It is important to understand it and learn what to do with it if you want to adapt to your new home’s culture successfully.
Generally speaking, there are four stages (阶段) that you will experience after you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually called the “excitement” stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture. Everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it won’t be long before you move from the “excitement” stage to the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to worries. It seems that everything is difficult. The language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping have become a difficult problem. It is at this “stress” stage that you may feel worried and homesick: This is the stage which is called “culture shock”.
However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to get through it, you will move to the “recovery (恢复) stage”. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home and to like some ways of the new culture better.

“This is exactly what I’ve been looking for — a copy of Journey to the West with pictures of Guanyin in it.”
Liao checked the student’s library card. “Have a good read, my dear,” she said. Seeing the boy rush back to a plastic chair in the corner of the room, holding the book like a box of treasure, Liao let out a broad smile.
“Children need a stable (稳定的) environment to develop reading skills,” she said. The library, covering less than 20 square meters and holding about 5,000 books, provides such an environment for the children of migrant workers (农民工) in Tongzhou, Beijing.
As a volunteer librarian, Liao helps children borrow and return books and organize the shelves. She also enjoys chatting with the students about their choices.
The library is part of the Weilan Library project, which works to set up libraries for migrant children. By late October, the project had 82 branches in different cities, helping more than 80,000young readers.
Zuo Qiao, director of the Weilan Library project, works hard on it. “Three rules are important in any one of our libraries: a large number of high-quality children’s books; consistent (连贯的) opening hours; and helping kids make their own choice of books to borrow and read,” he said.
About five years ago, Zuo found that many schools for migrant children had a dust-covered room with books, shelves, desks and chairs all over the place. The room was once a library donated by a charity group, he added.
“Many good-hearted people donated books and set up libraries at these schools, but they often ended up being forgotten and left in darkness in the long run,” he said.
He believed that every child should have the right to go to libraries, so he and his friends started the Weilan Library project.

Tracking (跟踪) some 65,000 miles and 45 countries, Christopher Schacht’s international bestseller Around the World on 50 Bucks (元) was translated into English by Janet Gesme.
As a translator, musician and mother of two, Janet Gesme speaks English, German, Russian, and Spanish. She fully understands the Christopher’s intentions (意图) and has managed to express each idea in his voice. We recently had the chance to interview Gesme, who provided us with some fantastic insights.
How does a U.S./English-speaking reader differ from a European/German-speaking one?
The German speaking readers are usually more patient and willing to read longer texts for a better understanding of an idea.
But that was not the case with Christopher Schacht’s book. He writes quick, exciting, short stories that make you laugh and make your eyes pop out in surprise. There was no need to change the style: his writing is exactly what an English-speaking reader loves.
What were the challenges (挑战) or joys of translating Around the World on 50 Bucks?
First, we were on a short timeline, so I needed to translate the whole book in three months. That meant a lot of late nights. The second challenge was Christopher’s sense of humor. Some of his humor is based on German culture that are very hard to translate.
This leads into the joys as well. Christopher and I communicated online weekly while translating the book. We brainstormed together on how to find English equivalents (对应词) for the German style of humor.
One of the themes of this book is communicating through barriers (障碍). From your point of view, how would someone interested in traveling best learn a new language in a strange place?
Christopher has great tips for this in the book: Use apps and dictionaries to learn as many words ahead of time as possible. When traveling, you often have to wait a lot. This is the perfect time to learn. Then talk to people. You will make mistakes and it will be hard, but it is helpful and you’ll gain a lot.

Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of worries. This feeling is often called “culture shock (冲击)”.
Culture shock is common. Everyone in a new situation will go through it. Continue to be brave! And getting through culture shock will be a piece of cake.

“I found it! I found it!” a second grader shouted excitedly as he rushed to Ms. Liao, the librarian.
On the window of a library, there is a postcard written by a third grader. It reads, “Your library is small, for us it is a grand hall of knowledge and teaches us so much.”
