I once was a quick-tempered boy. If I mumbled (嘟哝), I got angry. When I got angry, I’d yell at anyone nearby, not caring who they were or what they were doing. Then they would make fun of me. Eventually, many people around me disliked me because of this. They started avoiding me. Even though I felt like I needed to improve myself, I didn’t know how.
My father was patient with me and one day he gave me a basket full of nails (钉子) and a hammer (铁锤). Every time I got angry, he advised me to avoid scolding (责骂) the people involved and hammer a nail into the wooden fence behind the house until I calmed down. The first day, I hammered about 50 nails into the fence. As the days passed, I learned to control my hurtful speech in front of those who made me angry. Only when I got angry should I go and hammer the nails immediately!
Eventually, before I could take the basket and hammer and go to the fence, my anger cooled and I started hammering nails into the fence less. In a few days, I no longer felt the need to hammer nails into the fence. I went to my father and told him the details. Although he was happy inside, he didn’t show it. He gave me a nail puller and asked me to pull out the nails I had hammered into the fence one by one. It took me a whole day to pull them all out. After pulling out all the nails, my father and I went to see the fence. My father showed me the scars where the nails had been pulled out from the fence and said, “When you get angry, you lose your mind and say things like this nail. Even if you apologize for speaking as if you were pulling out a nail, the wound left by those words is just as hard to heal as the scar from this nail.”
I too understood the concept well, changed, grew up to respect my village, and achieved many successes in life.

B. He apologized to the people he had hurt.

5. Why did the boy’s father give him nails and a hammer?
A. To help him control his anger.
B. To punish him for his bad behavior.
C. To teach him how to repair the fence.
D. To make him stronger by hammering nails.
6. How did the father react when the boy stopped hammering nails?
A. He apologized to the boy.
B. He showed his inner happiness.
C. He asked the boy to remove the nails.
D. He told the boy to repair the damaged fence.
7. Which best summarizes the main lesson of this story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Time heals all wounds.
C. Practice makes perfect.
D. What’s done cannot be undone.

The world has been changing very quickly since the introduction of generative (生成的) artificial intelligence (AI). Generative AI now helps write stories, create art and answer questions, and it can even copy people’s voices. It’s being used in schools, offices, music and movies. Even the Oscars (奥斯卡奖) are changing because of AI.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated (更新) its rules, saying films that use AI are now allowed to win awards. So even if a movie uses AI to help with writing, editing or voices, it can still win Hollywood’s biggest prize. The Academy explained that using AI will not help or hurt a film’s chances of getting nominated (被提名), although human creativity and input are still the things that matter most. “AI is just a tool,” said Academy president David Rubin. “What truly makes a film great is the human story behind it.”
The use of AI in film became a talking point after this year’s Oscars, when Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist. In the film, both Brody and his co-star Felicity Jones had to speak Hungarian, a very difficult language to pronounce. According to the film’s editor David Jancso, AI was used to perfect their speech. “They did a wonderful job, but we also wanted to perfect it so that even locals will not notice any difference.” Another Oscar-winning film, the musical Emilia Perez, used AI to improve the singing of the actors.
The use of AI is becoming more common in the film and music industries. But not everyone is happy about it. During the 2023 Hollywood strikes, many actors and writers spoke out about AI, saying they were worried it could take away their jobs. Some worried that studios might use it to write scripts instead of hiring real writers, and others feared their voices or faces could be copied by AI without their permission (许可). Industry experts suggest that while AI can assist in production, it cannot replace human creativity and emotional depth that audiences connect with.
8. What does the Academy say about AI in films?
A. AI films are unable to win Oscars.
B. All films will use AI in the near future.
C. AI doesn’t change a film’s chance to win.
D. AI is becoming more important than humans.
9. How does the author show the influence of AI on the film industry?
A. By giving examples of AI in films.
B. By presenting the history of AI.
C. By focusing on technical details.
D. By comparing AI with traditional tools.
10. Why were some Hollywood workers unhappy about AI?
A. It made their voices sound strange.
B. It completely changed Oscar rules.
C. It might make them lose their jobs.
D. It made movies win too many awards.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. AI in the Oscars: Rules & Influence
B. AI in Film-Making: Future & Possibilities
C. AI in the Film Industry: Creativity & Success
D. AI in Hollywood: Anxieties and Worries

Whether you check it on the way to work, during breaks or before bed, scrolling (滚屏) through social media has become a habit for many people.
But have you ever noticed how hard it is to stop? A new study looked at what happens inside our bodies when we use social media and when we suddenly stop. It found that social media doesn’t just attract our attention; it causes changes in our heart rate, sweat levels and stress responses.
Researchers from Durham University in the UK looked at Instagram to see how it changes our physical state in real time. For the study, they tested 54 Instagram users in three steps, each lasting 15 minutes. First, participants read a news article to measure their normal state. Then, they scrolled through Instagram. Finally, they had to stop using Instagram, but still received notifications(消息提醒) they couldn’t check.
During each step, the researchers looked at participants’ heart rates, sweat levels and stress. While participants scrolled, their heart rates slowed, meaning they were very focused. At the same time, sweat levels increased, showing excitement. But when participants had to stop scrolling, their heart rates increased, sweat levels rose even more, and they reported feeling anxious and stressed. These effects were even stronger when they were getting notifications they couldn’t check.
The effects were the same for everyone, not just heavy social media users. Niklas Ihssen, one of the study’s authors, explained that these effects suggest that Instagram pulls people into a state of deep engagement. And if that state is interrupted, the body reacts with more stress. These findings raise important questions about how social media affects us. If every short scrolling session brings pleasure followed by stress, people may go through this cycle many times a day without knowing it.
To break the cycle, small changes like turning off notifications, or only checking social media at certain times during the day, might help.
12. Which method did researchers use for the study?
A. Tracking users’ online activity habits.
B. Comparing Instagram with other apps.
C. Interviewing heavy social media users.
D. Testing participants in three 15-minute stages.
13. What changes did participants have when they stopped scrolling?
A. Slower heart rates and less sweat.
B. Faster heart rates and more sweat.
C. Lower stress and calmer breathing.
D. No heart rate change but more stress.
14. What does the underlined word “cycle” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The steps of the research.
B. Receiving and ignoring notifications.
C. Checking phones at work and before bed.
D. The process of feeling happy then stressed.
15. How does the author feel about social media’s effects?
A. Interested. B. Concerned.
C. Confused. D. Amazed.

