In Britain, people celebrate Boxing Day on December 26th, which is the following day after Christmas Day. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it’s a non-working day in the whole Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The exact origin (起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing (航行) ships were setting off to discover new land, a priest (神父) placed a Christmas Box on each ship. Those sailors who wanted a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn’t open it to share the money with the poor until Christmas.

We all know that Britain and the US are two countries connected by a common language. But in fact the differences are more fun to study, as BBC did in a recent story called 8 Situations When Britons Behave Differently From Americans. We have picked out four for you. Take a look.
When someone knocks into you
If someone knocks into an American, the victim (受害者) will probably look at the aggressor (冒失者) in the face and expect an expression of regret. If, however, the victim happens to be British, the victim will say “sorry” before the other person says it.
When you get dressed for dinner
Britons don’t all change into evening dresses for supper like what you may have seen in popular TV shows. But they do try to make an effort when going out for dinner somewhere nice. Americans, however, will probably wear a common shirt to a nice restaurant.
When you don’t finish your food
Britons wouldn’t think to take the leftovers home when dining out at a restaurant. They think the food is somehow “tainted (污染的)” because they’ve stuck at it with a knife and fork. But in the US, packing it up to take home is a custom.
When you get into a taxi
Britons will give the taxi driver an address, then they don’t say anything with the driver before it’s time to pay. Sometimes they’re being taken in a wrong way, they don’t like to say anything, either. In the US, however, most passengers will tell the driver which way to go after telling him or her the address.

India When in India, avoid eating with your left hand. Because the left hand is seen as disgusting (不洁的). It’s normally used for wiping in the bathroom. The same is true for countries in the Middle East and parts of Africa.
One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人) put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas. That is why that day became know as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating (捐赠) their time, services and money to Aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor, or helping families in need.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
78.How many situations does the passage show us about different behaviors?
79.Who will say sorry first if someone knocks into a Briton, the victim or the aggressor?
80.What will Americans probably wear to a nice restaurant?
81.Why do Britons think the leftover food is tainted?
82.When will most Americans tell the driver which way to go after they get on the taxi?
Different regions (地区) have different cultures. Different cultures will form different customs and manners. Some of the behavior we think is polite to others may be rude. Here are some rules about eating.
Russia Shaking hands would seem to be a polite way to greet someone. However, when in Russia, don’t offer to shake hands in a doorway. It’s said that the “house spirit” live in a home’s doorway and crossing over it for a greeting would bring bad luck.
Italy In Italy while it’s still generally considered polite to allow a woman to go through a door first. But that rule goes away when people enter a restaurant. By leading in first, the man can be the one to talk to the host and get a table.
India When in India, avoid eating with your left hand. Because the left hand is seen as disgusting (不洁的). It’s normally used for wiping in the bathroom. The same is true for countries in the Middle East and parts of Africa. On the other hand there are some rude manners that are actually polite in other countries.
The United Kingdom If you’re in Great Britain, the left is important. You should only pass the port in the direction. Passing the dessert wine to the right is considered as bad manners. If you do forget to pass the port, the person who’s waiting for it may remind you.
The title: 83 in different countries
Russia
•It seems polite to greet someone by 84 in most countries.

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar (农历的) calendar. There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called “zhuyu” to celebrate it . Both chrysanthemum and “zhuyu” are considered as clean plants that can clean houses and treat (治疗) diseases.
