Unit 4 Why don’t you talk to your parents? Section A(4a - 4c) Teaching Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Master the usage of conjunctions “although”, “so that”, and “until” through Grammar Focus (distinguish their meanings and apply them correctly in sentences). Skillfully complete sentence - filling tasks with “although”, “so that”, “until” (4a). Give appropriate advice for different problems and evaluate advice quality (4b). Communicate to get and give advice for chosen problems, using target language (4c). Teaching Key Points & Difficulties Key Points Understand and use “although” (contrast), “so that” (purpose), “until” (time) correctly. Create practical advice for various problems. Conduct advice - seeking conversations in real - life scenarios. Difficulties Accurately choosing and using “although”, “so that”, “until” in complex sentences. Giving creative and reasonable advice, and evaluating its effectiveness. Teaching Methods Grammar Explanation & Practice Problem - Solving Discussion Role - play Communication Teaching Aids Textbook, blackboard, multimedia Teaching Procedure I. Warm - up & Grammar Review (7 mins) Daily Dialogue Invite two students to perform a short dialogue using previous lesson’s target language, e.g.: A: I had a fight with my sister. What should I do? B: Why don’t you talk to her so that you can say you’re sorry. Praise and highlight “so that” (purpose), leading into grammar focus. Grammar Focus Introduction Show Grammar Focus on the board. Read the sentences aloud: “What’s the matter? / What should I do? / Why don’t you forget about it? Although she’s wrong, it’s not a big deal.” “He should talk to his friend so that he can say he’s sorry.” “I did my homework until really late last night, so I didn’t get enough sleep.” Explain: although: introduces a contrast (opposite ideas), e.g., “Although it’s hard, I’ll try.” so that: shows purpose (to achieve something), e.g., “Study hard so that you can pass the exam.” until: means “up to the time when”, e.g., “Wait here until I come back.” II. 4a Activity – Conjunction Practice (10 mins) Instruction Present 4a tasks: fill in blanks with “although”, “so that”, or “until”. Remind students to understand sentence logic: contrast, purpose, or time. Student Activity Students complete 4a individually. Then, discuss in pairs: “Why did you choose ‘although’ here? How does ‘so that’ work in sentence 1?”. Check answers together: so that (purpose: tell her to get her to ask next time) until (time: wait “until” you make friends) until (time: wait “until” last minute to study) Although (contrast: even though he’s best friend, still tell him) Explain tricky sentences, e.g., “Although” can’t be used with “but” in English (correct: “Although he’s wrong, he doesn’t care.” not “Although he’s wrong, but he doesn’t care.”). III. 4b Activity – Advice Giving & Evaluation (12 mins) Instruction Show 4b problems: “I’m very shy.”, “My sister and I fight all the time.” etc. Tell students: “Write one piece of advice for each problem. Then, compare with your partner to decide if advice is good/bad.” Example: For “I’m very shy.”, advice could be “You should join a club so that you can make friends.” Student Activity Students write advice individually. Then, pair up to share and evaluate. Walk around to encourage, asking “Is this advice helpful? Why?”. Invite pairs to share, e.g.: Problem: “My sister spends all evening on the phone.” Advice: “You could talk to her so that she knows you need to chat too.” Evaluation: “Good, because communication helps solve fights.” Write some creative advice on the board, praising “Use of ‘so that’ to show purpose”. IV. 4c Activity – Problem & Advice Role - play (13 mins) Instruction Explain 4c: choose one problem from the list (or use your own), ask classmates for advice. Decide whose advice is best. Example dialogue: A: My best friend is more popular than me. What should I do? B: You could be friendlier to others so that you can make more friends. C: You should just be yourself. Student Activity Students choose problems (e.g., “Left homework at home”, “Parents always argue”). Walk around to form groups of 3 - 4, guiding them to use “although”, “so that”, “until” in conversations if possible. Groups perform role - plays. After each, the group decides “best advice” and explains why, e.g., “We think ‘talk to parents so that they know your feelings’ is best because it solves the problem directly.” Encourage using grammar from 4a, like “Although it’s scary, talk to them until they listen.” V.
