Donglan Bronze Drum Museum is China’s first private bronze drum museum. It is in Donglan, Guangxi province and its owner is Chen Yaoling.
Chen was a traditional Chinese medicine doctor and treated local farmers himself. One day in 1974, he treated a woman. The woman’s family offered him the gift of a cow to show thanks, but Chen refused, saying it was too expensive. Finally, the family gave him an old bronze drum. That was to be the first piece in Chen’s bronze drum collection. Since then, he has collected over 100 bronze drums.
Now, Chen has the largest personal collection of bronze drums belonging to the Zhuang people. The history of bronze drums in Guangxi dates back 2,000 years. At present, there are a little more than 2,000 bronze drums of the Zhuang people in museums around the world, but Donglan has the largest collection.
The bronze drum has been handed down from generation (代) to generation, but few people know its history. Chen has tried to let more people know the stories of each bronze drum he collected. Ten years ago, he borrowed about 5 million yuan to build a museum to popularize the Zhuang people’s cultural treasure. The museum now shows over 100 bronze drums in different halls according to what people used them for in the past.
Unlike other museums, visitors to Chen’s museum can touch the drums and even beat some of them. “Let people have a zero-distance contact (零距离的接触) with the bronze drums. It will arouse (引起) their interest and encourage more people to protect the drums,” Chen said.

Brenda Bongos was a happy, artistic girl. She had one big ambition — to play the drums in a band. But one big difficulty lay in her way. To be good enough to play in a band, Benda had to practice a lot, but she lived next-door to a lot of old people. Many of them were sick. She knew that the sound of beating drums would really get on their nerves. So, she had tried playing in the strangest places: a basement, a kitchen, and even in a shower. But there was always someone it would annoy.
One day, while watching a science documentary on TV, she heard that sound cannot travel in space, because there’s no air. At that moment, Brenda Bongos decided to become a sort of musical astronaut.
With the help of a lot of time, books and work, Brenda built a space bubble. This was a big glass ball connected to a machine which removed all the air inside. All that would be left inside was a drum kit (成套设备) and a chair. Brenda got into the space suit she had made, entered the bubble, turned on the machine, and played those drums like a wild child.
It wasn’t long before Brenda Bongos became very famous. Many people came to see her play in her space bubble. Shortly afterwards, she came out of the bubble and started giving concerts. Her fame spread so much that the government suggested that she be part of an unusual space journey. Finally, Brenda was a real musical astronaut, and had gone far beyond her first ambition of playing drums in a band.
Years later, when asked how she had achieved all this, she thought for a moment, and said: “If those old people next-door hadn’t mattered so much to me, I wouldn’t have found a solution, and none of this would have ever happened.”
6.Why did Brenda try to play in the strangest places?
A.Because she didn’t want others to hear her play.
