Unit 10 I’ve had this bike for three years.Section A (2a-2d)
Teaching Objectives
Students can understand the listening content about Amy’s family sorting items (giving away/keeping), and extract key information like item names, possession durations.
Students are able to use past - related time expressions (e.g., “for + 时间段”, “since + 过去时间”) to talk about item possession in conversations.
Students can role - play dialogues about giving away or keeping items, expressing reasons and making appropriate responses.
Teaching Key Points & Difficulties
Key Points
Master the listening skills to identify items for giving away/keeping and fill in information about item possession.
Use structures like “I’ve had... for/since...” and reason - giving patterns (e.g., “Because I’ve had it since...”) in conversations.
Difficulties
Accurately catching and using past - related time expressions in listening and speaking.
Creating natural conversations with proper reasons for keeping or giving away items.
Teaching Methods
Task - based Language Teaching
Role - playing
Cooperative Learning
Teaching Aids
Multimedia equipment, listening audio materials, item cards (book, magazine, toy bear, etc.)
Teaching Procedure
I. Warm - up (5 mins)
Daily Talk: Ask students “Do you have old things at home? What are they? What will you do with them, keep or give away? ” Let several students share.
Vocabulary Revision: Show pictures of items in 2a (book, magazine, toy bear, etc.), ask students to say the words, and write them on the blackboard.
II. Listening Practice (15 mins)
2a & 2b Tasks
Pre - listening:
Present the 2a task: Tell students they’ll listen to Amy’s family sorting items, and need to check (√) things to give away and circle things to keep.
Let students predict based on the items, e.g., “Toys are often hard to give away. Do you think Amy will keep toy bear? ”
While - listening:
First play the audio for 2a. Students do the checking and circling. Then check answers by asking volunteers to share and explain briefly.
Second play the audio for 2b. Students fill in the blanks. Pause the audio if necessary to help students catch key info like “favorite toy”, “since she was a...”, “more than... years”.
Check 2b answers together, focusing on past - time expressions, e.g., explain “for three years” “since she was a baby” structure.
Post - listening:
Ask students to retell the key info from listening, e.g., “Amy has had her favorite... for three years. Her mom has had the old bread maker for... ”
Discuss in pairs: “Why do you think Amy keeps some items? What do these items mean to her? ”
III. Speaking Practice (15 mins)
2c & 2d Tasks
2c - Controlled Practice:
Show the 2c sample conversation. Analyze the structure: “A asks about giving away items → B wants to keep one → A asks reason → B gives a reason with past - time expression”.
Students practice the sample dialogue in pairs, paying attention to pronunciation and intonation, especially “since I was a baby”.
Have several pairs perform the sample dialogue in front.
Then, students create new dialogues using other items from 2a, following the same structure. Walk around to help.
2d - Role - play:
Introduce the 2d context: Amy donates items to Sunshine Home for Children. Let students read the dialogue first.
Explain key phrases: “a couple of months”, “check out”, “have had... since...”.
Students practice the 2d dialogue in pairs, trying to add emotions, like Amy’s willingness to donate.
Invite two or three pairs to role - play in front, and give feedback on language use and performance.
IV. Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary:
Recap key points: items classification (give away/keep), past - time expressions in listening and speaking, how to make and respond to requests about keeping items.
Ask a student to summarize the lesson briefly.
Homework:
Write a short dialogue (at least 6 lines) about giving away or keeping old items in their family, using past - time expressions.
Find one old item at home, and be ready to share its story in the next class, including how long they’ve had it and why it’s special.
