B Australian scientists have come up with a clever way to study hard-to-reach areas of the sea floor: they tied cameras to sea lions. The resulting videos have given scientists new information about the sea lions, and also about the sea floor. Australian sea lions are endangered. Their numbers have dropped by over 60% in the last 40 years. Scientists wanted to learn more about how sea lions use different areas of the sea floor to gather food. But studying the sea floor is difficult. Underwater robots are expensive, they often move slowly, and they can't go everywhere. So scientists at the University of Adelaide came up with a different plan — tying cameras to sea lions. The sea lions could cover large areas of the ocean floor quickly, and dive deeply to places humans can't reach. The researchers used eight healthy females from two different groups of sea lions. They chose females because they would soon return to land to feed their young pups. That meant the scientists could easily get the cameras back. The scientists put the sea lions to sleep and temporarily attached a light-weight camera and GPS tracker to the animals. The team worked with animal experts to make sure the sea lions were treated well. Before long, the sea lions woke up 试卷第 5页,共 13页 and headed out to sea. Over the next few days, the eight sea lions traveled 348, 560 kilometers underwater, diving as deep as 110 meters below the surface. In all, the animals collected 89 hours of video, letting the researchers see exactly what the animals saw. The results were exciting. The videos showed the sea lions hunting for food and proved that mother sea lions teach their pups how to hunt. The videos recorded the sea floor in places that had never been seen before. The researchers were able to identify six different types of sea floor environments, such as areas with lots of marine plants, or with bare sand. The videos gave the team a good idea of the kinds of plants and animals living in each of those environments. 24.What does the underlined word “endangered” probably mean? A. Rare and valuable. B. In need of training. C. Common and popular. D. In face of disappearing. 25.Why were sea lions chosen for studying the sea floor? A. Because underwater robots are less developed. B. Because sea lions are easy to catch and release. C. Because sea lions can reach where humans can’t. D. Because sea lions have a strong sense of direction. 26.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. Scientists observed sea lions’ hunting behavior. B. Scientists prepared the sea lions for the journey. C. The sea lions were chosen based on their age and sex. D. Sea lions were carefully monitored during the research. 27.What is probably the best title for the passage? A. The Diet of Australian Sea Lions B. Underwater Journeys of Sea Lions C. Sea Lions Help to Map Ocean Floor D. The Importance of Protecting Sea Lions C Art is a universal language. Music is a universal language. Love is a universal language. Now, it’s the turn of sand to be mentioned in such terms. In her work, sand artist Kseniya Simonova mixes art, music and love to create her own medium which can be understood and appreciated by 试卷第 6页,共 13页 everyone. Simonova said she fell in love with sand art by accident. “I never thought I could perform; I was always a classical artist,” shared Simonova. “I just started it as a hobby and I never thought it would become what it is now.” In 2009, Simonova won the “Ukraine’s Got Talent” TV contest. Since then her fame has increased rapidly, and she has become a real sensation. The art Simonova creates is amazing; however, the medium she uses is quite common. It is ordinary river sand. “In sand art, it is an idea and its visualization that is important. What I do is create a tale in my mind. The sand is a very convenient medium that is very flexible and responds to speed well. It can show what is going on in my head.” The images created by the artist last only for a few seconds. However, Simonova is not worried by the momentary nature of sand art. “I know that my creations live only for a while, but I believe that to be completely normal because art reflects life. We live every moment of our life, and we can’t go back and do it again. The same is the case with what I do,” Simonova concluded. Sand art helps the artist to see the world in a new way, painting ever-changing life in every grain of sand. 28. How does Simonova feel about her achievements in sand art? A. Confident. B. Amused. C. Confused. D. Surprised. 29.What is important in sand art performance according to Simonova? A. The medium. B. The story. C. The theatre. D. The audience’s response. 30.What does Simonova say about the momentary nature of sand art? A. It mirrors our life. B. It is a kind of regret. C. It encourages repetition. D. It alarms many sand artists. 31.What can be the best title for the text? A. Love is a universal language B. Sand art: a new form of performance C. Kseniya Simonova: painting the world with sand D. Sand artists: impressing the world with awesome work 试卷第 7页,共 13页 D Using LED lighting on the underside of surfboards could prevent great white shark attacks, new research suggests. According to an Australian-led study, underside lighting disrupted the ability of great whites to see silhouettes (轮廓像) against the sunlight above, reducing the rates at which the sharks followed and attacked the artificial prey (猎物). The study’s lead author, Dr Laura Ryan of Macquarie University, said the animal has a far lower visual acuity — the ability to see shapes and details — than humans. Her work has suggested that young great white sharks are unlikely to be able to clearly tell seals apart from swimmers or people paddling surfboards. The team tested multiple light treatments: covering the underside of the decoys (诱饵) with weak, intermediate and bright LED lighting and strobe lighting, as well as horizontal and vertical strip lighting. After each tow with one of the light treatments, they immediately towed a control decoy seal without any underside lighting. As an extra experiment, they did paired tests where the unlit control dummy was towed 3 metres away from the illuminated (点亮) dummy. The unlit decoys were attacked or followed by sharks more than any of the illuminated decoys. The brightest light seemed to be most effective, with zero predator incidents seen when the decoy’s illumination was most radiant. Vertical strip lighting was less effective than the horizontal strips, possibly because it broke the silhouette into longer sections that could still be identified as a seal, says Ryan. The strobe lighting was less effective than continuous lighting, perhaps because the sharks could still see the silhouette of what they thought was prey between flashes. The team is testing a surfboard prototype with fitted lighting. “Surfers can be a little bit fussy with their surfboards,” Ryan said. “As a surfer, I want it to be usable.” But Ryan warns that the illumination deterrent hasn’t been tested on other species known to attack people, such as tiger sharks and bull sharks, which have different hunting strategies. 32. According to the study, what might cause sharks’ attack on humans? A.Colour blindness. B.Mistaken identity. C.Strong sunlight. D.Survival needs. 33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? 试卷第 8页,共 13页 A.The process of the experiment. B.The subjects of the experiment. C.The follow-up study of the experiment. D.The theoretical basis of the experiment. 34.What can be an implied way to prevent shark attacks on humans? A.Using vertical strip lighting. B.Covering a surfboard entirely in lights. C.Keeping the lights on the surfboards out. D.Lengthening the horizontal strip lighting. 35.What is Ryan’s attitude towards the research finding? A.Disapproving. B.Optimistic. C.Unclear. D.Cautious. 第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2. 5分,满分 12. 5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 How to Keep a Relationship Healthy and Strong Are you new to experiencing relationships?
