Teachers spread knowledge, ideas and truth. They 1 as engineers of the human soul. There is one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”. He is Tao Xingzhi. He is a wise man and devoted his whole life to education.
Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied abroad 2 educational methods. 3 Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as 4 educator, he did not blindly follow western education methods or theories. In fact, he changed the saying of “Education is life itself” to “Life is education”. For Tao, education is an active experience in real life instead of 5 and being told. He encouraged students to think independently and apply 6 they learned to their daily lives.
Besides developing education methods, Tao 7 tried his best to improve mass (大众) education. After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao 8 surprised to learn that in China more than 70% of the people in the city didn’t know how to read or write. 9 the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. Later, most of 10 became teachers at schools in the countryside. In January 1934, he started the “Little Teacher” movement in which young students were encouraged to teach 11 . They even taught those who were 12 than themselves. Under Tao’s guidance, over 18,000 “little teachers” were trained in Shanghai within 10 months. Moreover, he 13 a middle school in Chongqing and offered free education to poor children.
Maybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life. “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not 14 a leaf of grass.” For Tao Xingzhi, education was not just about learning about knowledge but about changing lives. His teachings and actions make him not just a teacher but also a wise man. His 15 will forever be remembered and celebrated.

A father saw his son crying in the room. He asked him about the reason. The young boy replied, “My rich classmates laughed at me. They said that my father is just a worker who lives only on the money from watering and feeding plants for people.”
The father was silent for a moment and said, “Come with me, son. Let's plant some flowers.” They walked to the garden, and the father took out some seeds and said, “Let's plant two flowers separately, but I use clean water from the lake, and you water yours with dirty water from the pond. We will see the results in the coming weeks.” The son had no idea what his father wanted to do, but he was interested and joined his father right away.
They cared for the flowers they planted and watched them grow. A few weeks later, they went to the garden. The father said, “Look at the two flowers and tell me your thoughts.” The boy said in surprise, “My flower looks healthier than yours. How is that possible?” The father smiled, “That's because dirty water from the pond doesn’t stop a plant from growing. Instead, it serves as organic fertilizer (有机肥料) to help the flower grow. Like dirty water, there are bad words from others in your life. Don't let them influence you. Instead, let them encourage you, and then you will be like the flower and bloom even in the dirt.”
After hearing these words, the boy felt confident and said, “Thank you, Dad. I won’t get upset about bad words anymore.”

Do you want to improve your physics and chemistry grades? Well, maybe you should first learn something about the struggles (斗争) of great scientists.
The American Psychological Association (美国心理学会) did a study. More than 400 students in New York City took part in it. The students were divided into three groups. Group 1 read a typical textbook that describes the achievements of great Scientists. Group 2 read about those scientists personal struggles. For example, as a Jew, Einstein escaped from Nazi Germany to avoid being killed. Group 3 read about the scientists’ intellectual (智力的) struggles, such as Marie Curie’s tailed experiments. These stories about struggles also told students how the scientists dealt with these problems.
The students took a science test before the study. After the six-week study, they took another. Scientists found those in Groups 2 and 3 improved their science grades. Students in Group 1 didn’t see a grade increase. Some of them even had lower grades after the study.
The study was led by Xiaodong Lin Siegler, a professor. According to Xiaodong, kids often think Einstein was born a genius. They believe they will never match him. Many of them fail to realize that any success requires a long journey. Along the way, there are many failures.
Students who read the struggle stories were more likely to say great scientists were like themselves. The “great minds” also had to solve problems to achieve success.
Xiaodong says today’s science textbooks fail to bring science to life. As a result, students hardly consider science as part of their everyday lives. Instead, they just see a long list of facts that they have to remember. Xiaodong thinks textbooks should include more stories about how great scientists had to struggle to succeed. And they should pay more attention to how these scientists responded to the problems they met along the way.
37. According to the passage, we can improve our physics and chemistry grades by ________.
A. reading the achievements of great scientists more carefully
B. listening more carefully to our physics and chemistry teachers

A. All of them were middle school students.
B. All of them went to schools in New York City.
C. All of them were interested in physics and chemistry.
D. All of them wanted to improve their physics and chemistry grades.
39. According to the last paragraph, Xiaodong thinks that ________.
A. Today’s science textbooks bring much science to life
B. Students should study harder to become a great scientist.
C. Students only need to remember a long list of facts.
D. It is meaningful to learn how scientists struggle to succeed.
