For only twenty yuan, Fang Weijing can buy her lunch in a community canteen (食堂) in Hangzhou. She has a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice—all are very healthy. “The dishes have a home-cooked taste,” said Fang.
Community canteens have become more and more popular in China recently. They were made for the old people at first. It can be difficult for some old people to cook on their own, so the canteens provide help. They can have lunch and dinner within a 10-minute walk, or community workers can bring the dishes to them. Zhang Suxia, a worker in a community canteen in Hangzhou, said that the cook made special meals for the old. The food is soft and has less oil.
Now, more young people prefer eating in community canteens. For those who don’t want to order takeout meals or eat at restaurants, the canteens provide them with healthier and cheaper dishes.
This also encourages community canteens to think of new ways to provide food and make things easier for people. A canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community brings out buffet-style (自助式的) dishes. The dishes are sold at 2.48 yuan per 100g. The price is lower than that of restaurants close by.

Sweden’s programme of producing energy from rubbish is so successful, but its success has also produced a surprising problem: There is simply not enough rubbish in this country. It has been reported that only a little of their rubbish goes into landfills (垃圾填埋场). The rest is recycled or more recently being reused as fuel (燃料) in their waste-to-energy factories that are able to deal with lots of rubbish every year. And this situation has made Sweden face the serious and special problem mentioned above.
Sweden has begun buying much waste every year from other countries. Some countries depend heavily on landfills. In the United States where tons of rubbish was produced in the past, only about a small percent was recycled. As a result, more than half of their waste ended up in landfills.
Sweden is now paid by Norway to take its waste away. Sweden not only gets money from other countries but also changes the waste into energy in Sweden, which provides electricity and heating for so many homes. It’s a win-win situation. Clever!
Sweden is leading the way in waste management, but it is one of few. Most countries’ technology in dealing with waste needs improving. We live in a world that is full of rubbish like plastic bags and beer bottles. Sweden’s waste management offers a look into the future where countries can make money from their rubbish-and not just put it in the ocean or put it in landfills.

After John and Bobby finished their college, they joined a wholesale (批发的) company together in the same year. They both worked very hard. However, several years later, the boss chose Bobby to be the manager, but John was still a worker.
John couldn’t understand it and wanted to resign (辞职). He wrote a resignation to the boss and complained that the boss didn't know who worked harder and better.
The boss knew that John had worked very hard over the years. He thought for a moment and said, “Thank you for your criticism (批评), but I hope you can do one more thing for me before you leave. Perhaps you will change your mind and take back your resignation.”
John agreed. The boss asked him to find anyone selling watermelons at the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked for the price, but John didn’t know. So he went back to the market to ask and returned to tell the boss that it was 1.2 dollars per kilo.
Then the boss called Bobby to come to his office and asked him to do the same thing. Bobby went, returned and said to the boss, “Only one person sells watermelons, 1.2 dollars per kilo. But if you buy more than 10 kilos, it is 1 dollar per kilo. He has 340 watermelons and each one weighs about 2 kilos.
