Dr. Mae Jemison is a physician and scientist who, in 1992, became the first black woman astronaut in space. Today, she works as a scientist and public speaker in America.
When Jemison was 3 years old, the family moved to Chicago to take advantage of better educational opportunities for her. Her parents were supportive of Jemison’s talents and abilities throughout her early school years. She spent a considerable amount of time in her school library reading about all aspects of science, especially astronomy.
After finishing her education at Cornell University Medical College, Jemison became a doctor of medicine in 1981. In 1985, she made a career change and decided to follow a dream she had nurtured for a long time. That October, she applied for NASA’s astronaut training program. When Jemison finally flew into space on September 12, 1992, with six other astronauts aboard the Endeavour on mission STS47, she became the first black woman in space.
Since her NASA days, Mae Jemison has become a public speaker who encourages STEM involvement and improvements in education for women and minorities. She is also a published author. In 2001, Jemison released a memoir (自传) titled Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments from My Life, about her early life and education, and training as an astronaut. She wrote the book specifically for teenagers, encouraging them to “learn from the lessons that you have in life”.
Jemison hasn’t limited herself to print media. In 1993, shortly after her mission on the Endeavour, she appeared as Lieutenant Palmer on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was the first time a real astronaut was on the show.
For all of her contributions, Jemison was accepted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. She is also a member of the National Medical Association Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

In between the speedboats and wooden fishing boats in a Hong Kong harbor, a different kind of boat sails. It looks ordinary, but as the three-meter-long new unmanned boat moves skillfully through the water, it consumes waste floating on the surface. Wasted plastic water bottles and juice boxes travel through a gap in the front of the boat and move up a belt.
Around 33 billion pounds of plastic trash enter the oceans every year, according to Oceana, an ocean conservation group. The sight of this ever-growing marine litter is truly concerning. “We have garbage trucks for the land. Why don’t we have something to clean the water?” said Sidhant Gupta, the co-founder of the marine-tech startup Clearbot, which developed the boat.
Clearbot is trying to change that with its autonomous boats. The boats can provide data by algorithms and analyze what items are being collected so that they can help people stop the flow of waste into waterways. And the boats don’t stop at collecting waste. There are many other “dull, dirty or dangerous” jobs that Clearbot’s boats are capable of. Equipped with sensors and tools, they can map the bottom of waterways, test water quality and collect samples.
Due to the massive need for marine clean-up, Clearbot is now focused on scaling up. Gupta hopes to have 20 boats put into use by next year, and 50 in operation within two years. “You should be able to see these in the harbors and think it’s so normal,” said Gupta. “We want it to be used widely.”
Some worry that too many boats will also cause pollution. But Gupta doesn’t think so. This boat has an impressive energy system. It has solar panels on top and an 8-hour battery, which can store the energy and enable it to operate without relying on traditional energy sources. “The fleet has the potential to protect the marine ecology and turn to pollution-free marine operations across a range of uses by replacing fossil fuel-powered boats,” said Gupta.
8.What drives Sidhant Gupta to develop this new boat?
A.Lack of transport boats. B.Needs of local fishermen.
C.Increase in marine litter. D.Waste of water resources.
9.What can we know about the performance of the boat?
A.It is multi-functional.
B.It works better underwater.
C.It requires manual operation.
D.It can avoid risky situations.
10.What does the underlined phrase “scaling up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Selling abroad. B.Functioning well.
C.Building harbors. D.Adding production.
11.What is the boat expected to do in marine operations?
A.To achieve zero carbon emissions.
B.To help conduct research on marine ecology.
C.To develop deep-sea fossil fuels.
D.To improve efficiency of marine operations.
D
During her lunch break, 28-year-old Li Qing visits a wellness center in Chongqing for a massage and moxibustion session, a traditional Chinese medicine therapy. “This is my secret weapon against work burnout,” she says. Her experience reflects a growing trend among young Chinese embracing wellness as a lifestyle.
At a herbal milk tea shop near a hospital, customers line up for drinks like dark plum milk. “We mix traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with modern flavors to appeal to younger consumers,” says Liao Changying from Chongqing Jiangbei Hospital of TCM. The hospital has seen a 30-35% rise in consultations as more young people embrace TCM.
Technology is also shaping wellness habits. Fitness enthusiast Liu Shiting checks yogurt labels using nutrition apps, while programmer Zhang Yang’s smartwatch reminds him to take breaks and practice Baduanjin, a traditional exercise. In early 2024, China’s wearable device shipments rose 36.2% year-on-year to 33.67 million units, showing a strong demand for health tracking.
From herbal teas to smartwatches, young people are blending TCM with modern technology. A Xinhuanet report shows that those aged 18 to 35 now make up 83.7% of China’s health consumers. Liu Junkang, a health industry expert, notes that young consumers seek highquality, personalized wellness solutions.
“Wellness is no longer just advice from elders but a measurable part of daily life,” says Liu. Young people are using data to customize their health routines, modernizing TCM, and prioritizing hands-on wellness experiences. This new generation is redefining preventive care — one herbal latte and smartwatch alert at a time.
12.What does Li Qing’s experience mainly illustrate?
A.The popularity of wellness centers in China.
B.The increasing work pressure among young people.
C.The rising awareness of health among the younger generation.
D.The effectiveness of a traditional therapy in reducing burnout.
13.What does the rise in smartwatch sales suggest?
A.People are spending more money on fashion accessories.
B.There is a growing demand for real-time health monitoring.
C.Traditional exercises are no longer popular.
D.Most people want to replace doctors with devices.
14.Why do young Chinese consumers prefer blending TCM with modern elements?
A.They want to make herbal medicine taste better.
B.The number of young people visiting TCM hospitals has increased.
C.Traditional Chinese medicine is too outdated.
D.They look for wellness solutions that fit their lifestyle.
15.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Wellness is now mainly driven by digital health tools.
B.Young people are using data to customize their health routines.
C.Hands-on wellness experiences are becoming more popular.
D.Young people are reshaping how they approach staying healthy.

