Teaching and learning important points: 1) Reading comprehension of the text content; 2) Thinking quality improvement. Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Reading comprehension of the text content; 2) Thinking quality improvement. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Leading in (Opening Page) and introduction Activity 1 Leading-in 1. Lead in the teaching topic by looking at the picture and discuss the following questions. Suggested answers: 1) What might the picture be about? Just as we view robots as toys now, in the future robots may view us as toys vice versa. 2) What are your predictions about the future? In the future, high tech will become cheaper and more common throughout the world, even in countries which are poor and underdeveloped, and it will result in great changes to their societies. 3) What might be some of the advantages and disadvantages of life in the future? A big advantage will be an increased ability to work from home for most companies around the world. A big disadvantage will be that with everyone connected online 24/7, the privacy and ability to be alone will be taken away from many people. 2. Talk about the saying/quote: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”—Peter Drucker English meaning: It means that we should make our own futures. We do not have to guess what tomorrow will bring, nor do we have to accept whatever fate gives us we can decide what kind of life we will lead in the future by taking action in the present. Chinese meaning: 预测未来的最好方法就是创造它。——彼得·德鲁克 Activity 2 Introduction 1. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit at the bottom of the opening page and make the students have a general idea of what they are going to learn in this unit. (Get the students to read the comprehensive learning objectives at the bottom of the page.) 2. Introduce the learning objectives of this period. Step 2 Pre-reading Activity 3 Leading in and discussion 1. Leading in the teaching topic by reading about the title and watching a short video of a smart home. 2. Discuss the following questions. 1) What does it mean when we say that something such as a phone is “smart”? To say that something is smart means that it can make decisions on its own without a human telling it what to do, and that it can also learn how to do things itself. 2) What do you think a “smart” house can do that other houses cannot? I would except that a smart house could control room temperature and lights, for example. 3) What smart appliances are being used in your home? How do they make your life easier? What other smart appliances do you want to use in your home? Why? Step 3 While-reading Activity 4 Reading comprehension 1. Skim the text and answer these questions. 1) What is the type of this text? And what’s the purpose of the text? It is a popular science exposition (科普说明文). The purpose of the text is to introduce and get people excited about the idea of smart homes. 2) Who is the intended audience of the text? Or who is the text intended for? Why? Home owners. Because the text is to introduce the idea of smart homes. 2. Talk about how to identify purpose and audience of a text. The types of phrases used in a passage help identify its purpose. For example, the phrase in my opinion tells us that the passage is likely meant to persuade. And a text that uses imperatives is likely meant to instruct. A passage’s content helps identify its audience. For example, a passage that gives tips on looking after pets would have pets owners as its audience. 3. Work together to analyse the structure of the text. Title: Smart homes to make life easier (what, how, why) Introduction: Paragraph 1 These smart homes will keep us secure, save our energy, and provide more comfortable environment to live in. Body (Examples): Paragraph 2 Intelligent controls. Paragraph 3 Regular health checks. Paragraph 4 No more disasters. Conclusion: Paragraph 5 This smart technology is not a fantasy. 4. Read the passage again and find out the answers to these questions and fill in the table on P15 of the text book. Questions and answers to the questions: 1) Why does the writer start Paragraph 1 with two questions? To arouse the readers’ attention and to introduce the topic. 2) What are the advantages of smart homes mentioned in this paragraph? To keep us secure, save our energy, and provide more comfortable environment to live in. 3) How do we control our home today? How will we control our home in the future? Today, we have to use switches for our lights, knobs for our appliances, and remote controls for our TVs and air conditioners. In the future, we will be using advanced technology every day for automatic control of just about everything in our home. 4) How does the intelligent or automatic control function? Go into an energy-efficient mode automatically. Response according to your routine and preferences. Response to voice commands. 5) How does the writer develop Paragraph 2? By making comparison. 6) What will smart homes do to monitor your health? Please give some examples. Smart beds will record how well you sleep every night and also check your body weight. For example, smart toilets will be keeping constant track of your health. 7) Why does Paragraph 3 start with “In addition”? How does the writer develop this paragraph? To follow the previous paragraph to introduce more about the topic. By giving examples. 8) How do the smart homes make sure that no more disasters happen in your home? Detect problems with devices in the home, like a water pipe and the electrical wiring. Provide the relevant information. 9) What does the writer want to convey by describing how smart homes prevent serious damages from accidents? How does the writer develop Paragraph 4? The writer wants to convey the idea that smart home will keep us secure. By giving examples. 10) Why does the author mention that smart home is not a fantasy? What’s the author’s attitude towards smart homes? Because many of new innovations are already available and being used in some homes. In this sense, the home of tomorrow is already the home of today. Positive. Filling in the table. In the future, what will smart homes do about…? doors lock the door for us when we are away dinners prepare dinner for us TVs, computers switch off TVs and computers when we forget beds record how well we sleep every night, check our body weight, send a warning to our phones when we have sleep or weight problems, and give us suggestions on a healthier diet and how to sleep better water pipes, electrical wires detect if there is a problem and provide us with the relevant information toilets keep constant track of our health and warn us early on if there is something wrong lights, favourite music, or TV programmes come on the instant we enter the door Step 4 Post-reading Activity 5 Thinking, discussion and text reconstruction 1. Thinking about and discuss the following questions. 1) In what way is the home of tomorrow already the home of today? Many of the new innovations are already used in some homes today. This is true especially of automatic controls for things such as lights and air conditioners. 2) What might be some of the disadvantages of smart homes? (Open question) One disadvantage is that if there is a problem with the system, you may find yourself locked out of the house, or unable to turn your TV off or on. Security is another big concern, as strangers may be able to hack into the system to collect information about your life and use that for evil purposes. 2. Guide the students to reconstruct the text by summarizing the main content and the structure of the text. Step 5 Evaluation and summary Activity 6 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your reading comprehension of the text content? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. How is your understanding of the text structure? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 3.
