Teaching and Learning Design 选择性必修Book1 Unit2 Looking Into The Future 教学设计 Period 9 Teaching and learning contents: Video Time + Unit Revision Comprehensive teaching and learning objectives: By the end of this period, the students will have been able to: 1) Learn to predict what you may watch by reading questions or statements before watching; 2) Learn to take notes while watching comprehend the video about flight of the Robobee; 3) Review this unit by completing some exercises in workbook. Teaching and learning important points: 1) Learning to make predictions and taking notes while watching the video; 2) Viewing comprehension of the video about flight of the Robobee; 3) Reviewing this unit by completing some exercises in workbook. Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Learning to make predictions and taking notes while watching; 2) Viewing comprehension of the video about flight of the Robobee. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Review and writing evaluation Activity 1 Review Revise how to write a letter to oneself from the future. Activity 2 Writing evaluation and presentation 1. Work in pairs to evaluate each other’s writing, using the checklist. √ Does the letter include a greeting and closing? √ Does the letter include a description of the future career which is influenced by new technology? √ Does it explain the advantages and disadvantages of the career clearly? 2. Get the students to recommend a few interesting letters to share in the class. Step 2 Video Time: Flight of the RoboBee Activity 3 Pre-viewing 1. Lead in the topic by introducing what is RoboBee. RoboBees are small flying robots (drones) that are being developed at the Wyss Institute of Harvard University by a team headed by Robert wood. 2. Predict what you are going to see. Think and circle the correct word(s) for each sentence. Tips: Read questions or statements before watching a video. It’s helpful for us to guess what we may watch in the video. You can use the context information, background information and common knowledge. Activity 4 While-viewing 1. Watch the video for the first time to check your predictions and complete part of the quotes by Robert Wood. (Tips: Go through the sentences first and predict what words may be used in blanks. When taking notes, first write down the key words, and then add more information while viewing the video for the second time. ) Answers: 1) RoboBees are like bees in that they fly independently / together, but all work independently / together. 2) Robert Wood is an explorer / a roboticist. 3) In the future, RoboBees could help explorers / policemen and doctors / photographers. 4) All of the RoboBees have crashed / flown successfully. 5) Like bees, every RoboBee has a job to do / obeys a queen bee. 2. Watch the video again to complete the quotes by Robert Wood, take notes and the check the answers. Answers: 1) ... robotics is the next Internet. It’s the next big thing to impact our lives in areas from medicine to even things like space exploration. 2) We use nature to inspire the robots that we build. 3) ...they can be quite useful for applications where you wouldn’t want to put a human or an animal... 4) If you don’t fail, you don’t learn enough. 5) If you want to make something fly, a solution already exists in nature. 3. Watch the video once more to understand it better. Reconstruct the text by summarizing the main content of the video. Activity 5 Post-viewing Discuss these questions in groups and share the answers. Suggested answers: 1. What might be some advantages of having many small robots that work together rather than one large robot? A large robot often takes up too much space and has difficulty in moving. Small robots working together can easily enter a small space and move around. 2. Specifically, how might RoboBees be used in a future application? They might be useful in rescue after a disaster. For example, if a building was blown down in a storm, they could fly into the wreckage and check for survivors. 3. What other kinds of robots can be created from nature (e.g., a robotic lion or snake)? How might these robots be used? A robotic spider could be useful as it could carry things across difficult uneven surface where wheeled vehicles can’t go. Step 3 Unit Revision Activity 6 Exercise in workbook and reference book 1. Check the answers to the exercises in workbook and give some explanation. Mainly focus on vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension exercises. 2. Check the answers to the exercises in reference book to consolidate the new language items learned in this unit and improve the development of the students’ comprehensive language abilities. Step 4 Summary and evaluation Activity 7 Summary Summarize the main contents and of this period briefly such as how to make predictions and take notes. Activity 8 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on and evaluate their learning of this period by answering the following questions. 1. How is your viewing comprehension? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. What will you do to consolidate what you have learned in this unit? Homework: 1. Complete the mind map of this unit to summarize and consolidate what has been learned in this unit. 2. Revise this unit and complete the exercises in RB. 3.
