbing a mountain, then invite 2 - 3 pairs to share.
Step 2 While - learning (20 minutes)
1b Reading and Analyzing (7 minutes)
Students read the posts by Helen and Peter. Then discuss in pairs: "Are they visiting the same place? Do they feel the same about it?" Guide them to find evidence from the posts, like Helen's positive descriptions ("The clouds look amazing... It feels like a magical place.") and Peter's less positive ones ("I'm not really enjoying the experience... Everything looks grey...").
1c Completing Descriptions (8 minutes)
Students read the posts again and complete Helen's and Peter's descriptions about their trip in the table. For example:
Helen (6:35 - 7:22, Mount Huangshan): "The mountain feels like a magical place. The trees and rocks look like a part of a painting." → Feeling: positive (use ☺).
Peter (6:35, Mount Huangshan): "Everything looks grey, and you can't see much because of the heavy fog. His family has to climb slowly." → Feeling: negative (use ☹).
Walk around to assist with reading comprehension and table - filling.
1d Answering Questions (5 minutes)
Students read the posts again and complete the questions with question words (Why, Who, How, Where, What) and answer them. For example:
Where did Helen and Peter see the tourists? → At a rest area.
What does Helen think about the trees and rocks? → She thinks they look like a part of a painting.
Who enjoys the experience more at the start? Why do you think so? → Helen. Because she says "It feels like a magical place." while Peter says "I'm not really enjoying the experience."
How does Peter feel at the end? → He feels tired but happy to be at the top.
Check answers as a class.
Step 3 Post - learning (17 minutes)
2a Completing Passage (8 minutes)
Students complete the passage about a storm with the correct forms of the words in brackets. The correct answers are: "I am sitting in my room and looking out of the window. It is raining very hard. The rain is pouring down. The wind is blowing hard too. A man in the street looks angry. He is shouting and running after his hat!"
Walk around to assist with verb form choices (present continuous tense for ongoing actions).
2b Drawing and Describing (9 minutes)
Students draw a picture of some people experiencing a heavy storm or another type of weather.
Then, they write a description of their actions, using the present continuous tense. For example: "It's a rainy day. A woman is holding an umbrella tightly. A boy is running to avoid the rain."
Invite several students to share their drawings and descriptions.
Step 4 Summary and Homework (3 minutes)
Summary: Recap vocabulary about mountain climbing experiences and feelings, sentence patterns for describing experiences, and the use of present continuous tense in describing ongoing actions.
Homework:
Polish the description written in 2b and share it with a classmate.
Think of one more weather situation and describe people's actions in it, using the present continuous tense.