47.阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I grew up in the small town of Willowbrook. During the week, I would go to school, but at the weekends, I played basketball. Playing with friends at the local park became our Saturday tradition. We met every Saturday morning, and though we started as a small group, our laughter and cheers soon drew curious glances from passersby. But not everyone was interested. Some kids rolled their eyes, complaining about us “taking up the court,” and a few even walked away when we invited them to play. Still, the idea of expanding our games stuck with me, and slowly, a few more faces started showing up.
As word spread, more students came. Not all of them stayed — some left after realizing they weren’t as good as they thought, and others got bored when the competition wasn’t serious enough. But for those who stayed, it became special. The park bench filled up, and the court buzzed with energy. We divided into teams, with naturals like Mark and newcomers like Alex.
Alex was a quiet, slightly overweight guy with a shy smile. Even though he hesitated a lot, he still wanted to play. I remember Mark snickering (窃笑), “You sure about this?” Alex nodded, with hesitation in his eyes.
The games grew more intense as more players joined, and the competition heated up. But what truly stood out was the sense of camaraderie (友爱) — at least, most of the time. Alex struggled, out of breath, missing passes. Once, after a rough play, he walked off, embarrassed. I thought he might quit. But he returned.
I paired him with a friend of mine who was more patient. His progress was slow — there were some improvements, then some setbacks. Despite this, Alex kept showing up over the following months. He wasn’t the best player, but he wasn’t the worst anymore.Paragraph one:
One Saturday, as the sun rose higher in the sky, the game reached its climax.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph two:
After that game, the atmosphere at the park was different.

【答案】
One Saturday, as the sun rose higher in the sky, the game reached its climax. In a tied match with seconds left, Alex got the ball — hesitation flickering in his eyes before determination took over. Instead of passing, he charged forward, face flushed but focused. As he jumped and shot, time froze. The ball arced clumsily, hit the rim, and then dropped through the net. The park erupted in cheers. Alex stood stunned, then smiled in pure, disbelieving joy. Alex’s practice partner rushed over, grinning from ear to ear, and bear-hugged him, shouting, “Nice one, man!” Even Mark, who had once doubted him, let out an approving whistle.
After that game, the atmosphere at the park was different. Alex had proved himself, his newfound confidence replacing his old hesitation. The teasing stopped, replaced by real respect as he became just another teammate. I felt proud, knowing it wasn’t just about basketball anymore — it was about how we supported each other. Our weekend games had become something bigger: a place where friendships grew, confidence was built, and even former self-doubters found a sense of belonging. Alex’s journey showed what perseverance and community could do. Walking home, I smiled, knowing that these games would keep bringing us together, Saturday after Saturday.
