Teaching Procedure
I. Warm - up & Fairy Tale Talk (7 mins)
Daily Question
Ask students: “Which classic fairy tales do you know? (e.g., Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella) What happens in them? ”
Let 3 - 4 students share, e.g., “Cinderella goes to the ball with a fairy godmother’s help.”
Lead - in to 2a
Say: “Today we’ll read a play version of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ – a famous fairy tale. Let’s explore its plot and practice performing it.”
II. 2a & 2b Activities – Pre - reading & Story Exploration (12 mins)
2a Instruction & Activity
Show 2a fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty, etc.). Tell students: “Match them to what you know. Then, think: What’s similar in fairy tales? (e.g., good vs. evil, magic).”
Students match and discuss. Walk around to confirm, e.g., “Little Red Riding Hood meets a wolf in the forest.”
2b Instruction & Activity
Explain 2b: “Read the first paragraph of ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Predict how the story continues. Then read the rest to check.”
Students read, predict, then confirm. Walk around to ask: “What’s Hansel’s plan? Why does he drop stones?”.
III. 2c & 2d Activities – Scene Matching & Comprehension (18 mins)
2c Instruction & Activity
Show 2c descriptions (children get lost, wake up, etc.) and tell students: “Match each description to the correct scene in the play. Use the scene dialogues to help.”
Example: “A. The children get lost.” → Scene Seven (Gretel says “we’re really lost!”).
Students work individually, then pair - check. Walk around to guide, e.g., “Scene Two: ‘Get up, lazy children!’ → children wake up (B).”
Check answers:
A → Scene Seven
B → Scene Two
C → Scene Six
D → Scene One (Gretel hears stepmother’s plan)
E → Scene Three (Hansel drops stones)
F → Scene Four (no stones, use bread)
G → Scene One (stepmother plans to kill them)
2d Instruction & Activity
Explain 2d: “Answer questions about the play. Find details in the scenes, e.g., ‘Why does the wife tell her husband to leave the children? ’ ”
Students read and answer. Pair - share. Check answers:
Wife wants to leave children in the forest because the weather is dry, no food will grow → family will die.
Hansel goes outside to get stones in the moonlight.
Moonlight helps him see to drop stones (so they can find their way home).
First, they follow stones. Second, they try bread, but birds eat it.
They get lost the second time because birds ate the bread; no markers left.
IV. 2e Activity – Play Performance (13 mins)
Instruction
Explain 2e: “In groups of four, act out the play. Assign roles (Hansel, Gretel, stepmother, father, voice). Focus on dialogue delivery and expression.”
Example: Step mother should sound harsh; Hansel, clever.
Student Activity
Groups practice for 8 - 10 mins. Walk around to help with pronunciation, e.g., “‘Unless we do, we won’t find our way out.’ – stress ‘unless’.”
Invite 1 - 2 groups to perform. Praise good acting and accurate dialogue use.
