Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12, 000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6, 000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day as interest.
Then a kind old lady called Widow (寡妇) Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven't got a family or a home. My mother died a long ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a rude man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with the widow. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn't like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
Widow Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn't like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn't mind going.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school, I saw some footprints outside the widow's house. There was a cross on the heel of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left head! Pap!
“He has heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it!”
That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. There was a spirit inside the ball that could answer people’s questions about the future.

Donald Trump won the 2024 US presidential election! According to the media, Trump received at least 270 electoral votes, which is more than half of the 538 votes needed to win. Trump’s victory was supported by a strong base of voters who admired his economic policies, such as tax cuts and job creation, and his tough attitude on immigration.
Do you know electoral system (选举制度) in the United States?
In the US, people don’t directly vote for the President. Instead, they vote for “electors” who represent their state, which called the “Electoral College” (选举人团制度). Each state has a certain number of electors, based on how many senators and representatives it has in Congress. There are 538 electors in total.
To become President, a candidate (候选人)needs to win more than half of these electors’ votes, which is 270 votes. Most states have a “winner-takes-all” rule. This means the candidate who gets the most votes in that state wins all of its electors.
Before the election, each party holds primaries to choose their candidate. People vote in these primaries to say who they want to represent their party. Then, the candidates from the two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, campaign (竞选) across the country. They tell people why they should be President.
On Election Day, people go to polling places to vote. Some states also allow early voting or mail-in voting. After all the votes are counted, we know who the electors will vote for. Then, in January, the electors meet and cast their votes for President.
The person who gets the most elector votes becomes the President. They take office on January 20th, the day after Inauguration Day (美国总统就职日), and promise to follow the Constitution. This system has been used in the US since the18th century to make sure every state’s voice is heard in choosing the President.
33. How many electoral votes are needed to win the US presidential election?
A. 250. B. 260. C. 270. D. 280.
34. What is the “winner-takes-all” rule in most US states?
A. The candidate with the most votes nationwide wins all the electors.
B. Each candidate gets some electors based on their votes.
C. The candidate who gets the most votes in a state wins all of its electors.
D. All candidates share the electors equally.
35. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. People directly vote for the President. B. The “Electoral College” system is used.
C. There are 538 electors in total. D. People go to polling places to vote on Election Day.
36. What is the main purpose of the US electoral system?
A. To make the election process faster.
B. To be sure that every state’s voice is heard.
C. To reduce the cost of elections.
D. To increase the number of voters.

Can a small group of drones (无人机) make sure the railways are safe and reliable and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of using today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure (基础设施) worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to check railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be checked, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend nearly 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to check and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews' efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher - value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail don't need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future-They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run automatically. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
37. What makes the use of drones to rail lines possible?
A. The use of drones in checking on power lines.
B. Drones’ ability to work at high altitudes.
C. The reduction of cost in designing drones.
D. Drones’ reliable performance in remote areas.
38. What does the “maintenance” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C. Check and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
39. What function (功能) is expected of the rail drones?
A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To speed up transportation.
40. Which is the best title for the text?
A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C. What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D. How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
