Choose the best answer. (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
In the 1700s in Turkey, it was quite popular for people in love to secretly send each basket full of strange things. There were lots of different things in these baskets, such as flowers, stones, and even feathers. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning and by working out the secret meaning in each thing, the person who received the basket could know the true feelings of the giver.
This idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly passed to Germany, France, and Britain. However, over time, only sending flowers kept popular.
A bunch of flowers told young ladies about the feeling in the hearts of young men. Each different flower had a different meaning. For example, the flower from an orange tree meant, “You are beautiful and pure.” Pink carnations meant, “My love to you is strong and great.”
Many flower dictionaries were made to help young people in love understand the meaning of flowers they received.
By the 1880s, using flowers to send message had fallen out of fashion, and the more direct (直接的) way sending love letters began. Today, flowers are still considered a lovely gift, but the meaning for each kind of flower has been lost.

The Wright Brothers
Orville and Wilbur Wright were famous American brothers. They owned a bicycle shop in Ohio. They loved bicycles. But they also loved the idea of flying. In 1896, they began to experiment, or try new ideas, with flight.
First, they started by testing kites. Then, they worked on gliders, which are planes without motors (马达). These experiments showed them how an airplane should ___37___. In December 1903, the Wright Brothers were ready to test the Flyer. The plane lifted about ten feet off the ground. It flew over the sand for a short time. Then, it landed back on the ground. The Flyer only traveled about 120 feet. ___40___, it had flown! The brothers continued to work on their plane. After a while, it could stay in the air for over one hour.
Other ___41___ followed the work of the Wright brothers. They looked for ways to improve airplanes. They helped planes fly faster and longer. 根据短文内容回答下列问题。
Dear readers,
I know that Abraham Lincoln(阿伯拉罕·林肯)was the tallest American President. He stood six feet four inches tall. I also know that he was the first President in the White House to wear a beard(胡须)and that he was the first one to appear on a coin. Now, after reading Laugh with Lincoln in this month’s magazine. I’ve also learned that this president may have had the strongest funny bone!
In all the pictures of Lincoln I’ve seen, his face always looked very serious. In fact, he had many important responsibilities, and he had to make many hard decisions. But people have studied his life say that Lincoln often laughed and joked.
He used humour(幽默)to help people think about the thing in a new and better way. He understood that sharing laughter could help us connect and become friends. I am sure his sense of humour was one of the reasons that made him a great president—and a loving father and husband I’m glad that I know a little more about the sixteenth president of the United States. And I think I’ll find a good joke to tell on Presidents’ Day—If you know a funny one, I hope you’ll send it to me!
Happy ending!
Your friend,
Christine

The Flyer only traveled about 120 feet. ___40___, it had flown! The brothers continued to work on their plane. After a while, it could stay in the air for over one hour.

根据短文内容回答下列问题。
Dear readers
Your friend,
Christine
