3.C主旨大意题。根据第六段可知,本段主要
分析说明导致肥胖的几个主要原因(roo

难句分析
Prof Baur said the trend was "particularly
worrying'”,adding that“governments and
policymakers around the world need to do
all they can to avoid passing health.social,
and economic costs on to the younger
generation'”by assessing“the systems and

并补充说“全球各国的政府和政策制定者
需要竭尽全力,通过评估导致肥胖的‘系统

More than half the world's population will be overweight or obese(过度e胖的)by2o35if
action is not taken, the World Obesity Federation warns.More than four billion people will be
affected, with rates rising fastest among children, its report says.
The report predicts the cost of obesity will amount to more than $4tn (f3.3tn)annually
by 2035.The president of the federation,Prof Louise Baur, described the report's findings as
a clear warning to countries to act now or risk repercussions in the future.
The report in particular highlights the rising rates of obesity among children and
teenagers, with rates expected to double from 2020 levels among both boys and girls.Low or
middle-income countries in Africa and Asia are expected to see the greatest rises.
In June 2013,the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease. Many
health organizations have described it as a pandemic.A body mass index (BMI)over 25 is
considered overweight, and over 30 is obese.Evidence shows that obesity increases someone's
risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases.
The findings estimate that rises in obesity rates around the world will have a significant
impact on the global economy, equating to 3%of global Gross Domestic Product. The report
emphasises that its acknowledgement of the economic impact of obesity "is in no way a
reflection of blame on people living with obesity".
The federation called for the root causes to be addressed. These include an increased
consumption of highly processed foods, greater levels of sedentary behaviour, and a lack of
healthcare services to assist in weight management. The WOF recommended restricting the
marketing of food that has high fat, salt or sugar content, and providing healthy food in
schools.
Prof Baur said the trend was "particularly worrying",adding that "governments and
policymakers around the world need to do all they can to avoid passing health, social, and
economic costs on to the younger generation"by assessing "the systems and root factors"that
contribute to obesity.
1.What does the underlined word "repercussions"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Benefits.
B.Chances.
C.Possibilities.
D.Consequences.
2.What do we know from the World Obesity Federation's report?
A.Obesity will increase fastest among adults.
B.Obesity isn't linked to serious diseases indeed.
C.Obesity has a great influence on world economy.
D.Obesity will increase fastest in developed countries.
3.What is the sixth paragraph mainly about?
A.The high cost of obesity.
B.The health risks of obesity.
C.The main reasons for obesity.
D.The negative effects of obesity.
4.What's Prof Baur's purpose in the last paragraph?
A.To call to action.

I saw that woman every day, even though my mind didn't really register (her

One afternoon,I saw two boys kicked over trash cans, spilling garbage.
“What are you doing?”she exclaimed(惊呼).“Get back and clean this mess up!”she
shouted.
The boys ran away, making faces to her.
Sadly, she began collecting the trash.A few tears fell from her eyes.I picked up a paper

The next time I saw her,I called out,"Good morning!"She stopped and looked at me.Then,
she smiled back.It was a really beautiful smile.
We continued this relationship. We both smiled and waved as we met but we didn't know

that I am a student and she is a custodian,or that she is black and I am white, really doesn't

There's an industry selling a product that is bad for one's health.A generation ago that
industry was tobacco and its product was cigarettes.Today it is the food and beverage()
industry and its product is sugarsugar that is being added to food and drink.
After 20 years working on tobacco control,Jane Martin, executive manager of the
Obesity Policy Coalition, has taken up the battle against sugar. She charges that the food
industry has followed the example of the tobacco industry to avoid regulation.
"The sugar industry has been very similar to the tobacco industry in how they work,"she
says."They fund their own research studies and criticise research they see as harmful. They
focus on personal responsibility, saying it's up to parents and the individual."
But the similarities don't stop there.
"The tobacco industry pushed self-regulation over legislation().And now we have
self-regulation around marketing to children of junk food and drinks, which is exactly what the
tobacco industry got away with.
Added sugar-not natural sugars that exist in fruits and vegetables-is everywhere. One
of the largest sources is beverage such as soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit drinks. But in
the supermarket you can see that there is added sugar in bread, yoghurt, peanut butter, soup,

A single tablespoon of tomato sauce can contain a teaspoonful of sugar. This "sugar"

names for sugar listed on food labels in Australia,New Zealand and Singapore, ranging from
“agave nectar'”to“high-fructose corn syrup”and“molasses”,along with a whole host of
names you will have never heard of.
According to Lisa Renn,an accredited practising dietitian, sugar has a range of purposes in
food manufacturing.
“It's not only used as a sweetener(甜昧剂),but it's also used as a colouring for food
consistency(浓度)and as something to hold the ingredients together,”she explains..“Having
small amounts of sugar is OK.But large amounts every day are not good.Soft drinks have
become the new water.”
1.How does Jane Martin express her opinion about sugar?
A.By listing some numbers.
B.By giving some examples.
C.By making some comparisons.
D.By analyzing some phenomena.
2.What does the sugar industry stress about our having sugar?
A.Controlling yourself.
B.Making laws to limit it.
C.Adding less in the products.
D.Informing the public of its harm.
3.Why are many different names for sugar used in some countries?
A.To cover the truth.
B.To promote the sale
C.To attract more attention.
D.To show greater diversity.
4.What attitude does Lisa Renn take toward people's having sugar?

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
George Robinson was ambitious but not very clever when he was at school, and he left
school when he was sixteen.
At first he did not know what to do,but then he tried selling cheap toys in the street, and
it quickly became clear that he was a clever businessman.Soon, without much struggle,he
had a small shop of his own,and it was not long before he owned three big shops in his town,
in which he employed over sixty people. Before he was thirty he also had quite a big factory for
making toys, and had succeeded in making a considerable fortune.
George had always been interested in local politics. He was elected to the town council
when he was thirty-two.He was such a busy and useful member of it that he rapidly became
mayor.
Although he was very successful in international industry as well as in local government,
George was still not a very well-educated man,and as he was also a very busy one,he began
to have the speeches he had to make written for him by a special speechwriter.
Usually he did not have much time to go through a speech before giving it,but the
speechwriter was good at thinking up clever things, especially stories and jokes for George,so
George never had any difficulties with him and got quite used to trusting him.In the end he
did not trouble even to look at what he was given until it was time to make the speech.
Then one day George had to make an important speech at a formal official ceremony
marking the opening of a new library which he had persuaded other distinguished businessmen
in the town to help him to pay for.He had been away on urgent business for a week before
this occasion,so he had no time to read through his speech at all.
