Unit 3 On the move Integrated skills Page 36-38 Dealing with traffic accidents By the end of this section, we will be able to: 1.learn about the common causes of traffic accidents; 2. suggest solutions for drivers, pedestrians and e-bike riders; 3. write a speech transcript for Traffic Safety Day; 4. raise awareness of traffic safety. A. Alice is going to give a speech for Traffic Safety Day. She has found an article on the website of the Transport Department. Read the article below and answer the following questions. Page 36 Drivers, be aware! The facts speak for themselves: an estimated 1.3 million people die in road traffic crashes globally every year, while driver error is responsible for more than 90 per cent of them. speak for itself/themselves不言而喻;有目共睹 Therefore, drivers should be reminded about the common causes of road accidents and the measures to prevent them. One common cause is drivers not paying attention. Drivers tend to lose concentration when they are checking their phones, or even adjusting controls in the vehicle. Feeling tired or getting annoyed in traffic can prove equally distracting for drivers. control(机器或车辆的)操纵装置,开关,按钮 distracting/dɪsˈtræktɪŋ/使人分心的 Changes on the road can happen in the blink of an eye, and drivers must be ready to react immediately and correctly. Therefore, drivers’ failure to pay full attention to road conditions can have disastrous consequences. Similarly, driving over the speed limit or after consuming alcohol increases the likelihood of traffic accidents. failure to do sth未做,未履行(应做之事) dis·as·trous  /dɪˈzɑːstrəs/ adj.极糟糕的;灾难性的;完全失败的; speed limit (道路的)最高车速限制,限速 △Speeding reduces the time allowed for the driver to respond to something unexpected on the road, while increasing the distance and time needed to stop the vehicle. The result could be a minor traffic accident, or in the worst case, an overturned vehicle and even loss of life. allow sth (for sb/sth)(为某目的)留出,给出 over·turn  /ˌəʊvəˈtɜːn/ 倾倒;倾覆;翻掉;推翻,撤销(判决等) Drink-driving is another major risk factor for road accidents. With alcohol, the driver’s abilities to operate a vehicle safely are significantly affected. The driver would struggle to stay alert, recognize dangers and respond appropriately. To minimize the risk of road accidents, it is essential to practise safe driving. This requires that drivers avoid all high-risk behaviours. By doing so, we can greatly decrease the frequency and severity of traffic accidents, and ultimately make the difference between life and death to everyone on our roads. 1. I’m here today to talk about road safety. I’ll focus mainly on pedestrians and e-bike riders, the latter being a group that is rapidly growing in China. Hopefully, what I share with you can help keep our roads safer. Not paying attention to the street or surrounding areas can contribute to traffic accidents. Pedestrians and e-bike riders sometimes speak on the phone or stare at their phone screens while navigating around busy city streets. When focusing on their phones, they are distracted and unable to respond quickly in unexpected situations. Similarly, both groups place their own lives and the lives of others in danger when they ignore basic traffic rules. Pedestrians and e-bike riders sometimes use lanes that are meant for other road users. For instance, pedestrians may not always walk on pavements, while e-bikers may use driveways or pavements instead of bike lanes. bike lane/ cycle lane自行车专用道 Both groups may also ignore the red light or dash across the road at inappropriate places. These dangerous behaviours greatly increase the risk of accidents. Apart from the problems mentioned above, e-bike riders present a separate set of safety issues. Turning without signalling properly creates confusion and danger for other road users. present使发生;使经历;造成 sep·ar·ate /ˈseprət/ 不同的;不相关的 Moreover, if e-bikes are loaded with other people or too many packages, the extra weight will make it difficult to control them. All these problems can lead to accidents, which would become even more severe if e-bikers ride at high speed or do not wear helmets. It’s important to note that pedestrians and e-bike riders can lower the risk of accidents by doing their part. In fact, these two groups should be extra careful because they are more exposed to injury when on the road. Thank you. do your part尽你的本分; 做你应该做的 C.In pairs, discuss traffic accidents and road safety. Use the following questions and expressions to help you. • What is the current state of road safety? • What are the common causes of traffic accidents? • What solutions would you suggest for drivers, pedestrians and e-bike riders? Expressions: Suggesting solutions: A good solution could be … An alternative way to … is … The problem