Anne, a hardworking senior student, always took pride in doing her own work. One rainy afternoon while she was browsing at the local bookstore, a colorful magazine about climate change attracted her attention. As she was looking through the pages, one particular article stood out. Its writing was so clear, powerful and well-organized that she immediately decided to buy the magazine, thinking it might provide helpful references (参考) for future school projects.
When the deadline for her English essay arrived, Anne found herself completely unprepared. The topic of the composition “Environmental Protection Today” seemed quite difficult. After staring at a blank page for nearly an hour, her frustration (沮丧) growing with each passing minute, she suddenly remembered the magazine. With shaky hands, she pulled it out from her desk drawer and began copying several key paragraphs, changing just a few words here and there to make it seem different. “It’s just for reference.” she thought to herself nervously, but deep down she knew it was wrong.
The next week, Mrs. White held up Anne’s essay to the whole class. “This is an outstanding essay!” the teacher said excitedly. Anne’s heart beat fast as she heard words like “original thinking” and “excellent analysis”. Each compliment (赞美) made her feel more ashamed. Then came the worst part-Mrs. White wanted to send Anne’s essay in an important writing competition.
Anne imagined all the possibilities. The magazine wasn’t well-known, so perhaps no one would ever notice the copied sections. But even if no one knew it, could she keep this secret in her heart?
At lunch in the crowded cafeteria, her best friend Sarah rushed over and hugged her tightly. “I just heard about your essay! I’m so proud of you!” Sarah shouted excitedly, her eyes shining with true admiration. Seeing how Sarah believed in her writing talent so much, Anne suddenly realized that she wasn’t just lying to her teacher — she was lying to everyone who trusted her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
After a few minutes of silence, she whispered to Sarah, “I need to tell you something.”

C 9. A 10. C 11. A

根据第三段“The use of AI in film became a talking point after this year’s Oscars, when Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist. According to the film’s editor David Jancso, AI was used to perfect their speech. “They did a wonderful job, but we also wanted to perfect it so that even locals will not notice any difference.” Another Oscar-winning film, the musical Emilia Perez, used AI to improve the singing of the actors.

根据文章第一段中“Generative AI now helps write stories, create art and answer questions, and it can even copy people’s voices. It’s being used in schools, offices, music and movies. Even the Oscars (奥斯卡奖) are changing because of AI. (生成式人工智能现在可以帮助编写故事,创造艺术和回答问题,甚至可以复制人的声音。它被用在学校、办公室、音乐和电影中。就连奥斯卡奖也因为人工智能而发生了变化。)”以及第二段中“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its rules, saying films that use AI are now allowed to win awards.

A. Interested. B. Concerned.
C. Confused. D. Amazed.
D 13. B 14. D 15. B

Build a Greener Campus
Dear students,
To protect our environment and promote sustainable development, our school English newspaper calls on everyone to join in building a greener campus.
We can take several practical steps. First, conserve energy by turning off lights, air conditioners, and taps when they are not in use. Second, reduce waste by recycling paper, plastic bottles, and metal cans. Additionally, use reusable bags and water bottles instead of throwaway ones. Lastly, let’s add more plants to our campus by planting trees and taking care of the flowers and grass around us.
Small actions lead to big changes. Let’s join hands to create a greener and more eco-friendly campus!

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
After a few minutes of silence, she whispered to Sarah, “I need to tell you something.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Sarah held Anne’s hand tightly and walked towards Mrs. White’s office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After a few minutes of silence, she whispered to Sarah, “I need to tell you something.” Her voice trembled as she admitted copying parts of the essay, her cheeks turning red with shame. Sarah’s eyes widened in surprise at first, but then she gave Anne’s shoulder a comforting pat. “It takes courage to admit mistakes,” Sarah said firmly. “Let’s go to tell Mrs. White together.” With Sarah’s support, Anne carefully wrote a sincere apology letter, explaining exactly what she had done wrong and promising to make up for it with her own hard work.
Sarah held Anne’s hand tightly as they walked towards Mrs. White’s office. Anne’s palms were sweaty and her heart raced, but she kept walking. When Mrs. White read the letter, her serious expression gradually softened. “I appreciate your honesty,” she said finally. “Everyone makes mistakes, but only brave people correct them.” That evening, Anne stayed up late rewriting her essay completely on her own. Though the new version wasn’t as perfect as the copied one, it was truly hers. As she handed it in the next day, Anne realized that being honest might be difficult, but it always leaves you feeling lighter and prouder.
