A very determined man
Mr. Das began driving a truck twenty-five years ago, when he was twenty-eight years old. He was very glad to get the work, for jobs are hard to find in Bihar. Being an honest, intelligent and active man, Mr. Das rapidly gained a first-class reputation. For this reason, he was able to find work even in hard times, and every time he was paid, he put some of his money away.
Reading Comprehension
Eleven years later, Mr. Das had managed to save enough money to buy his own truck. Having achieved this, he turned his attention to a different problem.
It had annoyed him for years that he couldn't drive all the way to his house. The distance from the road to his house was not very great, but there was a mountain blocking the way. Tired of carrying things round the mountain on foot, he decided that he would have to tunnel a way through. He began working with a hammer and chisel fourteen years ago. Working on his own in the times when he was not earning a living as a driver, Mr. Das has succeeded in opening a road through the mountain.
Last week, he was able to drive his truck through the tunnel and park it outside his house for the first time.
'I had to leave my truck miles away, 'he said, 'so I decided to do something about it myself.'
