By the end of this period, the students will have been able to:
1) Complete the vocabulary exercises in the textbook and workbook;
2) Practise using the words and expressions learned in the previous period in contexts and consolidate their usage;
3) Use the words and expressions to express their ideas—to discuss how people can achieve success.

1. Review some of the language items learned in the previous period briefly.
2. Introduce the learning objectives of this period.

Activity 2 Building up your vocabulary
1. Write down the word that matches each definition. Then find the sentences containing these words in the text. Check the answers and give some explanations if necessary.
Answers to the exercises: 1) boil; 2) botanical; 3) properties; 4) liquid; 5) substance
And then fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the above words.
Tu Youyou and her team first tried boiling sweet wormwood and used the liquid obtained, only to find it didn’t work since its medical properties were destroyed. It was not until she used a lower temperature that the substance named artemisinin, a botanical treatment for malaria, was successfully extracted.
2. Guess the meaning of the underlined words. Then fill in the blanks with words that have the same roots.

Learn about derivation and new language items:
Root words: A root as its name suggests, is a word or word part from which other words grow, usually through the addition of prefixes and suffixes.
Word formation (构词法) 在英语中,常见的构词法有派生合成与转化(derivation, compounding, combination, conversion)等。派生法(derivation) 是由词缀(前缀或后缀)和词根相结合构成单词的方法,了解和掌握重点派生词缀,能够提高词汇学习的效率。单词前加前缀,一般不改变词性,只引起意义上的变化。单词后加后缀,一般意义变化不大,只改变了词性。如:(dis)honest, (il)legal, (ir)regular, fool(ish), farm(er), visit(or)等。

e.g. He concluded his speech with these words, “I’d like to acknowledge all the help I have received from my friends.”

2) It struck him that the other Chinese men in the photo apparently did not care about what was happening to their fellow countrymen. 他突然意识到,照片中的其他中国人显然不关心同胞们的遭遇。
It+特殊动词(短语)+从句,句中it是形式主语,that或wh-引导的从句是真正的主语。这一类常见句型有:
It strikes/hits/occurs to sb that/wh-从句... 某人突然想起……;某人突然意识到……;
It makes no difference that/wh-从句... ……没有影响/没有关系/没有作用;
It remains to be seen that/wh-从句... ……还有待观察。
e.g. It struck/hit/occurred to me that it was not a challenge but a chance to do such a job.

3. Read the passage about Lu Xun. Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in the box. Check the answers and then answer the questions to understand the passage better.

Activity 3 Discussion
Work in pairs to discuss how people can achieve success, using words and expressions you have learnt in this unit.
Sample discussion:
A: In order to achieve success in life. I think it is crucial to work hard.
B: I agree, but I think it is vital to also work hard doing the right things.
A: What do you mean?
B: Well, some people apparently try to get ahead by being dishonest and lying. Even though they are working hard, what good will it do?
A: That’s right. And even more people are working hard with wrong objectives. They just want to obtain money or become famous.
B: But what is a good reason?
A: I think it is good to work to make the world a better place, or to help other people with difficulties.
B: I see what you mean.