could be solved if … It is advisable/wise to improve the situation by ... What about … to fix the problem? al·ter·na·tive  /ɔːlˈtɜːnətɪv/ 可供替代的; 另外的 ad·vis·able (to do sth) /ədˈvaɪzəbl/ 明智;可取 A: The current state of road safety is not very good, especially as the growing population and economy mean road accidents have increased. In fact, the global estimate is that 1.3 million people die in road traffic crashes annually. Do you know who is responsible for most of these accidents? B: Yes. Drivers are to blame for more than 90 per cent of them, while pedestrians and e-bike riders also contribute to road accidents. As the number of e-bike riders in our country is rapidly growing, there are more and more accidents related to e-bikes. A: That’s right. One cause common to the three groups is not paying attention. If they use their phones when driving, walking or riding e-bikes, they tend to ignore their surroundings. What’s more, drivers easily lose their concentration when tired or adjusting the car’s controls. B: True. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. So if distracted, road users will fail to react quickly. Besides, drivers often speed or drink and drive, which also affects their abilities to respond appropriately. A: Similarly, pedestrians and e-bikers tend to ignore the red light or dash across the busy road. E-bike riders often turn without signalling or overload their e-bikes. Also, e-bikes that are not well maintained can have faulty brakes or old tyres, making them difficult to control. All these increase the risk of accidents. over·load /ˌəʊvəˈləʊd/ 使超载;使负荷过重 faulty /ˈfɔːlti/ adj. B: Definitely. So these high-risk behaviours must be stopped to reduce traffic accidents and improve road safety. It is advisable to improve the situation by calling for drivers to always pay attention to their surroundings and be prepared to react. A: I agree. And similarly, pedestrians and e-bikers must pay attention to road conditions. In fact, these two groups need to take extra precautions because they are more likely to get injured in a traffic accident. pre·cau·tion  /prɪˈkɔːʃn/ 预防措施;预防;防备;防范行动 A good solution for e-bikers could be to wear reflective clothing so they’re highly visible to all other road users. B: Good idea. And pedestrians had better remember to look both ways and watch out for the oncoming traffic when crossing the road. These problems could be solved if all road users are well informed about traffic laws and make every effort to avoid disobeying them. re·flect·ive  /rɪˈflektɪv/ adj.(指物体表面)反射热的,反光的 vis·ible  /ˈvɪzəbl/ 看得见的;可见的;明显的;能注意到的 on·com·ing  /ˈɒnkʌmɪŋ/迎面而来的;即将来临的 D.Write a speech transcript for Traffic Safety Day calling on people to promote road safety. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it. Road safety begins with us Welcome to Traffic Safety Day. With the rapidly growing population and economy, traffic accidents are increasing too. It is estimated that worldwide 1.3 million people die in road traffic crashes annually. Drivers cause more than 90 per cent of the accidents, but pedestrians and e-bike riders are also to blame. Dangerous roads affect us all, so I call on everyone to promote road safety. To avoid road accidents, we must understand their causes. Now more than ever, the widespread use of mobile phones makes it easier for road users to become distracted. Drivers, pedestrians and e-bike riders who focus on their phones tend to ignore their surroundings.Drivers also easily lose their concentration when they get tired or annoyed, or adjust the car’s controls. Under such circumstances, road users are unable to respond appropriately. Besides, road users sometimes disobey traffic rules and regulations. Driving over the speed limit or after consuming alcohol is more likely to cause traffic accidents. Pedestrians and e-bikers may cross the road at inappropriate places or ignore the red light. E-bike riders also typically weave in and out of the traffic, fail to signal when turning, overload their e-bikes, or do not maintain their e-bikes regularly, increasing the risk of accidents. weave迂回行进,穿行(以避开障碍) To improve road safety, all the above-mentioned high-risk behaviours should be avoided. Road users must always pay attention to their surroundings and be alert and ready to react to unexpected situations. Pedestrians and e-bikers need to be extra cautious because they are more likely to get injured during an accident. E-bikers could wear reflective clothing and helmets to better protect themselves, while pedestrians should look both ways and watch out for the oncoming traffic when crossing the road. As you leave today, do not forget that road safety begins with us. Our actions could make all the difference. Thank you. $$
