Shelley grew up in the city, where her dad always drove on smooth roads and her mom only stayed in expensive hotels. When her teacher, Ms. McKay, told the class about a four-day camping (野营) trip, she just wanted to find a way to get out of it.
But there was no way out, so she ended up on the trip. Shelley tried to carry her heavy bag. It felt like a mountain she didn’t want but had to take. When they finally got to the campsite, she was happy to put it down.
Ms. McKay said to the group, “Set up your tents (帐篷) and then walk around nearby, but don’t go too far.” Shelley thought, “That’s easy!?” Ms. McKay said, “For the first ten minutes, let’s walk without speaking and look at everything around us.” Shelley couldn’t believe it — could she stay quiet for ten whole minutes?
As she walked, she looked at the trees. She noticed the leaves (树叶) were not all the same green — some were dark green and some yellow-green. The trees were grey, brown or green. For the first time, Shelley felt amazed by nature and wanted to stay a bit longer.
After dinner, everyone sat around the campfire. Ms. McKay asked them to close their eyes and listen. Shelley heard leaves falling and birds singing. The sounds felt so nice and calming.
Over the next few days, Shelley enjoyed herself a lot among the trees. Ms. McKay talked about what was safe to eat in nature but asked them not to eat anything red. On the last night, they touched (触摸) nature — feeling the ground, the hard trees, and soft leaves.
When Shelley got back home, she felt different. She wanted to walk around outside. She noticed the flowers in gardens and the beauty of the park nearby. For the first time, Shelley truly saw the colors, heard the sounds, and noticed the different smells of her city. She felt happy for the world around her.

3. What can we know about Shelley when she came back from the trip?

Living on the ISS
Hello everyone, my name is Jessica Meir. I am an astronaut. I work on the International Space Station (国际空间站, 缩写为ISS) as a flight engineer. Today, I will tell you something about what life is like on the ISS.
The ISS has over 425 cubic meters (立方米) of living space. I work here with astronauts from the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and several other European countries. When we are on the ISS, we have to follow a detailed daily schedule. It tells us when to get up, eat, exercise, work, relax and go to sleep. We spend about two hours each day exercising. Without regular exercise, we would lose a certain amount of muscle and bone due to the microgravity (微重力) environment in space.
The food we eat is specifically designed for space missions. Some foods, such as cakes, can be eaten in space just the way they are eaten on the Earth. But some other foods are real challenges. For example, when you’re in space, you can’t shake salt onto food, because the salt would float away. As a result, we have to use special liquid (液体) salt.
When we are not busy doing experiments on the ISS, we can relax and have fun in a variety of ways. Like most of you, we listen to music, read books, play cards, watch movies and talk with our family members.
As you can see, the microgravity environment in space brings many challenges that don’t exist on the Earth. Would you like to live for some time on the ISS?
Yours sincerely,
Jessica Meir
