Analysis of Students Learning Situation:
Through previewing, I found that students have a basic understanding of the main idea of the article, and most are quite interested in this piece. However, they still face some difficulties in understanding certain vocabulary, complex sentences, and compound sentences. Therefore, in my teaching, I use images to present the story, making abstract language more tangible. By fostering peer collaboration and group work, I aim to promote interaction among students, cultivate their interest in learning English, and develop their ability for independent and cooperative learning.
Teaching Aims:
1. Language Competence
1) Students can understand and master new words and phrases such as “hate, while, argue, proper” etc.
2) Be able to summarize the main idea of the passage and find out key details.
2. Cultural Awareness
Realize cultural norms in dealing with family chores and making requests among family members.
3. Thinking Ability
Understand the importance of family members sharing housework and cultivate a sense of responsibility and a spirit of cooperation.
4. Learning Ability
Develop reading strategies like skimming, scanning and inferring.
Teaching Key and Difficulty Points:
1. Key points:
(1). Master new vocabulary and phrases, and use the sentence “Could you please...”.
(2). Grasp the main idea and key details of the passage.
2. Difficult points:
(1). Help students analyze the complex sentences in the passage.
(2). Guide students to overcome the obstacles in understanding long and difficult sentences.
Teaching Procedures:
Step 1. Warm up
Review the key phrases learned in the last class.
Ask some students to say English according to the Chinese one by one, then read aloud together.
Step 2. Pre-reading
Give students two questions to lead them to the passage.
Step 3. While-reading
1. Fast reading
Ask students read the passage quickly. Meanwhile, find the text type of the passage and the main characters,the event, and the place.
Ask students read again with skills of skimming.
First, read quickly and find the time order. Second, ask students how many scenes can the passage be divided into. Third, match the scenes with right pictures.
2. Careful reading
These tasks require students to discuss in groups and then answer. According to the scene 1, students need to read carefully,and finish the chart about the main characters Nancy and her mom,including what they did and what their feelings were.
Then read two questions and find the answers.
Q1: Why was Nancy’s mom angry with her?
Q2: What did Nancy do to her mother?
According to the scene 2 and 3, read carefully and finish the questions.
At scene 2, there are three questions. At scene 3, students need to complete the blanks. Invite students answer these questions.
Then, guide students to summarize the sentence: It’s our duty to help out with the housework.
Step 4 Post-reading
Guide students choose the best title and call on students to help with housework at home.
Complete the exercises in the book and correct the answers.
Step 5 Homework
1. Master the new words and expressions.
2. Write a short passage to retell the story of Nancy and her mom.
Teaching Reflection:
1. This reading lesson will guide students to master reading strategies.
2. Emphasize the more difficult structure: as soon as..., come over, neither, in surprise.
3. In the teaching process, we should pay attention to guiding students to understand the articles in 3a.
