As a very shy person, I 13 getting on stage and acting in front of strangers. However, I knew I wanted to work as a science communicator after graduating, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to improve my speaking ability and build confidence. I signed up, knowing the 14 would take me well outside my comfort zone. During our first class, we learned an important idea of improvisation: “yes, and.” It means that we accept what other performers say. If someone says that monkeys are librarians, for example, then monkeys are librarians. We do not 15 the logic (逻辑); we say “yes” and continue with the scene (场景) as if nothing is wrong. To do this effectively, our teacher warned us that we’d have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improvisation happens when performers stay open to 16 possibilities and say whatever comes into their minds. I got a taste of the 17 when acting out my first scene. However, as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes. I also became better at listening, relating to my partners, and communicating clearly. That training came in handy two weeks ago, when I was giving a speech about my science. A student surprised me with a question that came out of nowhere. Instead of getting nervous, I used the “yes, and” method— 18 the question at face value and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me stay calm and finally find a proper answer. The benefits of improvisation go beyond communication. Early on in school, I would get stuck when 19 data was produced in my experiments; my inner critic would suppose I had made a mistake. But now, after using the “yes, and” method, I no longer go into an experiment thinking that I already know the story my data are going to tell. This lesson can 20 all scientists. If the data say monkeys are librarians, then it’s worth studying whether monkeys are, in fact, librarians. Our job as scientists isn’t to produce data that support a story that we already know. Our job is to say “yes, and”. 13.A.feared B.tried C.considered D.regretted 14.A.experience B.service C.experiment D.treatment 15.A.use B.believe C.understand D.question 16.A.real B.different C.serious D.strong 17.A.difficulty B.success C.loneliness D.joy 18.A.asking B.repeating C.accepting D.improving 19.A.unknown B.unshown C.unchecked D.unexpected 20.A.confuse B.benefit C.trouble D.satisfy 【答案】 根据“As a very shy person”可知作者是一个很害羞的人,所以他害怕上台表演。故选A。 14. 故选A。 15. 根据“we say ‘yes’ and continue with the scene (场景) as if nothing is wrong.” 根据“Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions.” 根据“However, as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable and even started to enjoy our classes.” 故选A。 18. 根据“I used the ‘yes, and’ method”可知我表面上接受了这个问题。故选C。 19. 根据“But now, after using the ‘yes, and’ method, I no longer go into an experiment thinking that I already know the story my data are going to tell.” A The Most Popular Cartoons and TV Series for Children AIf History Is a Group of Meows This series introduces Chinese history in a cute and exciting way. There are two paths we can take in any given situation: one is the path of avoiding pain in the moment, and the other is the more difficult path of delaying (推迟) pleasure for a bigger purpose. Some people don’t see the value in having patience during difficult times or working toward a goal; they want to lose the weight now and would rather buy the latest, greatest cell phone than save for retirement. We often make our life choices according to how we can avoid pain in the moment and, in doing so, fail to see that the path of delayed gratification (满足) is sometimes where the real solutions to our problems lie. Studies show that delayed gratification is one of the most effective personal qualities of successful people. People who learn how to manage their needs to be satisfied in the moment thrive (蓬勃发展) more in their careers, relationships and health than people who give in to them. A well-known study conducted at Stanford University in the1960s explains a lot about why it’s beneficial to delay gratification. In the study, children were placed in a room with one marshmallow on a plate. The lead researcher gave the children an easy instruction: You can eat the marshmallow now, or wait 15 minutes and receive two marshmallows. The researchers found that the children who were able to wait for the second marshmallow without eating the first one scored higher on standardized tests, had better health, and were less likely to have behavior problems. Consider the results of this study, and think about yourself and your actions. Are you able to wait for things you really want, even if it involves giving up pleasure and satisfaction now? Do you make decisions based on your life purpose or on what feels good now? Do you sometimes give up too soon? Can you think of a time when you successfully completed a difficult task? How did it make you feel about yourself? What were the results of waiting? Delaying gratification isn’t a new concept. Back in 300 B.C., Aristotle saw that the reason why so many people were unhappy was that they confused pleasure for true happiness. True happiness according to Aristotle, is about developing habits and surrounding yourself with people who grow your soul. This allows you to move toward your greatest natural ability. True happiness needs delaying pleasure, and putting in the time, discipline and patience required to achieve a goal instead of feeling good now. A life of purpose, aligned (保持一致) with the seeking of true happiness, creates real joy. It keeps your happiness meter pretty steady throughout your life. So, which path would you like to take? 27.People who delay gratification will probably _________. A.work hard patiently for a bigger goal B.avoid pain and give up in the moment C.fail to see where the real solutions to their problems lie D.succeed easily in their careers, relationships and health 28.Why does the writer mention the well-known study? A.To show children’s different choices. B.To tell readers the study was very scientific. C.To prove the value of putting off gratification. D.To explain why some children were more successful. 29.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To compare two different paths to a life of purpose. B.To discuss the good effects of delayed gratification. C.To encourage us to delay pleasure for a bigger purpose. D.To explain the meanings of pleasure and true happiness. 根据“the other is the more difficult path of delaying pleasure for a bigger purpose” 以及 “People who learn how to manage their needs to be satisfied in the moment thrive more in their careers, relationships and health”可知,延迟满足的人会为更大目标耐心努力。故选A。 28. 根据“A well-known study... explains a lot about why it’s beneficial to delay gratification”可知,提及这项研究是为了证明推迟满足的价值。故选C。 29. 通读全文,尤其是最后一段“So, which path would you like to take?” C。 