There was homework to do, sports to play and fun to have. Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children do take up part-time jobs. It’s one of those things that is seen almost as a rite of passage It’s a taste of independence. Teenagers agree that it teaches useful lessons about working with adults and also about using your money wisely. Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom. One 13 year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, said she enjoyed her job because she was making money and it helped her dare to speak to other people. Research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be bad for a person later on. But the number of school children in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years. Many young people feel going out to work will influence their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results—and a good job in the long term. However, doing part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives. They just need to get the right balance (平衡) between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest. Research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be bad for a person later on. 宾语从句:that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be bad for a person later on. 宾语从句主语:not taking on a Saturday or holiday job (动名词短语的否定形式作主语 - “不从事周六或假期工作”) 2. But the number of school children in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years. 程度状语:by a fifth (下降了五分之一) 时间状语:in the past five years (在过去的五年里) 3. However, doing part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives. 表语:a good way (一个好方法) 定语修饰way: of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives (介词短语 - “帮助年轻人学习...技能的方法”) 【重难词汇梳理】 1.part-time job (n.): 兼职工作 2.rite of passage (n. phrase): 成人仪式 3.a taste of independence (n. phrase): 尝到独立的滋味 4.independence (n.): 独立 5.wisely (adv.): 明智地;聪明地 6.freedom (n.): 自由 7.sense of freedom (n. phrase): 自由感 8.research (n.): 研究;调查 9.take on (a job) (v. phrase): 承担(工作);接受(工作) 10.fall by (v. phrase): 下降了... Chen Zanzao, a 17-year-old boy from Shenzhen, has created a charity community (慈善团体) called Dear Theodosia to offer professional help to families facing similar problems. It now has 2,000 regular participants (参与者). Chen’s idea was inspired by the three-child policy (政策). “My friend Sina and I thought it would bring problems like parental favoritism (父母偏心),” Chen said. “Most families still don’t know any methods to deal with this.” They started to research both scientific parenting styles and people’s needs. They read a lot of studies on the topic and surveyed more than 1,000 people. They found that the healthiest family relationships are when parents take an active part in their children’s lives. They then founded the community to spread the idea. “We hold lectures and discussions as well as go on radio and TV programs to spread useful information,” Chen said. Chen and his friend Sina would do one-on-one conversations with people who felt self-conscious (难为情的) about sharing their stories. “It’s understandable that at first, they need time to trust us since we are young,” Chen said. “But listening is the key, and slowly they will realize that we are professional.” “We met many parents saying, ‘I never thought raising a child would be this difficult’, so I think it’s really important that parents think through whether they could take the responsibility (责任) before they rush into anything,” Chen added. A What do you think of your schooldays? Were they interesting or boring? We did a survey about it. For this survey we asked 1,674 children between the ages of 5 and 17 this question “How much do you enjoy going to school?” Here is the result. About 67% of children said that they either usually enjoy going to school or enjoy going to school very much. 13% seldom enjoy it and 20% really dislike it. Although 20% is quite a small figure that is still a worry. Another thing we wanted to discover was whether children’s attitude towards school changes as they age. Do different age groups enjoy school more or less than one another? The clear finding of our survey is that children’s liking for school diminishes (减少) as they age. At an early age they seem to enjoy it the most and, towards the end of their school-lives, they enjoy it the least. As children progress through school the work becomes harder, the expectations become greater, and the stresses increase. 1.________ of students between the ages of 5-17 enjoy going to school very much. Changing relationships: High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication. “It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said.
