I. Warm - up & After - School Talk (7 mins)
Daily Survey
Show 2a activities: do homework, have after - school lessons, watch movies, use the Internet, hang out with friends, play sports. Ask students: “Check (✓) what you and your classmates usually do after school. Then, share with your desk - mate!”.
Students check and talk, e.g., “I do homework and have after - school lessons. My classmate often plays sports.”
Lead - in to Article
Say: “Many students have busy after - school lives. Today’s article talks about this problem. Let’s see what Cathy Taylor, Linda Miller, and Dr. Green think.”
II. 2b Activity – Article Reading & Question Answering (12 mins)
Instruction
Tell students: “Read the article ‘Maybe You Should Learn to Relax!’ quickly. Answer the two questions: 1. What’s the common problem for many students these days? 2. Who gives opinions about the problem?”.
Remind them to use “Guessing the Meaning” strategy: don’t worry about new words, use context.
Student Activity
Students read the article individually. Then, discuss in pairs. Walk around to help, asking “What’s the first question’s answer? Who are the three people?”.
Check answers:
Common problem: Many students have a busy after - school life with too many activities, leading to stress.
Opinions from: Cathy Taylor (a mother), Linda Miller (a mother), Dr. Green (a doctor).
III. 2c Activity – Vocabulary Guessing with Context (10 mins)
Instruction
Show 2c bold words in the article and meanings. Tell students: “Guess the meanings of bold words using the article’s context. Match them to the meanings.”
Bold words: keeps on happening, lasting for a short time, make something happen, usual or common, encourage, getting bigger, looking for differences.
Student Activity
Students work individually, then pair - check. Walk around to guide, e.g., “Look at ‘continues until the kids get older’ – which meaning fits ‘keeps on happening’?”.
Check answers:
keeps on happening → continues
lasting for only a short time → temporary
make something happen → cause
usual or common → typical
encourage someone to do something → push
getting better or bigger → development (Note: article uses “competition starts... and continues” – adjust based on actual text; may need to re - check. Correct match: “push” = encourage to work hard; “development” = getting bigger in context of child development)
looking for differences and similarities → comparing
Explain each word in context, e.g., “typical American family” = usual/common family.
IV. 2d Activity – Detailed Article Reading (10 mins)
Instruction
Tell students: “Read the article again carefully. Answer 2d questions about Cathy, Linda, and Dr. Green’s opinions.”
Questions:
Does Cathy Taylor think it’s important for kids to join after - school activities?
Does Linda Miller agree with Cathy? What’s her opinion?
Does Dr. Green agree with Cathy or Linda? What does she say?
Student Activity
Students read and answer. Pair - share answers. Walk around to confirm, e.g., “Cathy thinks activities are important for future success. Linda disagrees, saying kids should be kids.”
Check answers:
Yes. Cathy thinks these activities are important for her children’s future.
No. Linda thinks parents push kids too hard, and kids should have time to relax.
Dr. Green agrees with Linda. She says kids need time to relax and think for themselves; happy children are more important than successful ones.
V. 2e & 3a Activities – Discussion & Opinion - Sharing (11 mins)
2e Instruction & Activity

B: Yes. To relax, I should play sports or talk to friends.
Walk around to encourage using article opinions, e.g., “Like Dr. Green said, we need time to relax.”