D If you’re thinking about what job you want in the future, it’s likely you’ve heard this one before: “Just do what you enjoy!” In today’s world, making money isn’t easy no matter what you do, so why not do something you truly enjoy? That may sound like a smart plan: You move somewhere with a low cost of living, and even if the thing you love doesn’t make much money, you can still live well. But in reality, things aren’t that simple. Passion (热情) alone can’t always carry you through. Doing the job you love can bring you great feelings when life is easy and you are in a cheerful state. However, things can go wrong when you feel tired, feel lonely or get sick. Passion alone may not be enough. At those times, you may begin to ask yourself: “Is this really the right life for me?” Thinking about the job opportunities you passed by, you might even wonder if giving up that better job you could have had was a smart choice. I completely understand how that feels. As a writer, I truly enjoy my work. But there are days—like today—when it’s outside, I haven’t slept well, and all I want is to stay in bed. Still, even when I don’t feel like it, I still sit down and write. Why? Because passion isn’t the only thing that drives me. I also have a sense of purpose. I know that my writing helps people, and that keeps me going—even when passion fades. Actually, I have been through it many times—when I sit at my desk, staring (盯着) at the empty screen, feeling lost or tired. Writing doesn’t always feel fun. But because I have a purpose, I get through it every time. Over time, I’ve learned that passion makes you excited at first, but purpose helps you keep going when things get hard. If you know your work helps others, even in a small way, it feels more meaningful. To find your purpose, you need to try different things. Do different jobs, talk to new people, explore new places, and see what makes you feel happy and useful. You don’t need to know all the answers right now, but you do need to keep learning and keep exploring. One day, you may find the place where your passion and your purpose come together. And when that happens, I hope you build a life and a job that you truly enjoy. 30.You will most probably enjoy your work in the long run if you ________. A.move to a place with an affordable cost of living B.choose a job that makes you feel excited every day C.enjoy your work while knowing why it matters to you D.follow your heart without caring about others’ opinions 31.What does the word “fades” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean? A.Grows slowly. B.Becomes weaker. C.Moves quickly. D.Stays the same. 32.What do you know about passion and purpose from the passage? A.Purpose usually comes before passion in jobs. B.Purpose is the key for people to lead a rich life. C.People make a smart plan with purpose and passion. D.People need purpose more than passion at hard times. 33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To show how people can find their purpose in jobs. B.To explain why passion alone is not enough at work. C.To compare different ways of choosing jobs in modern times. D.To introduce the challenge of making good job choices in life. 根据“I’ve learned that passion makes you excited at first, but purpose helps you keep going when things get hard.”和“One day, you may find the place where your passion and your purpose come together. And when that happens, I hope you build a life and a job that you truly enjoy.” 根据“I know that my writing helps people, and that keeps me going—even when passion fades.” 根据“Over time, I’ve learned that passion makes you excited at first, but purpose helps you keep going when things get hard.” 根据“Passion (热情) alone can’t always carry you through.”和“Passion alone may not be enough.” Boat life in Britain Zoe Bulsara’s neighbours are swans, and her mornings begin with misty sunrises over the water. Because of the high cost of housing in the big city, the 24-year-old made a decision to leave her home in Bristol and buy a narrowboat four months ago. She has been living on Britan’s canals (运河) ever since. “Not being tied to one place is a kind of freedom and I love nature,” she says. The popularity of living on Britain’s waterways has been growing. A recent survey by the Canal & River Trust showed that there were around 35,000 boats on the canals of England and Wales, a third more than two decades earlier. One of the main reasons is the extremely high cost of housing. You can buy a nice narrowboat for about £50,000. That’s only a small part of what an average flat in London costs. The change of working patterns also contributes to (促成) this trend. As more people work from home now. they have more freedom to choose where to live. During the Industrial Revolution, Britain had a canal network that was almost 6,400 kilometers long. But when railways were built, fewer people used the canals and a lot of canal routes were given up. Keeping a canal network that’s 250 years old costs a lot of money. Last year, the Canal & River Trust spent 40 million pounds on regular maintenance (维护). People who boat on the canals have to pay some of the cost. A license to use the water costs a few hundred pounds each year. This fee makes up about 11% of the Trust’s money. In April, the Trust said that by 2028, boats without a fixed place to stay would have to pay 25% more. There will probably be more price increases after that. However, life on a boat isn’t all smooth sailing. Washing clothes can be a troublesome task, especially during the cold winter months. Besides, if you don’t have a fixed place to dock (停泊) your boat, having to find a new docking place every two weeks can be a real headache. Even so, the timeless charm of the waterways continues to attract many people. Like Zoe’s “magical” boat life, this lifestyle is worth trying despite challenges. 34.Why did Zoe leave her home in Bristol and buy a narrowboat? 35.How does the change of working patterns contribute to the trend to live on the waterways? 36.How much did the Canal & River trust spend on regular maintenance of the canals last year? 37.Do you think it’s a good idea to live on the boat? 13.A.feared B.tried C.considered D.regretted 14.A.experience B.service C.experiment D.treatment 15.A.use B.believe C.understand D.question 16.A.real B.different C.serious D.strong 17.A.difficulty B.success C.loneliness D.joy 18.A.asking B.repeating C.accepting D.improving 19.A.unknown B.unshown C.unchecked D.unexpected 20.A.confuse B.benefit C.trouble D.satisfy 三、阅读理解(每题2分,共26分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。 A The Most Popular Cartoons and TV Series for Children A If History Is a Group of Meows This series introduces Chinese history in a cute and exciting way. D If you’re thinking about what job you want in the future, it’s likely you’ve heard this one before: “Just do what you enjoy!” In today’s world, making money isn’t easy no matter what you do, so why not do something you truly enjoy? Boat life in Britain Zoe Bulsara’s neighbours are swans, and her mornings begin with misty sunrises over the water. Why or why not?
